Fish on Fridays
The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.
Kathy and Marty had a brief but pleasant visit with Peter Mullen, owner of the 165 foot midwater trawler-seiner Western Venture and the 109 foot Osprey.
The boats fish for herring and mackerel, often on Georges Bank, and market their catch locally and in Boston for bait and overseas (Mediterranean countries and Africa) for human consumption.

This is a very exciting exhibit, which you owe it to yourself to see.  I was totally blown away and inspired by it.  Stop by the Center Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4:00 pm, through June 1.  The program at Cape Ann Community Cinema on May 25th also promises to be quite exciting, when you will be able to see the animations created by these very talented digital artists that the exhibited digital art was derived from.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is pleased to announce the 12th in a monthly series called Music & Meditation in the Meetinghouse (MMM) that offers Cape Ann residents and visitors a unique combination of beautiful music and relaxing meditation. Each event offers the participants an opportunity to enjoy a different combination of peaceful self-awareness through various kinds of meditation enhanced by the musical offerings.
The MMM experience is intended to be comforting, entertaining and spiritual but it is not a church service and there is no religious content. It is held in the candle-lit sanctuary of the grand 1806 Meetinghouse, a place of gathering and welcoming for the entire Gloucester community for more than 200 years.  The Meetinghouse, whose lofty tower lantern has guided generations of mariners safely into our harbor, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest and largest surviving building of its type in Gloucester.
The May MMM event features meditation leader Paula Passanisi and traditional Celtic harpist Moira Kelly. There will be a collation with light refreshments afterwards in the Entrance House, giving participants the opportunity to meet the leaders and each other in a convivial atmosphere.
The Sanctuary is accessible with facilities for persons with disabilities via the side entrance at 10 Church Street. A free-will offering is requested but everyone is welcome regardless of financial capability. Find your way to the green at the corner of Middle and Church Streets and discover an hour of peace, enjoyment and contemplation in Gloucester’s Meetinghouse.
MEDITATION LEADER, PAULA PASSANISI, Yoga Joy, Gloucester:
As Gloucester’s Yoga Joy’s Studio Owner and a Forrest Yoga Instructor, Paula employs many tools, combining her practice of mindful movement with nine years of professional dance training and her clinical research studies in social work.  She has an acute awareness of body alignment and breath control, integrating Yoga discipline with her work as a psychotherapist. Themes in Paula’s classes often remind students of their own wisdom, awesomeness, and confidence.
MUSICIAN, MOIRA KELLY, Traditional Celtic Harpist:
Moira is a Celtic singer, harpist and rhythm guitarist, originally from the Connecticut coast. She has been playing, teaching and giving harp workshops in the USA from Florida to the NYC metro area, and internationally from Ireland’s green countryside to the sunny coast of Melbourne, Australia. She brings the magic of traditional Celtic harp music to the Boston area and the North shore, where she resides in Gloucester.

The band will be featuring Ms. Brittany Betts on trumpet and Dana Cohen on trombone. Your going to love all the new brass driving songs these musicians bring to the Garfish classic rock-n-roll sound. Also on stage will be fellow musicians Jeff Worthley on saxophone, keyboards and guitar, Kevin Lopes on lead vocals, Walter Piscitello on drums, Doug Comeau on guitar and Gary Hiltz on bass.

Sista’s Favorite Kitchen Gadget Of The Week!
Mother natures’ unpredictable climate this time of year makes espresso lovers official decision to switch from enjoying a daily hot espresso, to enjoying an iced espresso a big challenge. This weeks favorite kitchen gadget is my Keurig CafĂ© One-Touch Milk Frother. This handy little gadget has made my transition from hot espresso to iced espresso a lot easier to drink.  I have found that a warm frothy dollop of milk floating on top of my iced espresso is a heavenly in between beverage. I know I’m breaking all the rules by adding warm frothy milk to an Iced beverage, and it really defeats the whole concept of drinking an “iced beverage”, but this combination is perfect on a day like today when the temperature outside is neither hot or cold enough to commit one way or the other! Coffee connoisseurs will definitely disagree, but it’s working for me, and I highly recommend trying it!Â

Light Up Mattos!
The Mattos Field Committee consists of Jerry Goulart, Patty Philbrick, Kelly Brancaleone, Denise Goulart, Michael Muise and myself. We have been meeting for about 4 months towards a goal of new lights and the rehabilitation of Mattos Field. You can contact us at LightUpMattos@gmail.com and like our Facebook page Light Up Mattos. When we have finished our goal of the new lights we would like to rededicate Mattos Field again and perhaps have a Joseph S. Mattos Jr. day to celebrate. Another story I left out was the story of Capt. Joseph S. Santos the nephew to Joseph S. Mattos Jr. I met him on the Gloucester Daily Times when I spelled Mattos wrong when responding to an article. Mr. Santos lived in Florida and when he came home he met me at the field and we talked and talked about the neighborhood and I took pictures of him at the memorial to his uncle. I talked to him about all the work that is going to be done and he was very happy and looked forward to cutting the ribbon when we rededicated the field. Sadly Mr. Santos passed away last July. I am in contact with his wife Alice and now she is looking forward to cutting the ribbon for the rededication. So I thank you for getting the word out and lets “Light Up Mattos”.

Red Shed Film Festival Highlights
Red Shed Film Festival Organizers Michael Kelly, Henry Cooper, and Sarah Kelly
The Red Shed Film Festival had a tremendous turnout Saturday night. Festival organizers Henry Cooper, Michael Kelly, and Phil Hopkins were there hosting the screenings, and did a fabulous job running the event. I had a wonderful time and plan to participate again next year. Dining al fresco under the cherry trees on Wally’s Bistrot’s super delicious barbeque and Twin Lights soda just added to the fun.

For the next few nights, I’ll post several of my favorite films screened at the festival. Some may have played previously on Good Morning Gloucester, but would be worth seeing again. I hope you enjoy them as much as did I!

Gloucester MA—Rocky Neck’s newly designated Cultural District and its ocean bound environs provides the scenic backdrop for the first ever Rocky Neck 5K on Sunday, June 8 at 10:00 AM. The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) and The Studio Restaurant are hosting the 3.1 mile run//walk and celebratory lunch for race participants to raise money to support RNAC’s new Cultural Center at Rocky Neck. Racers will proceed from the Causeway on Rocky Neck, along Eastern Point Road to Grapevine Road and Lands End Lane. They will return from Gloucester’s Atlantic Road Back Shore via Farrington Avenue to the finish line in front of The Studio Restaurant at 53 Rocky Neck Avenue. Along with the free buffet lunch, post-race festivities for participants includes an awards ceremony to recognize top male and female finishers in each age category. The names of the overall top male and female 2014 finishers will be inscribed on a wall plaque in The Studio Restaurant that will remain on display to honor Rocky Neck 5K winners each year.

Online registration and information about the race, the race course and race parking are available at www.rockyneck5k.com. Register now for$25.00 or $35.00 after May 31. Registration forms and information can also be picked up in advance of race day at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA 01930, Thursday–Sunday, 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM and, during operating hours, at The Studio and The Rudder Restaurants on Rocky Neck Avenue in Gloucester. Early registrants (before May 31) receive free Rocky Neck 5K t-shirts. Chip timing from North Shore Timing is available for $2.00 per entry. Top male and female finishers in each of the following age categories will be awarded medals: 12 and under, 13–19, 20–35, 36–59, 60 and older.  Parking is free to race participants at the public lot on Rocky Neck Causeway, at the former Bickford’s Boat Yard lot at 31 Rocky Neck Avenue, at the Gloucester Marine Railways lot, 81 Rocky Neck Avenue and in the private lot at 20 Wonson Street—all on Rocky Neck in Gloucester. In addition, there will is auxiliary free parking in downtown Gloucester with water taxi service to Rocky Neck provided by Gloucester Harbor Water Shuttle for $5.00 per passenger.

525 MARKS ITS OPENING
WITH A NEIGHBORHOOD BASH!
The Restaurant Invites the Surrounding Community to an Afternoon of Music, Food and Fun – Right on Magnolia’s Lexington Avenue
Who:  525, a new restaurant anchoring the revitalization of Magnolia’s Lexington Avenue. 525 is a neighborhood restaurant that serves creative comfort food and locally inspired cocktails. The space’s chic ambiance makes guests feel at home, with an oversized bar ideal for connecting with friends old and new. 525 also boasts outdoor seating, making it the perfect après beach destination this summer.
What:  A neighborhood party! 525 will celebrate its birthday every year on 5/25, and this Sunday’s event marks the first annual bash to commemorate the occasion. The restaurant has “taken over” its neighboring sidewalk to set the stage for the party.
There will be live music from the area’s own John Rockwell, face painting and activities for the kids, as well as samples from the restaurant’s new menu.
