Fisk open house last week

A week ago, C. B. Fisk had an open house and demo of an organ they recently finished and are shipping off to it’s destination in Japan.

The open house was well frequented, with lots of local people coming and going, munching on the tasty tidbits that were being offered and taking tours of the facility.  Organ students and other people from the organ’s destination in Japan were on site as well, some playing the organ and others strolling through the workshop.  I planned on getting lots of photos, but ended up in several engrossing conversations instead…  I got a few more photos of the workshop last year when I got a fascinating tour from my friend Rick Isaacs.  I continue to be amazed by the versatility and skill of the artisans at Fisk!

Statues & Plaques of Gloucester From Peter Dorsey – Chester Grant Stone

Joey,

In my travels around Gloucester there is one memorial stone that I do NOT recommend that anyone try to visit or to even look at closely. The best place to see this stone marker is right here on Good Morning Gloucester.

The reason for this is because the marker in question is located at the outside edge of inside of the first traffic circle you come to on Rte. 128 when you come into Gloucester; called Grant’s Circle. The only other way to see it is to park in the Friendly’s parking lot, hop over the traffic barrier at the side of the circle, and carefully negotiate on foot through two lines of circling automobile traffic. You could peer out the window of your car as you drive around the circle, BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT EITHER!! The stone marker is a tall dark, possibly slate or polished granite stone with a carved relief portrait of Chester Grant, for whom the circle is named ” This Circle, Erected by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1956, is Dedicated to Honor Chester H. Grant, 1897 -1954, A Soldier and Devoted Citizen”. Chester Grant served in World War I in France from 1917 to 1919. He was, “cited 3 times for Meritorius Conduct Under Fire and Received the Silver Star with Palm.” The silver star, known as the Croix de Guerre or the War Cross is a French Military decoration to honor people who fought bravely with the Allies against the Axis Force during World War I. “As a Public Official for the City of Gloucester – Displayed Great Ability in the Performance of His Municipal Duties.” There is a flag pole behind the stone marker with a light which shines on the flag from the underside at night.

Historic New England Home

When visiting my daughter Kimberly at her home in Adamsville section of Dorchester, noticed almost across the street is the Pierce House.  The Pierce House is a Historic Home of New England just as our beautiful Beauport.

Pierce House is one of the last surviving examples of seventeenth-century architecture in the city of Boston. Lived in by ten generations of one family, the house documents the building practices and tastes of the Pierces over three centuries. At different times, family members expanded and adapted their house to meet demands for space, function, comfort, and privacy.  The history of the Pierce family highlights important aspects of social history, community history, and New England history. It tells the compelling story of a middling New England family over the course of three hundred and fifty years as they worked hard to provide for themselves and their children. The Pierce family took part in both local and national events; during the American Revolution, Colonel Samuel Pierce participated in the fortification of Dorchester Heights.  Architectural viewports and special lighting highlight many of the rare surviving seventeenth-century features. Of particular interest are beautifully chamfered framing members and a nearly complete exterior wall of original riven clapboards that was preserved by the addition of a lean-to.

Gary Backstrom Band with Michael Thomas Doyle on Drums tonight @ Rhumb Line

There’s so much going on tonight (see schedule here) that even if you go out early and stay out late, you won’t be able to catch everything.  I guess you could call that good news for Cape Ann’s music scene.  More good news that Dan King is back in town playing with KBMG tonight at Dog Bar.

It’s also good news is that if you play your cards right, you can get to a lot of shows because they start at 6, 7, 8, 9 and the Gary Backstrom Band at 9:30 at the Rhumb Line.

Dancing to the Gary Backstrom Band would be a perfect way to end an excellent night of music.  Tonight Gary’s got Michael Thomas Doyle on drums.  Hopefully you’ve seen Doyle on guitar with Chelsea Berry (check out this video).  He’s just as good on drums.  See him in the Gary Backstrom Band video below at Harbor Loop last summer.

Oohh, I can’t wait for Harbor Loop concerts to start up again … I once asked Doyle which instrument he likes better.  He replied, “Do you have kids?”
“Yes.”
“Which one do you like best?”

Point taken!
