Don’t take these guys for granted

… just because you can see them every Tuesday at Jalapenos.  They are some of the best musicians on Cape Ann.  And once in a while guests show up and sit in.  Last week it was Allen Estes.  You never know what will happen.

Yesterday we published a clip from Celebrate Gloucester 2010 and people asked for more.  Here it is.  It’s KBMG Electric and they ROCK!

Now if you can’t get into Jalapenos to see these guys tonight because it’s too crowded, there are other choices.  And if you’ve never seen Henley Douglas, Jr, you should really go down to the Rhumbline at 10 and check him out.  See full music lineup here.

Surprise guest at Shalin Liu last night ~ another surprise at the Brew Pub tonight

Surprise guest at Shalin Liu last night

Miranda Russell at Shalin Liu last night with surprise guest Inge Berge on guitar (L-R: John Hyde, Joe Kessler, Miranda Russell, Vincent Briguglio, Inge Berge, Leo Ciaramitaro)

Justin Piper’s wife was in labor so Miranda called Inge at about 4pm to ask if he could sit in.  Inge was excellent with some great solos, which proves just how versatile he is (in case anyone ever doubted).  See Inge’s new hit video here.  Very different style indeed!

As of this morning there were 5 tickets left for Miranda’s show tonight.  You can see if they’re still available here.

For the rest of you, there are plenty of other choices tonight (full music lineup here).  Our good friend Allen Estes will be with Dan King & Friends at Cape Ann Brewery starting at 9pm.  He’s just finished a new song.  Ask him to play it.

G.H.S. DOCKSIDERS SPRING BREAK BENEFIT TODAY @ 4pm

Don’t miss the Docksiders today at 4pm as they share the stage with some of Cape Ann’s finest talent, hosted by Allen Estes, star of “Local Music Seen with Allen Estes“. Special Guests: Dan King, AnnMarie, Renee & Joe, Dennis Monagle (looks a lot like the Bandit Kings!) with Mike Lindberg on saxaphone.

More great music tonight and at 10pm there’s a new addition to Saturday Night in Gloucester: Jalapenos features a Caribbean/Island/Latin & Reggae DJ ’till 12:30.  See full music lineup here.

Official Press Release for HERE FOR HAITI

GLOUCESTER IS HERE FOR HAITI

On Saturday, February 6th, 2010, the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church presents HERE FOR HAITI: Raising Song, Spirit & Help for Haiti.

GLOUCESTER, MA.    Saturday, February 6, 2010.  Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church. 10 Church St. Gloucester MA. 7pm.  $10.  All ages.  All proceeds to Partners in Health (working in Haiti for over 20 years)  HERE FOR HAITI will include performances by What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?, Sarah Rabdau, Kristen Miller, HUM, Dan King, an African drum ensemble, dancers, and other special guests.  Hosted by Chloe Erdmann and U.U. Minister, Steve Wilson.

In July of 2006, Chloe Erdmann visited Port-Au-Prince and Jacmel, Haiti, with a group of dancers led by choreographer, Jean Appolon and musician, Juju, (both from Haiti.) The U.S. visitors were welcomed into the community and participated in rituals, including Jean’s initiation ceremony as a Vodou Priest, and a pilgrimage to Saut d’Eau waterfall in Ville Bonheur.   Chloe fondly remembers the experience, “The emphasis on community sharing, helping and healing was palpable and contagious.  And the dancing! I really don’t know how, but all ages danced during these rituals for days–and I mean that quite literally.  It was nothing short of amazing.  My friends and I would collapse at the end of the day and be dazzled by the idea that people were still dancing and would be up earlier than we would the following morning and at it again.  If dancing is any measure of joy in the soul, they have it to overflowing.”

Despite abominable conditions in health care, education, and access to clean water, Chloe was astounded by the unshakable spirit, pride and generosity in which she was surrounded.

“There was an instance when I truly witnessed how desperate the situation was concerning health care.  A rainstorm had flooded the concrete channels on either side of the road and a motorcyclist had skidded off the side and broken his leg.  A woman passing by had managed to get him in the back of her station wagon and was looking for any kind of medical attention in the area.  Two Haitian pilgrim/hitchhikers we had picked up in our truck gave their towels to help stop the bleeding on the way to the closest medical facility (an hour away.) Giving up towels may seem like nothing to us, but I later found out that those were their towels for the year. This is only one story, but it is one that haunts me when I imagine the scale of damage done to such a beautiful country by this earthquake. If a towel can help, every bit helps, and we need to help our neighbors much as we can!”

Chloe met Brian King first as fan of his band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? Through her friendship with Brian, she fell in love with Gloucester, spending the Summer of 2008 on Cape Ann, before moving to Scotland to earn her PhD in Comparative Religion and Theology.  She happened to be back in Massachusetts when the earthquake hit, and immediately she and Brian approached the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church about creating a benefit.  The church board was eager to sponsor the event.

Regarding the benefit, Brian says, “I strongly believe that when tragedies happen in places that are out of our reach, many feel powerless to help. Coming together where we are, HERE, helps strengthen our energy, vision and ability to make a difference.  It pulls us out of isolation, to join in effort and voice.  We have the power to help right HERE by raising funds that will go where they are needed most.”

Chloe also spoke about seeing Partners in Health in action.  “When I saw the hospital that Partner In Health supports, it was one of the most hopeful sights there concerning the medical situation.  Paul Farmer knows Haiti, Haitians, and the situation intimately. PIH comes highly recommended by the group I visited Haiti with- both the Haitians and the Americans – and I feel confident to donate the proceeds to their good work.”

Brian has pulled together great talent from Gloucester and Boston for HERE FOR HAITI.   Boston singer-songwriter, pianist, Sarah Rabdau was a finalist in WBCN Rock-n-Roll Rumble last year.  Her latest video, “Autumn Spills” is getting rotation on BRAVO.

Brian’s own band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? sold out their CD release party at the Gloucester Stage Company, and the band keeps getting bigger.  They will be joined by the newly added back-up singers, The Furies, which bring Fox’s original songs to new heights.

Mr. Fox will also be joined by songwriter and cellist, Kristen Miller, who will also offer her own set of Middle Eastern infused compositions, as well as the best cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” ever heard.

Local music staple Dan King will open the night with his rootsy sound that is known to turn any audience into a family.  Local songwriter and artist, Deb Hardy will perform with her vocal group, HUM.

The night will also feature an African Drum ensemble and both traditional and contemporary dance.   A speaker from Partners in Health will explain exactly where and how funds will be used.

“For ten dollars you’re going to experience a great night,” Brian King promises. “And you’re going to be glad that you’re HERE FOR HAITI.”

Please, contact Brian King hewasacloud@hotmail.com for high-resolution pictures of the Saut d’Eau Waterfall taken by Chloe, Chloe in Haiti, and images of the performers.

“Big fun this thursday as we welcome back slumlord and guitar gunslinger Mr. Billy Loosigian, the scourge of N.H. stripmalls. Y’all remember Billy, or is it Buffalo Bilious, the famous juggler of hot blues lix, ancient rock’n’roll samples and general musical magician, courtesy of Willie Alexander’s Ragtime Band. Billy is one of the most sought-after call guys on the Boston circuit, and we got ‘im, and we’re gonna  blow a fuse. Wear rubber gloves. And, oh, by the way, girls, he’s single! and not even remotely gay! And lives out of town! Get in line! I’m sellin’ tickets!
Blacking him up will be our own Frosty The Snowman, Mr. Forrest Padgett, on Drummbulators, the nicest guy I’ve ever known, and of, course, Greg T. on catarrh, and myselph, on base. We’re gonna romp and stomp till midnite. Honk and sneeze till daylite. You come, too.”

Music at the Cape Ann Museum on Fridays at Noon

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present free noontime concerts in the Museum’s Sculpture Garden on Fridays during the month of August. Performers for the remainder of the month will be James White on August 21 and The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra on August 28.

The Pleasant Street Tea Company and Lark Fine Foods have generously donated beverages and cookies for these events. In the event of rain, the performances will take place inside the Museum.

James White, now a resident of Gloucester, is originally from England. He has been writing music since the 1970s, playing and performing in both Europe and New England as well as doing session work with his first instrument, the electric violin.

The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra is based in London, England. The orchestra specializes in the type of light classical music from the late nineteenth, early twentieth century that is usually referred to as Palm Court Music or Salon Music. The ensemble consists of a string quartet, piano, flute and oboe.

Funding for this program was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors and students. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

“Big fun this week as Justin Quinn returns for a nite of Chicago-style blues. Justin is a fine harpist and vocalist and has great cowboy boots. He’ll be burnin’ his leather on  the floor with the likes of Jon Ross, formerly Duke Robillard’s bassist, now on guitar; got that old sound goin’…. and Per Hanson, James Cotton’s drummer on…guess….drums! Greg and I will be there too, meddling and obfuscating our way thru the furrows of the blues.

This is a great unit….some of you may have purchased a CD last time around. Bring some cash and buy another one  this time , you won’t be disappointed!

Again, I lost a lot of my fan files, so if you know someone who wants in, send ’em to me!”

KBGM Release Party Reminder

Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30 and in Gloucester at Elliotts at the Blackburn on Friday, July 31. The band, also known as KBMG, will play in support of their latest studio album, Western Color. KBMG played most recently to a fantastic audience at the Berklee Performance Center and are pleased to be back in Boston.

Their first combined full-length studio effort, Western Color, overflows with wasted love, light, rumors, and castaways—a ragged journey of sound and story combining folk, rock, and roots influences.

A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area.

CD’s will be available for purchase. Featuring new hits, Goodnight Romeo, When it Comes Down to Love, Raggedy and more!

Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud7NoYKz_9A for the Goodnight Romeo video

Thanks and see you soon!

Local Musicians CD release party in Cambridge

Dan King etc oval2
KBMG at the Berklee Preformance Center

BOSTON, MA: Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30.

A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area

Guitarist David Brown is resident of Gloucester, Mass. and is a guitar legend, known for his work with Billy Joel, Dr. John, and Simon and Garfunkel. Brown’s Dobro and electric guitar are staples of the album and each note serves the gravelly no-frills roots-rock vibe of Western Color.

Wolf Ginandes lives in Framingham, Mass. and is a bass veteran known around the Berklee campus, Boston, and beyond. Among others, he’s played with GE Smith and The Mohegan Sun All-Stars, and his purposeful sound and obvious joy are heard throughout the album.

Drummer Dave Mattacks started performing with big bands in the UK before he joined the influential folk/rock group Fairport Convention. In 2000, Mattacks emigrated to Boston, where he continues to enjoy a full career as both a musician and a producer, spanning live and studio work. Mattacks’s discography includes five CDs with Paul McCartney and various albums and tours with—among many others—Nick Drake, Brian Eno, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Cat Stevens, XTC, and Loudon Wainwright.

An accomplished musician, King has played all over New England and both coasts. Highlights include the Indie Music awards at the famous Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, along side Luke Temple at Arlene’s Grocery and the Knitting Factory in New York City as well as being in Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday Band jamming with Whoopi and Robin Williams at The Cutting Room also in NYC.  He sites the moment Whoopi introduced him to Keith Richards and Ron Wood of the Stones backstage at Fenway Park as “the highlight of it all.”  He has also worked with Tom Hambridge, Willie Alexander and Tony Goddess, to name just a few.

King believes Western Color is the “epitome of the sound we’ve been striving for, I can’t imagine being able to work with a better group of musicians.”

GimmeSound- Free Legal Music Downloads Video

Fellow Block Party organizer and super duper good egg Vickie Van Ness explains the way Gimme Sound works.  This is pretty freaking bad ass.  It’s this simple- you go to the site- http://www.gimmesound.com/ and you download music for free.  No gimmicks – no special software to download that’s gonna mess up your computer, just great free music.  The bands that have their music listed on the site get paid by Gimme Sound through ad revenue.

It’s totally legal, totally free and there are great local musicians listed on there such as Dan King, Allen Estes, Henri Smith, Karen Ristuben and Will Hunt.  There are many other nationally recognized musicians too.  What are you waiting for get some free music!!!!!!!
