New Shops Part 1: Scout Vintage Finds in East Gloucester

Discovered on one of my recent scouting trips around Cape Ann: a new shop, appropriately named Scout Vintage Finds. The shop is small in size but generous in spirit, with enough interesting vintage pottery, sewing notions, small furniture, lighting and more to make you wreck your car as you drive past, craning your neck trying to see all the stuff inside before you find a parking space. The shop is located at 186 East Gloucester, just across and up the street from the North Shore Arts Association as you head toward the turn to Rocky Neck. The owner of this new venture is Karen King, seamstress, milliner and expert in all things vintage. She sews beautiful lavender sachets out of vintage linens for the shop, and when you stop by the shop to see the goods she has in stock, be sure to ask about her collection of hats — no, not hats she finds at estate sales — these are hats she makes. Scout Vintage Finds is an unusual and unusually perfect addition to East Gloucester.

Stay in touch with Scout Vintage Finds through the store’s facebook page and on twitter (@scoutfinds).

An Eastern Rigged Dragger Going Past The Road That Leads To The Paint Factory

marks old pictures 044Joe Testeverde Writes-

Just bit more info. on the ZEBU , she was a steel daul sided eastern rigged vessel (could shoot net from port as well starboard side if need be) from Boston that was converted to scalloping later in life. You will note absent any otter trawler doors on either sides and the booms coming off off the main mast that would haul aboard the scallop dredges up the side of the vessel (note large rusted area mid ship) then a hook would bring up the steel rig bag and dump on deck for sortting of scallops, shells, rocks. Also on the side of the piothouse are build outs of schucking houses as well as a buildout at the raised forcastle area. She could have ran as many as 12 men doing shifts of shecking and deck duties.

Thanks to Frank Garrison for sending this in. I can’t place it exactly but if I had to guess it looks like it’s near beacon Marine where the Tuna wharf is.

I love this little guy! You have to be walking to see it. Look over the railing just before the Beacon Marine building. And there it is. Of course when the tide’s in, it’s underwater. Does anyone know where it came from?  —Sharon

Making Semolina Bread Stuffing At Last Stop Variety

Have you ever tried the turkey sandwich with cranberry chutney and semolina bread stuffing sandwich at Last Stop Variety?

If you haven’t you gotta go try it.  It’s a great great sandwich and hearty kind of meal for this time of year.  I love that we have a place like Last Stop in East Gloucester close to the dock so I know I can always swing by and get some home cooked goodness.

Tree Girl

Tree Girl was really busting her hump out there.

I wonder if she took note of how gorgeous her surroundings were right then or if she was solely focused on getting done the task at hand.
