Cape Ann Symphony Board President Thomas Mannle announced the Annual Meeting of Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra, Inc originally scheduled forWednesday, January 17 has been postponed because of the approaching winter storm. The new date for the Annual Meeting of the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra, Inc. will be Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at 7:30pm at the Gloucester House Restaurant, 63 Rogers Street, Gloucester, MA. The meeting will be preceded by a cocktail reception at 6:30pm. ($36. per person/ cash bar). It is not necessary to attend the reception in order to attend the Annual Meeting. This joyful Cape Ann Symphony holiday tradition features a program of holiday favorites by Leroy Anderson, Vaughn Williams, Delius, Leontovich, Pierpont and Mozart as well as the annual audience sing along. Cape Ann Symphony Celebrates Successful 65th Concert Season
The Board of Directors of the Cape Ann Symphony hosted a pre-concert reception at Innovation House in Magnolia, MA to celebratethe conclusion of the orchestra’s highly successful 65th season of concerts. According to Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor, Yoichi Udagawa, ” The 65th season was a resounding success! The musicians and I were so eager to share all the wonderful music with our audiences and the fabulous CAS audiences responded – All of the concerts in the 65th season were sold out! Bravo!” Invited guests at the season ending celebration included major donors, diplomats representing Scandinavian countries, and members of Cape Ann’s Scandinavian community in recognition of the theme of thefinal concert of the 65th season: “Scandinavian Spectacular,” featuring works by Sibelius, Nielsen and Grieg. A proclamation from Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo-Theken designating the day of the concert, Scandinavian Heritage Day, was read to the crowd of overfifty people, along with similar proclamations from the other Cape Ann municipalities. Congratulatory notes from the consul generals of Norway and Finland were also shared with the reception guests. Next season, the Symphony’s 66th, opens with a program called “Russian Fireworks” with two performances: Saturday, September 23 at the Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium and Sunday, September 24 in the Dolan Performing Arts Center at Ipswich High School.

According to Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor Yoichi Udagawa, “The Romantic Masters program for March 26thfeatures the music of Rossini, Saint-Säens and Dvorak. The Rossini is energetic and fun-full of high spirits. The Saint-Säens is work of perfect proportion and balance. Virtuoso BSO cellist Blaise Déjardin will be the soloist. He is an amazing musician, and it is his first appearance with the Cape Ann Symphony. We are very excited to be working with him. The Dvorak Symphony No. 8 has one gorgeous melody followed by another and then another and then another! During the concert, we will take a few minutes to show the audience some incredibly intricate and beautiful details that are in the music, in the hope that it will add to their appreciation and understanding of the music.”
Born in Strasbourg, France, cellist Blaise Déjardin made his orchestradebut at age fourteen, performing Haydn’s C Major Concerto at the Corum of Montpellier, France. He was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester, as well as a founding member of A Far Cry. A dedicated chamber musician, he spent two summers at Ravinia’s Steans Institute for Young Artists prior to joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2008. That same year, he gave the US premiere of Les formes du ventfor cello solo by French composer Edith Canat de Chizy. Cape Ann Symphony’s May Concert features The Three B’s: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms: a trio of renowned composers; and world class soloists: violinist Lucia Lin, cellist Owen Young and pianist Robert Levin on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 8pm at the CAS performance venue at Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. These three powerful soloists join the orchestra for Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano. The concert program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor; guest artist renowned guitar virtuoso Grisha Goryachev in his Cape Ann Symphony debut playing the exotic Spanish guitar concerto, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez; and the world premiere of Araumi to Nagi (Stormy and Calm Seas) from Boston based Japanese composer Takashi Koto. Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor Yoichi Udagawa is eager to take audiences on this musical journey, “The fantastic musicians of the Cape Ann Symphony and I are thrilled to be able to perform such a varied and colorful program to our fabulous audience.” He is enthusiastic about the music set for the concert, “Our March concert features the fiery and explosive power of Beethoven’sSymphony No. 5 – one of the most dramatic and well known works of symphonic music ever written. It is a favorite of audiences, and we musicians love to play it! The Russian American guitar virtuoso Grisha Goryachev will join us as the featured soloist playing the gorgeous Concierto de Aranjuez by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. The concert opens with the world premiere of Boston based composer Takashi Koto’sAraumi to Nagi (Stormy and Calm Seas). Inspired by the rhythms used by taiko drummers, this exciting new work is a musical description of the sea.”

The Cape Ann Symphony’s annual Holiday Pops Concert, an exciting celebration of holiday music favorites including an audience sing-along, kicks off the holiday season on Saturday, November 28 at 8 pm & Sunday, November 29 at 2 pm. This joyful Cape Ann Symphony holiday tradition features the Cape Ann Symphony Chorus under the direction of Rockport’s Wendy Betts performing songs of the season with the orchestra under the musical direction of conductor Yoichi Udagawa. The 2015 Holiday Pops Concert features the return of “Yankee Swap!: White Elephant Gift Exchange” from Suite No. 4 “Cape Ann” for orchestra by Robert J. Bradshaw, a Gloucester based composer and CAS member. “Yankee Swap!” is a super fun musical take on the New England holiday tradition. “Yankee Swap!” wascommissioned by Cape Ann Symphony and premiered at the 2013 Holiday Pops Concert.
