Hi, my name is Porter and I am a two-month-old tiger kitten.
I am here at the Cape Ann Animal Aid located the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester.

I have been asked to tell you about an upcoming event.  There will be an in-door yard sale of pet supplies, crafts, puzzles, audio books, jewelry, gifts, luggage, decorations, snow people, household items and more, on Saturday, November 10th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  and Sunday, November 11th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.   $1.00 a bag on Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m.  (some items excluded).  Don’t forget…this sale is at our former downtown location at 260 Main Street, Gloucester.

I have to run – I have to ask one of the volunteers to take me to this sale, I love to shop! Shop! Shop!

WOMEN’S COMMUNITY CLUB of MAGNOLIA HOLIDAY FAIR

A HOLIDAY FAIR sponsored by the Women’s Community Club of Magnolia will be held on Saturday, November, 10th from 9:00 – 2p.m. in Jones Hall at the Magnolia Library Center, corner of Lexington and Norman Ave., Magnolia.

There will be a variety of handmade crafts, holiday gifts, jewelry and bake table.  Also there will be a variety of children’s activities and PICTURES WILL BE TAKEN WITH SANTA!  A silent auction will feature gift certificates from local businesses and restaurants along with gift baskets and a money raffle.

Mulled cider, coffee, punch, muffins and donuts will be served throughout the day.  Lunch, featuring homemade Haddock chowder, quiche, hot dogs,  and tuna rolls will be served from 11:30a.m.

This is the Women’s Club ‘s major fund-raiser of the year and all the proceeds are returned to the community to support organizations and projects that benefit the community as a whole.  PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT THIS COMMUNITY EVENT!

Superstorm Sandy Gloucester ~ The Morning After

Filmed on October 30, 2012, the morning after Superstorm Sandy, at Brace Cove, Gloucester. We were very fortunate to miss the brunt of the storm; Gloucester survived with relatively minimal damage. A heavy, thick steely-gray bank of clouds dominated the sky and the sun broke through for only a brief period. The streaming shafts of sunlight created a beautiful ethereal glow filtering through the atmosphere. The wind was very strong and caused a good deal of camera shake.

Music composed by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Opus 46: Morning Mood.

For our first 2012/13 Berklee in Gloucester show, we didn’t have real tickets — you know the paper kind you buy at box offices and stores.  And people asked why?

Some of you just prefer to buy a real ticket.  You don’t want to go on-line or call and have your credit card charged.  And you don’t want to have your name on a list at the show.  Nope.  You want to walk in, show your ticket and take your seat.  Plain and simple.

Most importantly, you want to save your ticket as a memento.  I’ve got my share of concert and show tickets stashed somewhere.  I figure that when I get old, I’ll sit in my chair by the fire with my glasses on thumbing through these old tickets, reminiscing about this concert and that play — remembering whom I went with; what my life was like back then; how the music sounded.  Ahhh … the good-ol-days — today’s music is crap — that sort of thing.

OK, we got it.  So we printed up some snazzy tickets for this next show: Indie Rock Night featuring Boston’s The Shills with local favorites Renee & Joe at Latitude 43 on November 29 and you can get these tickets in Gloucester at The Liquor Locker @ 287 Main St. and Gloucester Music @ 210 Main Street.

These are nice, big, full color tickets with a photo of The Shills and that wicked-cool drawing of Renee & Joe.  You’ll be proud to add this one to your collection.  So hurry out and get yours soon before they’re all gone.  Or if you just want to order on-line click here.  Which ever way you buy them,  a portion of proceeds benefits the Berklee2Gloucester Scholarship fund — and remember: this is an ALL AGES show and it will ROCK!  Here’s a taste of what you can expect.

Hey Joey–I was inspired to add this post after seeing your George’s Coffee Shop burger this morning. My son loves to cook burgers (and eat them as much as you do.) This was Monday night’s dinner after my very long planting day at Willowdale. He was bummed because he forgot to add cheese–but I wasn’t–still fabulous, and fabulously delicious crispy homemade onion rings, too!

FREE Community Concerts @ Rockport Music

By now you’ve been to the Rockport Music’s spectacular, world-class venue, Shalin Liu Performance Center, right?  Just in case you haven’t yet been there, here’s your chance to go for free.  Check out their community concerts, below!

On Thursday, November 15 at 7 pm, “Master Drummer” and Professor-at-Large at the University of Vermont Sowah Mensah performs music from Ghana and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2000 as a soloist in David Fanshaw’s African Sanctus.  During his stay in Rockport, Mensah will hold numerous workshops on the music and culture of Ghana in the Rockport and Gloucester Schools.  Rockport students have been studying and rehearsing music by Mr. Mensah as well as traditional and contemporary music of Ghana. Rockport student ensembles – Chorus, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and a Drumming Ensemble – will take part in the concert with a finale including a performance by the combined ensembles.  This concert is free and open to the public, no tickets required.

Sunday, November 18 at 3 pm, the Berklee World Strings, directed by cellist Eugene Friesen, features an international collection of Berklee’s most accomplished and promising soloists, chamber players and fiddlers in a lively program that will include new compositions and arrangements from a wide variety of the world’s music. With a repertoire drawn from Celtic, bluegrass, South American, Arabic, Gypsy, jazz, and classical styles, Berklee World Strings redefines the traditional string orchestra with bright melodies, dance rhythms, improvisation and sparkling interplay.  Performing a contemporary program including Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho—A Narrative for String Orchestra, Bruce Thomas’ East River Mountain Suite, Andy Reiner’s Fiddle Suite for String Orchestra, Friesen’s Maracaibo and Asreon, and much more.  Tickets are $10 Adults/FREE 18 & Under (General Admission).

Experience the Firebird Ensemble’s unique interpretation of A Christmas Carol in a free community concert on Wednesday, December 5, at 7 pm (Please Note: Date has changed from Thursday, December 6).  TheFirebird Ensemble has been described as “ambitious and eclectic” by the New York Times and has earned a reputation as one of the premier new music ensembles in the United States. Known for its virtuosic performances and wide audience appeal, Firebird Ensemble’s musical interpretations are drawn from diverse sources and genres.  This concert is free and open to the public, no tickets required.  (This presentation is also part of an educational residency in which the Firebird will present this unique holiday program to Rockport and Gloucester school students in multiple programs that week.)

On Saturday, December 22, at 7 pm, Rockport Music will host a Holiday Community Sing featuring Rockport High School Madrigal Singers and host Bill Hausman as part of Rockport’s annual Christmas Pageant activities.  Please Note, the date has changed from Saturday, December 15 so it is part of the Town of Rockport Annual Christmas Pageant.  This concert is free and open to the public, no tickets required.

World Origami Days: Star Wars Origami

I promised to post on origami each day of the remaining World Origami Days (until Nov. 11). I’ll try to include a variety of themes and styles, to keep it interesting and informative.  There is a lot more to origami than just birds and paper airplanes! Here’s a small sample of what happens when you mix origami with Star Wars fandom. It’s an origami landspeeder!

I folded this from diagrams in the book by Chris Alexander, which I got as a birthday present from the people who work in our parish offices – my thanks to them all!

There’s actually quite a lot of Star Wars origami out there, ranging from the fairly simple (like many models in this book) to the highly complex, as you can see on the Starwarigami website.

Next up: abstract origami tessellations!
