More Farmer’s Market craze

Thursday, 3-6:30 at Stage Fort Park! Don’t miss it! It’s not just food (as if delicious local food were not a sufficient reason to go…); there are also people selling cookbooks, pottery, and art; plus there are art activities for the kids, run by teens from Art Haven.

One of the things I like most about the Farmer’s Market is that the people who are selling things there are usually closely involved in the production of what they sell.  That makes a world of difference; you can see that they are proud of what they are selling, they really know it inside and out, and they are convinced of its value. Their enthusiasm is contagious!  And they often offer free samples.  So, be forewarned: you are likely to spend more money than you planned to.  But that’s OK, it’s supporting the local economy!

Here are some photos from last week. Click on the block of thumbnails to see a slideshow, or scroll down to see some of the photos larger without leaving the post.

Many thanks,

Video How To Fillet A Codfish Demonstration With Steve Parkes At July 21, 2011 Cape Ann Farmer’s Market

Sugar Magnolia Spicing Up Seafood Throwdown for the Fourth Season Today At The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market

Seafood Throwdown returns to the Cape Ann Farmerʼs Market at Stage Fort Park on
Thursday, July 21st at 4 p.m. This marks the fourth season for this popular cooking contest where the fish always wins and consumers are inspired to think about the role our fishing communities play in ocean conservation. Missy Sallah will once again brings her team from Sugar Magnolias on 112 Main Street to defend her undefeated title as the “Reigning Queen of Seafood Throwdown” for the fourth year. She will be competing
against Julie Ann Geary with the team from Classic Cooks Catering at 10 Blackburn Center. No stranger to cooking, Julie has been in the catering and cooking business for thirty years. We will again be joined with Steve Parkes and his popular demonstration of how to fillet a fish – successfully, Joey Ciaramitaro of Good Morning Gloucester, and Peter van Ness of GimmeSound.

Judging this event will be Loretta Lomba, director of the Chill Zone and a regular behind the Backyard Gardenerʼs table at the farmers market, a member of the Gloucester Fishermenʼs Wives Association and Heather Fraelick, a local foodie and fitness expert. The dishes created by Missy and Julie will be judged on taste, use of the whole animal, originality and presentation.

Seafood Throwdown is a brainchild of the partnership between the Cape Ann Farmerʼs Market and NAMA, the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance. Originally conceived as a tool to promote a Community Supported Fishery, or “CSF” here in Gloucester, the successful program has now expanded to over 20 CSFs throughout North America (visit http://www.localcatch.org for more details). The local CSF, Cape Ann Fresh Catch, is a project of the Gloucester Fishermenʼs Wives Association and is in its third year of operation and delivering to a far greater audience than just Cape Ann with 16 Greater Boston distribution points now being served.
As well as promoting the CSF concept, the Seafood Throwdown brings home the message that “Who Fishes Matters” and that principled choice driven by an educated consumer is a way of promoting needs of both ecological and economic realities. The Market opens at 3pm, the contest starts at 4pm and donʼt forget – the parking is free on market days.
A second Seafood Throwdown at Cape Ann Farmers Market is scheduled for August 11th. Once again this year the Seafood Throwdown season is being kicked off in New York at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket in Brooklyn. Other events are scheduled for New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival, Marthaʼs Vineyard, New Hampshireʼs Fishtival and the Common Ground Country Fair in Maine, amongst others. Seafood Throwdown Details From the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market

Seafood Throwdown at Cape Ann Farmers Market

Date:

Thursday, July 15, 2010 – 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Rogers Street, Gloucester, Massachusetts

Seafood Throwdowns were born at the Cape Ann Farmers Market two summers ago. This year, Seafood Throwdowns are back at the Farmers Market’s new location on Rogers Street.

Seafood Throwdown season returns to Gloucester this Thursday, July 15 starting at 4 p.m. at the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market new location on Rogers St. The reigning queen of the Throwdowns, Missy Hart and her Team Sugar Magnolias will once again defend her Throwdown title against Ryan Cox’s team from the Farm Bar and Grille in Essex. While new to the Seafood Throwdown, Ryan’s team is no stranger to competition and innovation as seen in their most recent event “The Farm at Sea” which was held on a boat.

Seafood Throwdowns are an opportunity learn more about our local seafood, local fishing fleet and fisheries related issues affecting our ocean, fishing economies and coastal food systems.  Chefs Hart and Cox will educate and entertain you with their skills as they show how to work with whole, fresh, and very local seafood. Chefs can bring three of their favorite ingredients and once they discover the secret seafood they will be using, they get $25 and 15 minutes to shop the Farmers’ Market for ingredients.  After their shopping spree, they have one hour to cook and present their entry for the judge’s consideration. This is a free event, open
to the public.  Tastings will be available for farmer’s market shoppers.

The event is a collaboration between the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance, Cape Ann Farmers Market, Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association and the Cape Ann Fresh Catch Community Supported Fishery (CSF).  It promises to be a fun, educational and community-driven activity designed to link the importance of locally caught seafood to the health and resilience of our ocean.

See you there!
