A former IBM programmer, Rosen is one of today’s elite cruciverbalists and has constructed crossword puzzles for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other newspapers. His puzzles have appeared in many anthologies and are famous for their understated wit. He is now freelance and much in demand. He wrote The Random House Puzzle Maker’s Handbook, helping to raise public awareness of his arcane profession. An amateur jazz keyboardist, he plays weekly at a restaurant near his Naples, Florida home.

HOT HOMEMADE PIZZA TIP!!!

Back in September I posted about a trip to visit my daughter in Brooklyn, and the extraordinary pizza place that she loves to go to, Roberta’s. Recently, the New York Times’s Sam Sifton wrote an article all about Roberta’s fabulous pizza titled “A Little Pizza Homework!!” 

Whether you are a lover of thin crust or thick crust pizza, I urge you give this recipe a whirl. Even though we don’t have a fancy wood-fired oven, the Margherita pizza was out-of-this-world delicious. On a good night, Robertas makes 25oo pizzas, and it’s no wonder when Roberta’s pizza czar Anthony Falco, thinks of the dough as his “baby.”

Sam Sifton writes, “Watching Mr. Falco encourage a mound of dough to become a pizza is entrancing. He starts with his fingertips, spreading the dough out from its center, gently, on a well-floured surface.

“It’s a living thing,” he said of the dough. “It’s your baby. You don’t want to beat it up.” He pushed down gently around the pie’s perimeter, creating the edge. He picked up the dough and lightly passed it back and forth between his palms, rotating it each time, using gravity to help it stretch. The top remained the top. The bottom remained the bottom. At approximately 12 inches in diameter, Mr. Falco called it ready to go. He slid the round back and forth on the floured surface to make sure it didn’t stick. “That is certified for topping,” he said.”

Another Reported Turkey Attack On Eastern Point

Sista Felicia~ He was originally walking with 4 other turkeys on field of grass when we first noticed them on our way to the breakwater for a walk.  As we drove past the field leaving Eastern Point, the aggressive Turkey left his friends in the grassy field and attacked our truck.  It was a crazy scene, one like you see on TV.  with hidden camera crews filming undercover.  I didn’t want to hurt the bird, but every time I tried to drive away it chased and pecked the sides of the truck and its tires.  When we  finally managed to drive away from the aggressive turkey he chased us from behind…It was an experience we will be talking about for awhile….so many laughs!

 

Our First Stealth Warship

On April 12th, 2014, the 610 foot long US Navy Destroyer Zumwalt was christened at the Bath Iron Works in Maine. My friend Bob Rubin of Rocky Neck (https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2013/01/01/tradition-on-rocky-neck/) attended the celebration with his camera. The ship's namesake is the late Admiral Elmo 'Bud' Zumwalt, Chief of Naval Operations from 1970 to 1974. USS Zumwalt is the stealthiest and most technologically advanced ship in the world.

Hi Everyone,

Happy Spring!

Our next Cape Ann Painter and Photographer Group will meet on Friday, May 2,  from 9-10:30 AM at Cape Ann Giclee on 20 Maplewood Avenue in Gloucester. Parking is on the far right of Shaw’s Market.

James Eves , who owns Cape Ann Giclee with his wife Anna, will demonstrate Studio Photography and Lighting. It should be a very interesting program.
Thank you James and Anna for this upcoming program and for offering your space for our meetings!

We will also be discussing ideas for future programs and social events.

The group was founded almost three years ago with the aim to give Cape Ann Artists and Photographers an opportunity to meet each other, offer support, share ideas and ongoing work, and have a good time.

Hello Joey, thanks so much for helping me spread the word about Sidewalk Sweeping Day and Earth Day. I did forget to mention my wonderful friend Patty Philbrick’s business Two Sisters that also donates to our Earth Day cleanup donating fruits and veggies every year. Also the city does get out and spruce up the beaches before Memorial Day, sorry didn’t know this. CULTURAL FACILITIES FUND SUPPORTS REPAIRS AT GLOUCESTER’S SARGENT HOUSE MUSEUM

MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Cultural Council have provided a $20,875 Cultural Facilities Fund grant to the Sargent Murray Gilman Hough House Association Inc., which operates the Sargent House Museum in Gloucester. The Museum is using grant funds to repair the building’s structure, including replacing beams; repointing and repairing foundation and chimney masonry; replacing a structural pier; and rebuilding basement windows.

“The Sargent House showcases the Revolutionary War history of Gloucester and the values of the new republic.” said MassDevelopment President and CEO Marty Jones. “We are pleased to provide this grant to help to preserve Cape Ann’s rich cultural history.”

The Sargent House Museum, at 49 Middle Street in Gloucester, was built in 1782 for Judith Sargent Stevens Murray (1751-1820), a philosopher, writer, and early advocate of women’s equality. For more than 100 years, the Sargent House was home to sea merchants, patriots, and community leaders. Today, the Museum tells the story of Judith Sargent Murray, and her husbands, sea Captain John Stevens and the Rev. John Murray, founder of Universalism in America. Museum visitors can view a collection of original works by the great portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), Judith’s great-great nephew. The Museum collections include Robert Sheraton furniture, a small but exquisite number of decorative arts and paintings, and major pieces of other American furniture from centers like Boston, Salem, and New Orleans. 

“We are thrilled that MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Cultural Council awarded this substantial grant that will ensure the long-term preservation of this iconic Gloucester building that continues to provide meaning to local residents today,” said Daniel Sargent Weir, President of the Sargent Murray Gilman Hough House Association.

MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Cultural Council administer the Cultural Facilities Fund, an initiative of the Commonwealth to increase public and private investment in cultural facilities throughout the state. Created by the Massachusetts Legislature in 2006, the Fund offers capital, feasibility, technical assistance, and systems replacement grants for eligible nonprofits engaged in the arts, humanities, or interpretive sciences. The Fund has awarded more than $55 million in grants to cultural organizations across Massachusetts. For more information, visit the MassDevelopment and Massachusetts Cultural Council websites.

MassDevelopment, the state’s finance and development agency, works with businesses, nonprofits, financial institutions, and communities to stimulate economic growth across the Commonwealth. During FY2013, MassDevelopment financed or managed 350 projects generating investment of more than $2.4 billion in the Massachusetts economy. These projects are projected to create more than 7,000 jobs and build or rehabilitate 800 residential units.

Due to Inclement Weather Predicted: Friends of the HarborWalk Garden Cleanup is Postponed Until Sunday Morning at 9am

What a challenge to try to schedule HarborWalk cleanups during the month of April! There’s just one more border along I4-C2, thanks to all our super awesome volunteers, and most gratefully to Lise Breen, who very kindly and all by herself last weekend cleaned up the other half of I4-C2. I will be there Sunday morning at 9am, unless it is raining buckets! Everyone is invited, you don’t have to be a gardener to lend a hand, and we will have extra hand tools and lawn and leaf bags. We hope to see you there!

The Women’s Fund of Essex County to host “Power of the Purse”

Essex County, MA—April, 2014 – The Women’s Fund of Essex County will host its sixth annual “Power of the Purse” fundraising event. Inspired by the Victor Hugo saying, “As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled,” this signature event includes a ladies’ evening of fabulous hors d’oeuvres and wine, together with a raffle featuring chances to win distinctive purses and bags donated by renowned designers and retailers. The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, May 1st, 2014, from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. at our new venue: Willowdale Estate in Bradley Palmer State Park, 24 Asbury Street, Topsfield. Proceeds help fund special projects and annual grant awards made by The Women’s Fund.

The Women’s Fund of Essex County was founded in 2003 to promote philanthropy and to raise and distribute funds to organizations that provide opportunities and solutions for women and girls in need throughout Essex County.

To date, The Fund has awarded over $825,000 in grants to Essex County nonprofit organizations. The Women’s Fund is a field of interest fund of Essex County Community Foundation located in Danvers, MA.

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week Kathy continues with part two of the documentary on Felicia Oil’s family business. John Nicastro (son of Sam Nicastro) now manages the fuel dock. The first picture shows him capturing the flag on the greasy pole at Fiesta in 1955. The second is a shot taken in 2009 at the National Marine Fisheries (pictured left to right): John Nicastro, Nick Sanfilippo and Frank Cattone. The next two are photographs of the dock today and a video interview ends this series.

Mixed Bean Salad with Vinaigrette Dressing

Still using up Easter leftover ingredients!  Last night I was thrilled to find a handful of fresh string beans leftover from Easter, when I learned that a vegetarian friend of my son would be staying for dinner.  I scanned the pantry, and  refrigerator, for ideas, and began chopping, grating, straining, and washing, fresh herbs, feta cheese, garlic, red onion, and beans.  After tossing it all together, I whipped up a simple vinaigrette and a delicious meal even non vegetarians would enjoy was created and on the table in less then ten minutes.  Today I sent my husband Barry to work with a container of this healthy hearty and delicious Mixed Bean Salad  to enjoy for lunch.
