Bearskin Neck has its Own Website! Update From Angela Cook

Some of the merchants on Bearskin Neck created a great new website with photos provided courtesy of Angela Cook of Oasis Rockport (near Helmut’s Strudel at the end of the Neck). Check it out for maximum information on all things ‘Neck-related in Rockport, www.bearskinneck.net, and be sure to tell ’em you heard about it here on GMG!

Clarification from Angela Cook-

Hi Joey

I heard that you posted about the BearskinNeck.Net site.  Thank you.  One thing that I want to clarify, though, is that this was not set up by the merchants.  It was a joint effort between Oasis Rockport and WebWeDoIt.  This is a site that offers a source of information for people visiting the area and listings for all the merchants.  It will be a valuable resource and a great method of generating more business for the downtown Rockport merchants.  Prior to the start of the season, there are some great promotions going on for enhanced listings and online promo packages for merchants.  There are plans for growth and expansion of the site as time goes on and a focus on activities in the area as well as featured businesses listed on social media sites associated with BearskinNeck.Net.  It will be the go-to place for all things Rockport.

Thanks
Angela

Chris Coyne fine art

On one of my recent expeditions to Bearskin Neck I ventured into Chris Coyne’s gallery, “Chris Coyne Fine Art + Design“.

The entrance to his gallery at 37 Bearskin Neck

The painting in his window is almost identical to a photo I posted not long ago. He has good taste in subject matter…

My photo of the same subject:

Chris was kind enough to pose with his artwork, which is quite beautiful:

I really liked his painting of a Rockport landmark, Tuck’s. The façade seems to glow with its own light!

His work is offered at a wide range of sizes and prices. It’s worth stopping by for a visit, maybe for a last-minute Christmas shopping trip. According to his website, the gallery is “open year-round by chance or by appointment.”

Eugene Quinn gallery reception

Yesterday, I stopped by the Eugene Quinn gallery again (54 Bearskin Neck, Rockport), for a reception and opening of a new show of paintings, including works by Eugene Quinn himself, Colin McGuire, and Jill Demeri.

Works by Jill Demeri are also on display

It’s well worth a visit!

The Pewter Shop

As I mentioned in another post, I went down to Bearskin Neck one evening last week in search of Christmas decorations to photograph. A variety of the shops have nice window displays, but one of the few places that is really lit up is the Pewter Shop. You can’t miss it!

Recently, we (Holy Family Parish) bought a set of pewter cups and bowls from this shop for use at Mass, and at the time I was impressed by both their beautiful variety of pewter wares and the friendliness of the proprietors.  I decided to go back to photograph some of the beautiful things they sell. It would be a good place to go for some elegant Christmas or Chanukah gifts.

Zan welcomed me to the store
Walking in and seeing everything shine makes quite a first impression.

Among the treasures they offer is a large variety of Christmas tree decorations.

Being a deyed-in-the-wool fantasy fan, I count these dragons among my favorite items in the store. I'll buy one someday...
Irish Pewter

They aren’t kidding about this being “Irish Pewter”. I saw these same items being sold in gift shops in Ireland earlier this year. Surprisingly, the price at this shop in Rockport is as good or better than what I saw in Ireland…

Don’t forget to go through to the back side of the store (as I did the first time I was there)…

Don't miss it!

New Pizza Place in Rockport Takes it To Another Level

Rockport is blessed with so much: several beautiful beaches, a vibrant arts community, historic wharves & buildings, lobstering industry…you could go on and on. And now, you can add the Atlantic Pizza Company to our list of blessings. Housed in the architecturally compelling former Al Ruben Gallery, the Atlantic Pizza Company was created, like its pizza, from scratch. Audra Dainora, the owner of the business, bought the building in April 2010. She proceeded to spend the summer season watching traffic patterns and chatting with visitors to Rockport when she noticed that so many questions from tourists had to do with finding somewhere to eat, especially somewhere casual. Audra saw the opportunity to fill a niche in the community, offering fresh pizza with the best ingredients: organic tomatoes and toppings that are sourced from local farms whenever possible. Together with Dan Cromidas, who helped with the conception and development of the pizza and can now be found working his magic in the kitchen, Audra brought the Atlantic Pizza Company to Rockport. Reading through the menu is a mouth-watering proposition, and I can attest to the fact that the Margherita Pizza was delicious, the thin crust crisp on the outside, perfectly chewy on the inside, while the basil and mozzarella and tomato competing for freshness. (Full disclosure: I also tasted the cheese pizza, which features an amazing mozzarella, unlike any I’ve ever tasted.) But it should be said: it’s not all about the pizza at this restaurant. The building itself lives up to the food. Audra hired the design firm Siemasko & Verbridge, based in Beverly with John Harden as the project’s architect, to take advantage of the building’s pitched roof and, as it was built in 1961, take it back to its mid-century glory: a combination of minimalism and New England rusticity. Which is like the best of Rockport itself: quintessential New England with a dose of high design.

So make your way down to Bearskin Neck and stop by Atlantic Pizza just as soon as you can. You can work your way down the menu with a few breaks in between for a swim at Front Beach and a stroll through the shops and galleries of downtown Rockport. Summer perfection.

A big celebration is planned for Mother’s Day weekend. Oasis Rockport, the newest Bearskin Neck art gallery, is holding their Grand Opening. The gallery features fine art scenic photography from Angela Cook. Angela’s focus is on dramatic seascapes and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets as well as many beautiful floral, wildlife and wilderness images. When asked about her photography, Angela is quoted as saying “I enjoy sharing the beauty, emotion and simplicity of life with my images.” Angela is a local photographer who loves Cape Ann and wants to share the beauty of that with her customers. Oasis Rockport will not just offer photos. There will be regularly scheduled walking photo tours as well as outdoor portrait shoots. Angela also plans on including some beautiful semi-precious stone jewelry crafted by Sharon Lane in her gallery as well as select hand-made keepsakes designed by Suzanne Ouellette. The Grand Opening of Oasis Rockport will be held May 7th from 9am to 6pm and May 8th from 10am to 5pm. There will be giveaways, refreshments and a good time to be had by all. The Ice Cream Store, Bearskin Neck

At five in the morning Bearskin Neck is a great place for a walk.

Nice and quiet. The next afternoon walking out on the Lumber Wharf with our ice cream from The Ice Cream Store (daughter is in love with Purple Cow) and a Latte from Bean and Leaf I started to wonder what if.

What if the Large Family who really liked ice cream showed up. Say, six really large ice cream lovers, ordered Banana Splits then went to the back table of The Ice Cream Store and all sat down to eat. If I was at the counter ordering my one scoop of Purple Cow Cone and heard some wood creaking I think I would run for the door.

The green building to the right is the Bean and Leaf. Great Latte’s cookies, chowder, (that’s all I get, I bet the other stuff is good too.) Free WiFi. I’ve been in the back window of Bean and Leaf for a high tide with a Nor’ Easter pushing swells into Old Harbor and the waves would occasionally slap up against the building.

Top Dog Lobster Roll

As much as I heartily recommend y’all going to Top Dog on Bearskin Neck if you’ve read any of my rantings about lobster rolls then you know my take on what place lettuce or celery has on a lobster roll-none.

I’d ask for it “Joey-Style” and when they look at you with a puzzled look on their face because they’ll inevitably have no idea what “Joey-Style” means, tell them “without the lettuce- DUH!

We will forgive this minor transgression because everything else at this place was outstanding.

Whoa! Everyone got it right! Paul, humble as he is :),identified it first. Are you accepting the prize, Paul??

Here’s what people said-

capeannpainter:”Rockport Harbor either that or Lanes Cove. ;]”

Robert Blazewicz: “Location: Rockport, boat launch off of Mt Pleasent St, between T Wharf and Bearskin Neck looking toward Bearskin Neck and one of my grandparent’s Rockport residences, the squat one.” (Hey, this must be Jessica’s dad!)

capeannpainter: “I know where it is but I Ain’t saying.
It’s not Lane’s Cove. And it’s not in Gloucester.
Sharon will yell at me for winning another prize.”

Jade: “Is this in the little cove off of Bearskin Neck?”

Kelly Howard:”Hi! I know the location of “Where’s Zat” #30.
It is Rockport Harbor, along Bearskin Neck.”

Hedgie:”Dock Square Boat Ramp in Rockport looking toward Bearskin Neck.
Recognized Sharon watching the parade near Dock Square as we were marching by. Thanks for supporting Rockport!”

Dana:”That looks like a view from Rockport boat ramp at Dock Square looking toward Bearskin Neck”

Well that was fun! See you next week! —Sharon
