Brendan Harlem Art At The Art Haven Art Show

Not only was the event at Cruiseport a buoy auction but it was also an art show.  Here is a beautiful peice by Brendan Harlem.  There’s some serious talent brewing over at Art Haven.

Janice Lufkin Shea Won Georgie Hansen’s Lobster Buoy With an $85 Bid

Going once….

bruce-tarr

Sen. Bruce Tarr keeps up with the cut-throat bidding with Joey nervously pacing the floor. All in vain, though. The bidding went too high, and Joey went home buoy-less.  So sad.

Art Haven Lobster Buoy Auction- Live At Cruiseport Video

You are not going to believe how much some of these buoys sold for.

Watch the video by clicking the picture below to see how much.

Art Haven Lobster Bouys Up For Auction

Here is the buoy that I so desperately wanted.  I was foiled though as I quickly realized that if I came home with a $200 lobster buoy that the Mrs would likely beat me over the head with it.

It was fun bidding though.  Video coming at 8:00AM

Senator Tarr Auctions Off Georgie Hansen’s Buoy

Forgive the terrible picture quality.   I did a horrible job shooting the pictures as I was distracted all night trying to figure out how I was going to steal away the lobster buoy with the lobster on it (more on that later).

But this was the scene with each child holding up their hand painted buoy and Senator Tarr auctioning them off.  I don’t know how he held his voice up for that long but he did a remarkable job.    Georgie is the daughter of good eggs Dave and Erika Hansen.  Erika was sitting in front of Janice Lufkin Shea and I and facing the stage.  When the bidding started she had no idea that she was bidding against Janice and I who were standing right behind her while she was facing the stage.  The bidding quickly escalated and when all was said and done Janice won out with an $85 bid.

The whole night was a huge success and I have to believe that they didn’t anticipate how many people showed up and actively bid.  When there is a great cause our community steps up and this was certainly a great cause.

Classy broad that Janice is she gave the buoy that she had just won back to Erika.

Don’t anyone even think about getting into a bidding war with me at tomorrow nights lobster buoy auction to benefit Art Haven at Cruiseport.  I have my eye on that lobster buoy and I don’t want things to get ugly  so just stay the hell away from bidding on the lobster one.

Are we clear?

Received this info from David Brooks-

ART HAVEN  ART SHOW

2009 Programs Fundraiser

Dear Friends,

On January 30th, Cape Ann Art Haven will be conducting its first ever Art Show and fundraiser. For the last 6 months, Art Haven has been offering art lessons after school in the heart of down town Gloucester. During this time, our Main St. studio has been a headquarters for young artists to meet and develop friendships. Many of the children we serve have trouble expressing themselves through conventional extra curricular activities, such as sports. Art Haven is a place where children can be proud of what they can accomplish. Since our opening, all staff at Art Haven have been volunteers, and have occasionally paid for the supplies for fun projects out of their own pockets.  Proceeds from the art show will contribute to funding for this new year, and we, as well as all the children who take classes at Art Haven, are looking forward to displaying the artwork they have created.

This will be a great time to meet those who are involved in Art Haven. There will be buffet dishes donated by many Gloucester Restaurants (Lat 43, Thai Choice, Azorean, Sebastian’ Pizza, Jalapenos, Chili Choice and more…), as well as a cash bar.  Also, Senator Bruce Tarr will be auctioning off painted buoys from this years lobster trap Christmas tree. We hope to see you there! Tickets are only $5.00!! Be there at 6 pm.

Community Art Project At The Green House-A Note From Emily Sinagra

Hi Joey:
It was great to run into you at Alexandra’s. Thanks for taking pictures of the art installation project at Intershell which was made possible through a PWA Grant from SeARTS. The purpose of the project was to enable people of all ages to engage in artistic collaboration. The inspiration and literary link for the project was a story by Captain R. Barry Fisher called “The Wharf Rat’s Tale”. About four boys growing up in Gloucester during the Depression. In the story, the boys were given a couple of old Dories and had to salvage bits and pieces to make one of them seaworthy. It is a coming of age story- the boys overcome obstacles and become real “Dorymen” and sail off into the future. It made me start wondering, What do we want to salvage from our past to take us into our future? What is the ‘coming of age’ story for kid’s today? Where are we going as a community? No better way to explore these questions than through art. The event began at 10:00 and lasted all day–there were parents and small children as well as teen agers. All making their mark. Some people came just to observe. So it was an interactive artistic, performance piece. I had a copy of the story on the wall and used pieces of the text as creative prompts. People could do anything they wanted to do. There was was no agenda other than the context of the building and it’s location at 54 Commercial street. I am hoping to display these panels in a more public place soon. Also, to develop other collaborative artistic events, using theater and art, to be performed in non-traditional venues. I think it is especially important that kids have a chance to contribute and demonstrate their vision. It is also important to recognize the support of businesses like Ben’s Paint who donated all the paint and supplies and Intershell who donated the use of the building. THANK YOU!

Community Art Project At The Green House

Here is the location on Monte Rome’s Intershell Property that hosted the seARTS community art project during the Partner with an Artist installations.  (the same seARTS project that brought Mark Teiwes’ At The Brink project to Captain Joe’s)

It looks pretty drab right?   Just wait til you see what is inside!  A vibrant collection of paint and ideas which will be displayed on these pages.

The Cape Ann YMCA Teen Leaders and Art Haven collaborated to produce the October 11th community art project at the green house at 54 Commercial Street to transform the interior and exterior of the building. Ben’s Paint Store  generously donated supplies to help the artists. Monte Rome, owner of InterShell is thrilled to have the space used for a community learning and experiential event and hopes to attract more in the future.

Thanks To Emily Sinagra, one of the team that brought this project to life for letting me in to photograph yesterday.
