The North Shore Arts Association is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Dennis Poirier, on display in our Hallway Gallery from June 24 – July 6, 2023. A Gloucester native, Dennis learned to paint with John C. Terelak, Ted Goerschner, and Sal Grasso at the Gloucester Academy of Fine Arts in 1976, and later with Don Stone when he moved up to York County, Maine in 1982. He also studied in New York City at the Art Students League of New York with the great painter David A. Leffel and lived there in 1978 and 1979.
The colors, sights, and sounds of Gloucester’s busy port and fishing fleet inspire Dennis’ work in this solo show. Please, join us for the opening reception on Saturday, June 24, from 1-3 PM to meet the artist and celebrate a career of incredible artwork. Admission is free and all are welcome!

Currently, Dennis teaches year-round to all ages and levels – and exhibits at the Wright Gallery in Cape Porpoise, Todd Bonita Gallery in Portsmouth and in Perkins Cove as well as Roux and Cyr gallery in Portland, Maine. Bill Gotha has been painting all his life, but began painting professionally in 2014. He specializes in New England landscapes and seascapes en plein air and in his studio in Andover, MA. His favorite medium is oil paint. Bill is a former naval officer, was an art director for several publishers in the Boston area (including Sail Magazine) and managed an international marketing company for twenty years before launching his painting career. A few photos for those of you from away that might be missing Fiesta. It is off to a great start!
Here’s some of the activity we observed in our backyard here in Magnolia. It’s a neverending tale of shenanigans and nature at work. I was especially interested in the nuzzling/licking behavior of the deer. I had not observed this before and found it fascinating although they seemed to accuse me of being a bit of a Peeping Tom.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our birthday breakfast and panel discussion to celebrate our second year in our new location. It wouldn’t be a celebration without great company, impactful discussions, and a ‘happy birthday’ song from our Early Learning Program. Special shout out to our Executive Director Erina McWilliam-Lopez and our wonderful panel, Elaine McKechnie, Gerald MacKillop, Glen MacLeod, Jack Meany, Tim Flaherty, George Lieser and Chris Lovasco, who shared how the Y and the Gloucester community has impacted their lives and the lives of their families. In just two years, the new Cape Ann Y celebrates more than 11,000 members, nearly $1 million in financial assistance provided so everyone has access to the Y, and more than 400 children learning the life saving skill of swimming through our swim lesson program. With more fitness opportunities, an outdoor splash pad for families, summer camp, early education programming…
