Boston Marathon Terrorist Attack
Yesterday afternoon we were at the Cincinnati airport returning to Boston when we heard the initial report of the bombings at the marathon finish line. It’s difficult to put into words the anger and sickening feelings one experiences upon seeing a beloved city under attack and especially the marathon event, which brings an international crowd of participants and cheerers-on.
The marathon is cherished by Bostonians and it shines a world-wide spotlight on their beautiful city during the celebration of this oldest of annual marathons. The Boston Marathon is a tremendous source of pride for our state and for our nation. Immediately your heart goes out to the victims and their families. You see featured on the news extraordinary acts of bravery and kindness in people helping people. But then you begin to think about future public events and the larger implications on our freedom-loving society.
Acts of terror, whether domestic or international, are designed to forever imprint fear. We were unable to attend the marathon this year as my widowed sister-in-law remarried over the weekend, but I know where I will be next year.
After both September 11th and the marathon bombings, students at MIT illuminated the Green Building in red, white, and blue.

He’s Baaaaaack . . .
Something’s up in Gloucester. Only 2 weeks ago, Dennis Brennan played The Rhumb Line with Dave Sag (see post about that here).
Tonight he’s back in Gloucester @ Jalapenos with Dave Brown, Wolf Ginandes & Dave Mattacks. Could it be the tremendous musical talent resident in Boston is attracting yet another great musician? That’s what we think. So we’ve selected a series of Dennis Brennan videos to feature on gimmesound. See them here.
You might want to call Jalapenos at 978-283-8228 to reserve a table for tonight. The room is usually full.
Here’s a video of Dennis when he was a bit younger.

Dear Joey,
Here’s a flyer I hope you can post for a panel discussion happening next Sunday (3:15pm) at the National Historical Park in Lowell as part of the Folklife Series. I get to be on the same stage as two men whose work I admire greatly: shipbuilder and National Heritage Fellow Harold Burnham and Erik Ronnberg, Jr. whose ship models can be found in the Smithsonian, Mystic Seaport, and many other museums. We are all going to bring models with us and discuss the similarities and differences in the ways we create and use models in our work. I’ll bring C. B. Fisk’s model of Memorial Church at Harvard and the organ we just built for them. More info at http://blog.massfolkarts.org/blog/index.php/2013/04/model-making-ship-models-pipe-organs/
Thanks for helping to get the word out.

Theatre in the Pines – "Dividing the Estate"
"Dividing the Estate" by Horton Foote and directed by Nan Webber, will be held on May 9, 10, 11 at 7:30 and May 12 at 3 p.m. at Spiran Hall located at the corner of School Street and Broadway, Rockport
In, "Dividing the Estate," old resentments and sibling rivalries surface as the members of this hilariously dysfunctional family go head to head to see who might claim the biggest piece of the pie. Rich humor clearly reflects the spirit of the playwright. Cast members include Scott Hazzard, Kierstin Hazzard, Sarah Clark, Sue Barratt Souza, Rick Doucette, Eileen Fitzgerald, and Mark and Patti Natti, Ruth Exama, Alexa Exama, Patricia Richards and Carl Pulkkinen. Randy Dupps is Stage Manager, Frank Walcott is the technical director and set design and production manager is Martin Ray.
Tickets are now on sale at The Bookstore in Gloucester and Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport.
Flatrocks Gallery welcomes spring with Fabrications, five gifted artists dedicated to ‘transforming the ordinary.’ Though visually distinct, each body of work employs common materials in ways that play fragility against strength and continuity against temporality. Dawn Southworth, combines a vast range of materials and processes. to construct unified, emotionally charged imagery. Margaret Rack, a metal sculptor offers playful wire “drawings”, delicate yet substantial constructions. Deploying commonplace materials with vision and wit, Nina Fletcher recycles histories into new stories. Sculptor and installation artist Caroline Bagenal animates space with delicate linear structures that move us from impermanence into history. Elizabeth Billings’ weavings use organic materials gathered locally to evoke intuitive experiences we all share.
Join us for an reception to meet the artists, April 27th. 6-9pm.
Fabrications runs through May 26th.
Open Thurs.- Sun. 12-5pm.(and by appt.)

DOCUMERICA Project Photo Set Rockport In The 70s
Hi:
Love your blog. I follow it as a Cape Ann native currently living in Dorchester.
Not sure if you’d be interested, but there’s an incredible set of photos from the 70s taken for the DOCUMERICA Project and currently housed in the U.S. Archives. They are primarily of Rockport, but they are really cool.
Check them out here:
