The history behind the tapes: Someone had asked Cigar Joe for an interview for an oral history project but Cigar Joe decided to do the recording himself. At the time he was having trouble with circulation in his legs and spent most of the time at home so he bought a tape recorder. He had trouble with the tape recorder and threw all of the tapes away. His mailman took the trashed tapes, spliced them, and made copies. He gave Cigar Joe copies and kept backups (with Cigar Joe’s consent) in case the originals were lost. This occurred in 1981.

Joe Testaverde Sends In Dolphin Photos From When The Boys Brought the Midnight Sun Up From Texas

Hey Joe, bet you didn’t know I took some pictures of you steaming across the harbor Monday from the roof of the Coast Guard station did ya?  Look for the multi-part series starting Friday on the Coast Guard Boats, Inside the Station, On the Roof, The Can Do CafĆ© (where they eat) and more.  They were great hosts and gave Manny and I incredible access.  It should be a great series.

Joe Testaverde writes-

Joey I took these pics. between Cuba and Key West while we were bring the Midnight Sun home from Texas, I saw many sightings of marine animals on our 9 day trip ; mostly in the middle of the Gulf stream which gave as us a 3-6 knot push home. Also we were  "Red Sox Nation" from the time we left dock in Texas till we got home.  Joe T.

Thanks for the pictures Joe!!!!

Pimping Tuffy

So yesterday morning I get an email from a woman named Kaitlin Herbert.Ā  Kaitlin works for the television production company that produces the number one show on BRAVO- ā€œthe Millionaire Matchmaker and one of the top rated shows on Animal Planet ā€œPit Bossā€.

So her production company is looking for some fishermen for a particular type of show they are developing for the Food Network.Ā  She told me that she found GMG after an extensive search for Gloucester Fishing vessels. I sent here a pile of links to some of the videos we’ve done featuring Tuffy, Stoga and Trapper John.

Within an hour or so I got an email back from Kaitlin asking for the contact information for Tuffy saying that he and his crew seem like a great group of guys and that they would love to hear their story.

Tuffy happened to be out fishing but when he hit the dock we taped a special message for Kaitlin which you can view below.

She wrote back last night.

What do you suppose she said? šŸ™‚

Here are the videos I sent her which led to her interest.

153 Miles and and 18 Hour Steam Dave Jewell and Crew Land Two Fat Bluefin Tuna

Heading out a couple of days ago Dave and his crew head out for an 18 hour steam ofĀ  153 miles to catch themselves a nice pay day. One 800 lber and one 650 these tuna will command a nice price in Japan.

When Dave headed out he was a bit nervous because where they have to go to catch these fish it’s a long way out and there’s no place to run and hide if a storm whips up.Ā  It is where there are warm ocean currents and cold water intersecting and it can produce nasty storms seemingly out of the blue and without much warning.

Tommy Burns’ Arethusa Back Lobstering

Tommy has been doing engine work to the Arethusa all summer long along with other repairs.Ā  He had been lobstering out of a lobster boat half it’s size which meant he couldn’t shift lobster traps the way a true lobsterman would to follow the lobsters around.Ā  With a boat like the Arethusa you can put a good amount of gear aboard and shift teh gear according to what the lobsters are doing.

There’s a saying in the lobster industry I heard my father say when I was much younger but it has stuck with me.Ā  There are “lobstermen” who fish the gear and move the traps around to maximize their catch.Ā  Then there are “pot haulers” who simply dump the lobster lobster traps back in the same spots and don’t move the gear around to maximize their catch according to lobster movement patterns.

Tommy Burns is a “lobsterman” and he is now back to lobstering.
