DUCKWORTH’S REOPENS FOR THE SEASON WITH A BEAUTIFUL NEW LOOK

Our cherished and favorite neighborhood gathering place, Chef Ken and Nicole Duckworth’s, has reopened for the season and it looks stunning. Inspired by the surrounding coastal hues of deep marine blue, Cape Ann’s rugged granite outcroppings, and the soft gray green of fog and mist, you will love the new look.

The new lighting beautifully illuminates the artwork.

The familiar, warm French cherrywood chairs makes for a lovely counterpoint to the new seaside colors and are a refreshing change.

Many of Ken’s classic dishes remain on the menu, but there are some wonderful new additions coming. And Ken has a fantastic new cooktop and oven!!!

New carpeting, fresh paint, new chair covers, lovely new bathroom. AND SAME WONDERFUL STAFF! Come see and enjoy a most fabulous dining experience at the always fun and elegant Duckworth’s.

A fresh new sign to accompany the new interior look. Note the sign no longer says Bistrot and that is because Ken and Nicole are planning to hold more intimate gatherings and parties.

TREMENDOUS EVENING OF BOOKS, CONVERSATION, AND WONDERFUL DINING WITH THE NEW GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL JAMES COOK, CHEF KEN DUCKWORTH, AND THE LIT HOUSE BOOK CLUB

James Cook copyright Kim SmithJames Cook, the newly appointed Gloucester High School’s principal led a thoughtful conversation on Rebecca Solnit’s The Faraway Nearby. It was a pleasure to meet Principal Cook. He has been a teacher at GHS since 1999, most recently as the head of the English Language Arts Department. Principal Cook also spent nine years coaching the boys soccer team, five years as head coach, as well as serving as the faculty advisor for the environmental club, human rights club, student newspaper, and literary and arts magazine. A fantastic win for Gloucester students and faculty in appointing Principal Cook!DSCF2384

DSCF2404If you’ve never been to a Lit House book club event, please come! The events are open to Everyone. And if like me, you sometimes don’t have time to read the book before the event, after attending you’ll be inspired to do so. And of course we have the best food of any book club, with fabulous dinners prepared by Chef Ken Duckworth.DSCF2396

DSCF2400DSCF2390On August 21st, author Anna Solomon will be moderating a discussion on The Hours by Michael Cunningham. Click here to find out more and purchase tickets.

During The Faraway Nearby event we briefly discussed an essay by Solonit, which included the topic about moths drinking the tears of sleeping birds. I was reminded of this famous photo of a butterfly kissing turtle tears (some butterflies also drink crocodile tears, too!). Species of butterflies and moths that drink the fluid of another creature’s eyes are actually extracting much needed salts, minerals, and proteins from the liquids. As Lepidoptera are herbivores, they look for minerals from other sources outside their diet, including mud puddles and human perspiration. Male Lepidoptera especially seek additional sodium for egg production. This behavior is known as lachryphagy.

There are still a few seats available for the next Duckworth’s Eastern Point Lit House Book Club event (Sunday evening, March 20th). Ken, Chris, Jenn, Michelle, and Colleen do a beautiful job welcoming guests, and if you haven’t been, they provide wonderful evenings of, quite possibly, the best book club fare ever, freely flowing wine, and great discussions.

IMG_6480Last month’s discussion was led by Eastern Point Lit House co-founders Jenn Monroe and Chris Anderson.

Don’t be intimidated if you haven’t read the book in time for the event (which is oftentimes the case with me). I’m usually so inspired after the discussion, I find the time.

Happy 65th Wedding Anniversary!

Can you imagine–sixty five years–truly an inspiration!

June 24th was my mother and father-in-laws 65th wedding anniversary. We’ve been celebrating all week and last night we had a beautiful dinner at Duckworth’s, our family’s go-to place for special occasions (and every other excuse to head to dinner there). Dinner was beautiful in every way, from the exquisite entrees, appetizers, and desserts to the outstanding service provided by Dan and Colleen. Thank you Duckworth Family for making our family’s celebration wonderfully memorable.

A Duckworth’s Valentine’s

Thanks to the fabulous Chef Ken Duckworth, along with his wonderfully welcoming and hard working staff, for making a Valentine’s to remember. Duckworth’s was overflowing with guests last night–no one wanted to leave as it was so warm and cozy there–and Tom and I just had the best time catching up with neighborhood friends. We all relished in our good fortune to be seated at the Duckworth’s Table for Valentine’s Day. Thank you Chef Ken and Family for the Best Ever Valentine’s Day Dinner!

Lobster Risotto Ken Duckworth ©Kim Smith 2015Chef Ken’s Sublime Lobster Risotto ~ Tip: order the full serving and eat half (not to worry, the portions are hugely generous). Eat the other half for lunch the following day–doubly delish! Apologies please, my grainy phone photos don’t do this favorite dish justice.
