Nearly Every Day

Nearly Every Day

Nearly every day I wander about

with camera in hand (attached like some odd

prosthetic device) trying to capture

the seconds that constitute my life.

It’s as if by snapping the shutter I

assure myself that nothing will change;

the people and places I see and freeze

in time will always be here and I will always

be unseen, but still be part of the whole

of this marvelous place discovered so late.

And those who tend their shops or perfect their art;

who play with their kids and fix and serve our meals,

or prepare their boats for long hauls at sea;

and those who repair our roads, connect our phones,

keep the peace and douse our errant fires and

those who find joy on the water; all those who don’t see me

as I observe them from the docks and corners

and the doorways as I walk  the town

make their lives part of my own and allow

their moments to mingle and merge with mine.

I put my camera to my eye and for one

fraction of a second a silhouette and I are one,

sharing that brief instant, caught forever

in a world that will never change.

Pier Tag & Diving with Zip Line Kid @ Magnolia Pier

Pre-K to college kids to grandpa.  Everybody jumps off Magnolia pier. In this video, we catch part of a game of Pier Tag, followed by some aerial acrobatics and the Zip Line Kid’s first jump off the railing.  Given the ages of some of these kids (and adults) you could say they’ve got at least as much skill and daring as the greasy pole walkers!

It’s a beautiful summer Sunday with over a dozen live music choices on Cape Ann (see full live music lineup here).  Since the weather is soooooo good, consider the Celtic Music Sunset Sail with Michael O’Leary aboard the Schooner Lannon.  Truly acoustic–no mics, no amps, no power except the wind in the sails and the power of great songs and excellent musicianship to move your soul.

Great Mug Up Kim!

It was such a great Mug Up this morning at Kim Smith’s.  Thanks so much.  It was really nice to have a break from hosting Mug Up at the gallery and to just be able to visit and enjoy.  There was a lovely spread of food, as usual, including Kim’s deviled eggs (as well as mine which I brought), two beautiful salads, blueberry bread, cheese and crackers, iced coffee, tea and lemonade, and MONKEY BREAD! that Paul Morrison brought.  Diet went straight out the window! and Rosie never got a crumb.

The Trestle Across Little Good Harbor Beach Gloucester

I found this postcard at a little shop in Beverly Farms. The Community Heritage Map, published in 1889, shows the trestle, but not a later map from the 1930’s. I wonder what it was used to transport–people, granite, fish? On the antique map, the trestle is labeled: Gloucester Street Railway on Trestle. It appears as though the trestle ran through what is now the Good Harbor Beach parking lot.

Double Rainbow fades to Bright Single Rainbow From Bill O’Connor

Hi Joey,

After the storms rolled through tonight (June 22, 2012), a double rainbow  formed over Hawthorne Point that was only partially visible from my perspective.  The cool thing about it was that as the double faded, the single inner rainbow became brighter and brighter – it seemed like the color from the outer rainbow amplified the inner one!

Enjoy!

GloucesterGourmet.Blogspot From Melissa Smith Abbott

image

Hi Joey,
Just checking in with you! I haven’t been all that active with my Tumblr Blog "Gloucester Journal" and guess I sort of fell out of love with Tumblr. I have pulled together a new blog called www.GloucesterGourmet.blogspot.com and my twitter account is @glostagourmet . I am hoping you can switch out the links on your blogroll. Meanwhile, I am looking to retweet your food links to my foodie friends on twitter.
In my new blog,  I will be documenting cooking all the stuff my husband catches on his boat "Blue Pearl" moored in Smith’s Cove. He lobsters, digs clams, and catches fish (non commercial) while I have an incredible backyard garden at my home in East Gloucester where I eat out of my garden 7 months a year. Together we try not to take too many trips to the grocery store while enjoying everything Gloucester has to offer. Many of the things we do are old style things we learned from our grandparents and great grandparents who lived in Gloucester (Both our familys have been on Cape Ann since 1600’s). I think this is a great premise for a local blog and fills a niche so to speak. I am hoping we can trade information and work together a little bit on a networking level. This is not really a commercial venture although I may sell a few of my cookbooks, nothing crazy, more just a thing I am interested in and everyone always tells me I should share it cause I do things people don’t do much anymore.
Anyway, Thanks in advance for switching out the websites on your blogroll: Let me know if you have any cool ideas for networking. OLD SITE: www.gloucesterjournal.com NEW SITE: http://www.gloucestergourmet.blogspot.com
Friend me on twitter too! @glostagourmet
Thanks and Kind Regards 🙂 Melissa Smith Abbott
