Hi Joey,
There’s just one more week until the Massachusetts Cultural Council visits downtown Gloucester for their big 4 hour site visit on Thursday, FEBRUARY 21, 2013
We’re hoping your readers will help us reach out to all DOWNTOWN GLOUCESTER residents, businesses, organizations.
Help us Decorate by printing and displaying Art Haven’s custom welcome poster!
Please print out and share this wonderful poster, a unique and custom welcome for MCC, designed by Art Haven, a founding cultural partner. We’re hoping residents, businesses, and organizations throughout the district at street level or above will put it in their window or door for that day. Founding partner, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will disperse it to its members. Thank you GMG for posting. Fred Bodin is also reaching out to his network to encourage printing/posting!
The proposed DGCD footprint very roughly spans from St.Peter’s/the Chamber side over to Gortons, and from City Hall to Maritime Gloucester . This means it includes the Civic jewels, all of Middle, all of Main, all of Harbor Loop, our waterfront, and Rogers until Rose Baker. It’s the same footprint used for decades and that we all know. We’ll be included in a select group that receive designation and will be marketed with 5 others on the North Shore . We will be the first town in the state with two cultural districts! It mirrors the HarborWalk’s, the Chamber of Commerce’s, Discover Gloucester , and Maritime Trail mapsl, etc–everyone’s efforts to maintain the integrity of downtown and historic harbor area. It will likely increase what is already great and working. Our downtown works hard to offer residents, visitors and employees fantastic experiences!
Please contact us with any questions you may have. http://www.cultural district.zapd.net & https://sites.google.com/site/gloucestermadcd/home
The snow clearing crews have done a fantastic job, and have worked practically around the clock. Still, people on Main Street had to get out last Sunday to make their storefronts accessible. They carved narrow pathways along the sidewalk, which were used by people like me who were out for the Chocolate Tour.

The abominable snowman? (Am I the only one who sees a face here?)

Just came across this from 2011
This is terrible.
This Captain made horrible horrible decisions.

The wooden tall ship Bounty set sail toward Hurricane Sandy with an unknown amount of rot in its frame despite warnings from a shipwright that had recently worked on the boat, according to testimony heard Wednesday.
Todd Kosakowski, a project manager at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Maine, said the rot was found when replacing two interior planks the Bounty crew targeted for repair.
He testified on the second day of a Coast Guard hearing in Portsmouth into the Oct. 29 sinking of the Bounty during the hurricane, about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras. The Bounty’s captain, Robin Walbridge, was never found. Another crew member died.
Kosakowski said that while the ship was in the yard in September and October, he informed Walbridge about the framing damage. Walbridge, he said, decided he would have it fixed the next time the Bounty was hauled out.
"I told him I was more than worried about what we found and voiced my concerns a couple of different times," he said.

So we’re in the car on the way to Friendlies last night and Snoop Maddie Mad brings up the subject of Leprechauns. She asks if I ever saw a Leprechaun to which I replied- why yes I had. Just last week in Playa Del Carmen they had this Mexican Midget dressed up like a leprechaun who was paid to corral patrons into the bar.
I was immediately interrupted by someone I may or may not be related to through marriage telling me that I shouldn’t say that word. To which I replied, “When did it become inappropriate to say Leprechaun?”
I was informed that we don’t call Midgets Midgets any longer, they are called “little people” Wait, what?
When did the term Midget become a bad word? Like when we grew up didn’t we always call midgets midgets?
I seriously never knew it was considered a slight to call a midget a midget. Does a midget not know they are a midget any more? Do they look in the mirror and not know they are a midget? Or is it just the word midget recently become taboo or something. If I’ve ever offended a midget in the past by calling them a midget and they considered it a bad term I guess I’d apologize but don’t you think it’s a much more accurate term for a small person that grows old but stays really short?
Calling someone a little person isn’t really all that descriptive is it? For example my Snoop Maddie Mad is a little person but she’s not a midget (at least not that I can tell yet). So that “little people” description is far less descriptive than the word midget because there’s no mistaking what you’re talking about when you use the word midget, right?
Is the term Midget off the table nowadays and if so is this a new development?
Little Person vs Midget What Do You Think?
Hi Joey –
Hope you are well and fared well during the storm! I wanted to share a few photos I took the day after the storm at Good Harbor Beach. It was so sad to see the bridge in ruins and I was astounded to see how high the tide was. Despite the damage that had been done, Good Harbor Beach was still as beautiful as ever…
Many thanks!
Best,
Melissa Nicastro
Hi Joey! I am forwarding four pictures that I took on my hike at Ravenswood with my dog this morning at sunrise. I am not very good at this so you might have to turn a couple around if you think they are worthy of sharing. Have a great day! Carol Morello

On March 3, 2013, we will be joining over 85 clubs across New England hosting the American Cancer Society’s 9th annual Pedal to End Cancer event. In the last eight years, Pedal to End Cancer has raised over $2.2 million to benefit the American Cancer Society’s programs of cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
I hope that you will support our effort with a donation – making a financial contribution, or an in-kind donation of a product or service that we can either use in our raffle, award to one of our top fundraisers, or simply distribute to all of our participants.
Approximately 60 people are registered to participate at our club location. Every participant has his/her own reason for joining us as we pedal towards a world with more birthdays. Some have watched a love one battle the disease, while others have struggled with it themselves. Whatever their reason for participating, each is working to raise funds for a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
We want to show our support to those who work tirelessly to raise the funds that are vital to a mission that is important to all of us. The American Cancer Society is fighting to save more birthdays but they can’t do it alone. I do hope you’ll consider sponsoring our event and helping us in the fight against cancer!
Sincerely,
Lindsay Mzaouakk

February 14, 2013 is 1 Billion Day nationally. At the Cape Ann Savings Bank today, Thursday, there was a rally for Domestic Violence Prevention. Please see link below and a couple of pictures.
Temple Ahavat Achim (86 Middle St. in Gloucester, MA) continues to bring back its popular coffeehouse to sell out audiences, Café Shalom, on Saturday, March 2nd, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM, with an evening of contemporary acoustic music.
Café Shalom will serve hot beverages and snacks. All are welcome; there is no dress or age requirement and families are welcome. Refreshments will be available. Admission is $10 at the door, doors open at 6:30 PM.
The featured performer will be recording artist Fly Amero. Left-handed, upside-down guitarist/singer/journeyman Dennis “Fly” Amero finds his musical roots deep within the vast genres of the ’60’s pop revolution. Fly moved to New York City, joining in on musical projects with members of the pop/rock bands, Foreigner and Meatloaf. In the early 1980’s, Fly struck upon the start of what would become a lifelong friendship with the classic pop singer, Larry Hoppen of “Orleans”. He joined, toured and recorded with the famed group for the better part of 3 years before returning Gloucester to focus on his own writing. His remarkable versatility led to the writing and co-producing of Atlantic’s holiday comedy album classic, Twisted Christmas, which quickly became certified gold in 1995. Fly is currently touring as a member of “Orleans” and fronts the thrilling rock/blues act known as “The Big Strum”.
The opening performer will be Bob Kramer with Al Foucault on bass.
The duo plays a blend of acoustic rock/blues/jazz creating ‘rootsy, rockin’ & blue’ sound that echoes from the Delta to the urban landscape with its unique arrangement of cover songs and original songs. Bob and Al have opened for The Pete Best Band (original Beatles drummer), recording blues artists Paul Rishell and Annie Raines and host the open mic at the Grog in Newburyport. Bob has produced two CDs, a solo CD, Honorable mention in the Billboard Songwriting Contest and has performed at the Terra Blues Club in the Village in New York City.
This Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9am-3pm (Sorry no earlybirds) I’ll be having a huge indoor garage sale.
17 Kondelin Rd. #7 Gloucester, MA (In the Cape Ann Industrial Park off of Magnolia Ave. Map at bottom of page)
The sale will feature thousands of fresh items that are ready to sell. I’ve been buying all winter for these sales and my auctions. This sale will feature thousands of items including antiques, collectibles, jewelry, stamps, books, glassware, china, pottery and who knows what else!
As always, nothing is marked in advance, and I try to make sure all the people that attend go home with great buys which they can re-sell at a profit if they’re dealers.
Stop by you’ll see why our sales at 17 Kondelin Rd. Site #7 are the best garage sales around!
This is what the place looks like at 11:30 am Thurs. morning! Prepare to dig in boxes, I don’t think I’ll have the time to make it resemble a Macy’s display by Saturday morning!
