EarlyAct™ is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 13. It is sponsored by one of the local Rotary clubs in the township in which the school is located. The mission and operation of EarlyAct™ are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Interact.
EarlyAct™ provides young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others.
EarlyAct™ also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit
their school, local and global communities.

Bird Bath Gray Catbird ©Kim Smith 2014Click image to view larger

The day we planted blueberry bushes is the very same day the catbirds began to call our garden home. We now see Gray Catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) throughout the seasons, devouring the seeds and fruit of holly, crabapple, winterberry, magnolia, blueberry, and shad. Their cat-like cries, which lends the species their common name, are welcome and often heard. Gray Catbirds are in the Mimidae Family and, like their relatives the Mockingbirds, also mimic the songs of other birds.

Although I have read that catbirds are shy, they seem relatively sociable in our garden and aren’t threatened by the presence of people within close proximity. We keep the bird baths filled with fresh clean water and I especially love to watch the catbirds from our kitchen window as they are so exuberant in their bathing habits–diving and splashing and then drying their wings at the edge of the basin. Oh Joyous Spring!

Island in the Annisquam: Merchants

Three investors bought Merchants (or Pearce) island about 1890: Edward Samuel Page, Mr. Kitchen, and another investor. They had trouble selling lots because of fresh water issues. This photo shows Merchants Island from Riverview, with the pier and float in the foreground, enabling the only access to the island. A handful of cottages still stand on Merchants, used in the summer only.

Here's a cottage on Merchant’s Island about 1900, with a moored dory with fish traps. A few hardy summer residents of Merchants have visited the gallery. I noticed they frequently looked outside at the weather. That's understandable - it's a long row home.

Sunday June 22nd is International Sun Day, and, weather permitting, the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club  will be celebrating  in downtown Gloucester, by the Fisherman statue, from 5:00 pm until 9:00. There will be safe solar observing glasses for the public, handouts and activities for the kids, and a number of different specially filtered solar telescopes, to take some good long looks at our nearest star.

How is our sun like a pot of boiling spaghetti? What is space weather and why should we care?  We’ll find out! We’ll see giant solar prominences live, as they happen, and sunspots big enough to swallow the earth as they make their way around the sun’s surface.   When it starts to get dark we’ll take a look at the planet Saturn, giant Jupiter and beautiful star clusters and nebulae.

Come join us on the Boulevard for International Sun Day Sunday as we explore the universe around us, both near and far.

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community Center in Gloucester. More information is available on their website at at http://gaac.us or their facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage. You can also follow them on twitter, @gaactweet.
