Where do you want your bench?

I was thinking about where I’d want my bench this morning.  Say you died and some folks wanted to put a memorial bench someplace with your name on it for people to enjoy.

I guess it’s similar to spreading ashes.  Some people keep their loved ones in an urn on a shelf in the house, some spread them out to sea, some spread them along a beach.

But in the tradition of our family we usually get buried in boxes and put into cemeteries. In some cases loved ones or family members may donate or erect a bench somewhere with the deceased’s name on it.

But I’m getting off track I’m not talking about the physical body placement once the spirit has left, I’m talking about if people were going to place a bench in memory of you somewhere.

So here was my thought process when thinking about it-

At first I thought about a bench at Cripple Cove overlooking our dock but immediately erased the thought of that because of the gazillions of hours spent down here, the last place I want to be stuck at is overlooking work.  Then I thought about the beach somewhere overlooking Good Harbor.  I love Good Harbor Beach but really I rarely get there because I work so much.  Taking sunrise pictures of the Twin Lights from the footbridge is something I enjoy and thinking about someone else enjoying those sunrises while sitting on that bench would be nice. (Also briefly considered a bench at the Naples Beach Club).

But I consider myself a people person and I’m most happy when interacting with people I like.  So it came down to Main Street.  I love downtown.  I love the action, the people, the restaurants. So ideally it would be on Main street in the block between Menage Gallery and Passports on that side of the street where they get that beautiful morning sun.

Where would you want your bench?

Alchemy Cafe and Bistro

Alchemy Cafe and Bistro boasts a new Spring menu full of goodies and a redesigned interior with more big chairs and comfy corners. A beautiful and funky new metal sign on the corner should attract some attention. The menu offers yummy sharing tapas as well as pizza and delicious entrees. I love that they really try to source everything locally and care where their meat comes from and what it has eaten. I had to go here after Joey’s food map. There was a serious shortage of Alchemy photos – I had to be sure it got on that food map – and I did my duty. It was tough, boy, I tell you! I managed though…

Rob ordered the grass-fed burger and fries, which were heavily wife-taxed, and my sea bass managed to be eaten almost entirely by me as well. (Poor Rob.) Asparagus with poached egg tapas and a lavender creme caramel dessert made for a fine, rare date night indeed!

Angel from the Sea – missing from Main Street

The Angel from the Sea a familiar sight on Main Street when you pass Art Haven has been retired.   A contest is being held July 9th at Art Haven for a new logo.

David Brooks scrapped her off the window and I believe there was a tear in his eye during the last scrape; she has served Art Haven for the past 2 years.

Several people came by and did their part in helping David.

Father’s Day- June 20th- the Day After The First Block Party

Why do I have a picture of these panties on the pages of GMG other than the fact it is an easy way to legitimize posting pictures of skimpy panties you ask?

Well because Father’s day happens to fall on the very next day AFTER this Saturday’s Downtown Gloucester Block Party.  So if you are like me and are horrible at buying gifts because you always wait til the last minute you will have the absolute best opportunity to do that last minute Father’s Day shopping while getting your eat and drink on at the Block Party.  The stores will be open Saturday night and many will be having special sales for the Block Party.  Talk about great timing!  You can support the great retailers downtown, party down, meet up with old friends and get your Father’s Day shopping done all at once.  If I count that right that’s a four winner WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN

These filthy little numbers are available at Nancy Hendrickson’s Seasons On Main.  They are tied up in with a little bow and are small enough so they won’t bog down your partying and what father wouldn’t want his Significant Other to rock a pair of these? Best of all Nancy is having a sale-

Toodeloos Open! 137 Main Street – Quality Childrens Toys In All Price Ranges

The tiles painted by community children are installed (look for a video including every child’s tile installed tomorrow)

DSC06885

The place is absolutely packed with QUALITY toys.  I can’t believe how much inventory they have there and the thing is it is not all the normal crappy plastic toys you see at the big box toy stores.  They have real quality toys.  You have to check it out.  There is absolutely no reason to head out of town to buy a toy.  See for yourself. Click the pictures to enlarge them.

I had to step down from the Block Party Committee due to time constraints but am whole heartily looking forward to enjoying them.  Wishing my buddies on the committee the absolute best and looking forward to the fun times they put on for us all to enjoy!

Update From Erika Hansen-

A Highland Tradition comes to Main Street!

From the beautiful and vivavious Jennifer Goulart Amero comes this fabulous addition to the block party entertainment lineup:

Emerald Rae & her mate Sean Connors will perform a highland tradition called “busking” from 6p-7p.  They will start at one end of Main Street and play along the way.

They will cap this off with a performance (and feel free to join the dancing!) in front of Sovereign Bank at 7p.
And remember Emerald Rae’s performance comes on the heels (pun intended!) of Kristen McCarthy, the tribal fusion bellydancer.
How cool is that?
Another Update from Erika hansen 6/18/10
One of the organizations that approached us to have a presence at Block party is the Nora Ruchman Scholarship Fund.  Friends of Nora, a beautiful young woman whom we lost tragically this Spring, will have a table at block party near the former Empire building with information from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  They will be selling bracelets with Nora’s name for the Nora Ruchman Scholarship Fund and raising money for an upcoming walk in Boston: The Out of the Darkness Overnight, an 18-mile journey through the night, from dusk until dawn. Organizers say it’s a unique opportunity to bring the issues of depression and suicide into the light as people walk together to turn heartbreak into hope for tomorrow. While block party is all about fun, it’s also all about community and this community has lost too many of our own to suicide.   Nora’s friends want to make sure we don’t lose anyone else this way.  So we hope you’ll stop by the table and learn more.

Dogtown Book Shop

DSC06780

As I wander through and say hey to Bob Ritchie at his Dogtown Book Shop in the heart of beautiful Downtown Gloucester I can’t help but wonder how one ever could walk away from such a labor of love.  It’s obvious Bob has a passion for books. The  shelves are stocked with hard to find, significant or interesting books.  I wonder how does someone value a business like this and turn it over to someone else when it’s an incredible amount of work and passion that went into building it?

Wouldn’t it have to be someone that took it over that would have that same kind of passion for the same type of material and is there someone out there that exists that could possibly put in one tenth of the passion to make the transition and keep the joint running?

I hope so, because places like the Dogtown Book Shop are real treasures to a community.
