Dave Jewell brought in this blue tinted lobster. It isn’t nearly as blue as some of the other ones we’ve got in the past but I thought I’d throw the pic up anyway to add to the collection. To see the mutated lobster and crab slide show click this text

This rare blue lobster was caught by Horace Lindberg Jr. (Dad) aboard the Brother II circa 1970’s. He gave it to the UMass Marine Biology Station in Bay View. They said the chances of “catching” this rare lobster was about 1 in 5 million. He had t-shirts mad up with the boat name and the slogan “one in 5 million”
Around one in two million lobsters is blue. A research study conducted by Professor Ronald Christensen at the University of Connecticutdiscovered that a genetic defect causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of protein.[4] The protein, and a red carotenoidmolecule known as astaxanthin, combine to form a blue complex known as crustacyanin, giving the lobster its blue color.[5]
Funny, notice the pegs, haven’t seen those in a long time.
There are controls to pause the pictures of go directly to the album by clicking on the slide show.
This is an updated version of the old “Freaks Of The Lobster and Crab World Slide Show”. I doubt anyone else has a collection of pictures that they’ve taken first hand of this many mutations.

Last night Captain Bob Beloff who owns the New Horizons landed a partially blue lobster. We get odd items every so often like double clawed lobsters or crabs and such. I figure we get about one or two really blue lobsters a year.
Here are some pics of the one landed last night
