Donated Socks and Underwear Pour InRemarkable Generosity from Customers and Store Owners in Gloucester and Rockport

The Socks and Underwear Drive sponsored by the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church ended on May 31 but that hasn’t stopped the flow of donations. The church has received more than 300 undergarments, over 500 pairs of socks, and they’re still counting!

Two local clothing stores, Nelson’s in Gloucester and the John Tarr Store in Rockport, supported the cause by collecting donated items, but they didn’t stop there. They offered sales to make donating more affordable and made their own generous gifts to the drive. The Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport aided the effort by providing a collection site and encouraging members to donate.

Kate Ruzecki, volunteer and board member at the Gloucester Church described the bounty, “A sock is no longer just a sock. There are crew, and ankle and no-show in every color, fabric and package size – charming socks for the littlest kids – every cute shape, size and color. One pair looks like safari camouflage with tiny little animals. We have small boys’ underwear in bright metallic shades, and girls’ in pretty colors and designs. We even have men’s long underwear donated by Nelson’s to keep people warm next winter.”

Church volunteers have turned all the cash donations into garments, buying sizes and types that were under-represented in the donation bins. The Grace Center, a local nonprofit providing day services to adults who are homeless or in need of support, will receive and distribute the adult size donations. Pathways for Children, a local nonprofit providing education and support to low income families, will recieve and distribute the child size items. There will be a lot of happy feet (not to mention bottoms) on Cape Ann children and adults this coming year.

Holly Tanguay, Co-president of the Gloucester church expressed heartfelt thanks for donors’ generosity, “Inflation is pinching our purses and Covid is making everyday life more challenging but neither burden stopped the citizens of Gloucester and Rockport from demonstrating how much they care about their neighbors. We are awestruck by the generosity demonstrated here.”

Volunteers Kate Ruzecki and Lucille Amero of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church sort through a wealth of donations:

Jane Deering Gallery group show: Gloucester . Cape Ann | modern conversations

Jane Deering Gallery is pleased to present

Gloucester . Cape Ann | modern conversations

June 9 – June 29, 2022

Opening Reception on Saturday June 11th from 3-6pm.

Artists working in Gloucester, and more broadly on Cape Ann, have a unique vision of the promontory. What is their feel for our place along the sea? And how do they wish to present it to us, the viewers of their thoughts? Each exploration of light, land, sky, stone, architecture, industry, and countless other features is singular. There is communication between artist and place; and we sense, we hear, those conversations in their art. Participating artists include: Coco Berkman . Ann Conneman . Celia Eldridge . Paige Farrell . Erin Luman . Jeffrey Marshall . Adin Murray . James Paradis . Michael Porter . Christopher Pullman . Esther Pullman . Beverly Ripple . Caleb Hershey Rulli . Juni Van Dyke.

Exhibition at Jane Deering Gallery June 2022

JANE DEERING ABOUT THIS SHOW:

My interest lies in how artists living and working in Gloucester, and more broadly on Cape Ann, express their vision of the promontory. What is their feel for our place along the sea? As they encounter it, and closely observe it, how do they wish to present it to us, the viewers of their thoughts? Each exploration of light, land, sky, stone, architecture, industry, and countless other features is singular. There is communication between artist and place; and we sense, we hear, those conversations in their art.

The New York Times recently penned the phrase to see it all anew, an apt phrase that could easily have been the title for this show.

After giving the gallery to regional artists for their own exhibitions these past months, I am happy to be back at JDG for the summer season. Join me for this first show which celebrates seeing and hearing anew this place of home.

All Lined Up

It’s hard to tell how many boats are all lined up here, but…as always…I found something striking about the composition of all the pieces. A simple photograph with so much going on.

Come On Down To the Visitors Welcome Center at Stage Fort Park

The Visitors Welcome Center at Stage Fort Park has opened for the 2022 season and I remind you that we welcome visitors and residents alike. If you haven’t been inside the beautiful building yet for a look-see (or if it’s been a while), I encourage you to stop by during regular hours (generally open 9 -6 daily until Columbus Day). There’s a wealth of information available that might surprise you, including the volunteers! Susan and I share the Thursday morning shift and you can stop in to say hello. Other wonderful volunteers man the desks all week. It’s a beautiful spot even if you want to just sit on the newly renovated porch for a bit.
