Interview: “

Annie Fathergill, an artist from Marblehead, recently stopped by John’s Farm Stand to pick up some local produce. To her surprise, she received a tutorial on tomatoes. Kusulas took her over to a section of his stand and pointed. “This is what you call an Heirloom tomato. Do you know what an Heirloom tomato is?” he asked. When Fathergill admitted she didn’t, Kusulas explained. “Heirloom tomatoes are the original tomatoes, the way they used to be. Ugly as sin, but when man took over, they made it nice and pretty but they took away the taste,” he laughed.

He also treats many of his first time customers to raw corn. “When they tell me they’ve never had raw corn, I have ’em tasting uncooked corn. I just peel it open and I let them taste it and they can’t believe how sweet the corn is,” he said.

“You have to lean over and smell his fresh peaches before you buy one, and a taste is even better. Kusulas also has an answer for you if you can’t decide. “I have a little knife in my pocket. I take it out and I cut a piece and let the people taste it, and they realize once they taste it, they like it and so they buy it,” he said.

Kusulas is 72, and now retired. He left Greece at the age of 12, and spent most of his life in New York City. He worked in nightclubs as Maitre-D, and fondly remembers customers like Harry Belafonte and Anthony Quinn.

At other times in his life he owned a restaurant, a factory, and even once owned a donut shop. He says he loves this latest endeavor. “Instead of sitting home and nagging my wife, or my wife nagging me, I’m down at the farm stand and having a good time with the public,” he joked.

At his counter, he invariably has a greeting for his customers. “I always say how many, and they look at me like am I crazy or not, and I say, how many pies, I’m talking about pies,” he chuckled. John Kusulas is also known locally as the Pie Guy. He sells 14 varieties, everything from Apple to Lemon to Pecan and Pumpkin Pie.”

While his stand is stocked with summer fruits and vegetables, there is one sign that fall is coming. The first local apples are now on display, too.

Hi Joey,

Hope all is well with you. It’s been ages since we’ve connected. Thanks for promoting the Seafood Throwdown on GMG.

We have our first ever benefit event coming up on November 7th. We’re calling it Rock the Boat! It’ll be at the Armory in Somerville and feature Chelsea Berry and a Bob Marley tribute Band, Hope Road (whose lead singer is a commercial fisherman we work with).

I’ve attached the flyer for the event, and here’s the link to the ticket site http://www.eventbrite.com/e/namas-rock-the-boat-tickets-12653722625. The silent auction items are listed on the ticket page, too.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH GRIEF

An evening presentation at Wisdom’s Heart

2 Duncan St. Gloucester

Friday, October 17
7:30-9:30pm

Being humans, we are regularly experiencing loss. The grief that arrives with the death of a loved one can render us helpless and hopeless. And yet there is an opportunity for transformation in this situation as well as great challenge. The evening will include a brief talk by the speaker, followed by a brilliantly tender film. There will be time for meditation, stillness, and discussion. Everyone is welcome.

SPEAKER/PRESNTER: Anita Pandolfe Ruchman has been studying meditation since the 1970s. She began Buddhist studies with Lama Marut in 2007 and continues advanced Buddhist studies with Lindsay Crouse and Rick Blue. Anita has been a healing arts practitioner for 40 years and has served thousands of people in her roles as a psychotherapist, RN, childbirth educator, midwife and massage therapist. Since the untimely death of her daughter Nora in 2010, Anita has specialized in grief counseling and healing-from-loss retreats.

Question for Paul M: Do you think the pale pink in the sky is a faint glimpse of the Lunar Eclipse?

Niles Beach sunrise ©Kim Smith 2014Click to view larger

I went looking for the eclipse this morning Paul M. It was way too overcast (as you predicted), but the colors of the sky over Eastern Point, facing west, were very unusual, for sunrise. The panorama was taken at Niles Beach, in the direction towards where the setting moon would be, at around 7:15 this morning. Do you think the bright light and pinkish color in the sky is a reflection from the setting Blood Moon?

Going Bananas for Pumpkin!

After listening to the latest GMG podcast I couldn’t help but laugh, noticing all the “Pumpkin in Everything” lining the grocery store shelves.

These chips are for Joey, cause we all know he loves pumpkin!

I gave the chips a whirl, even though I’m not a big fan of pumpkin. Although I do adore pumpkin seeds slow roasted in butter, olive oil, and salt. And homemade pumpkin-filled ravioli, and pumpkin pies, but definitely not pumpkin pie soda. You may like the chips, if you like a very sugary-tasting chip but for me, the sweet flavor was too much of an unwelcome aberration.

Sends us your “Pumpkin in Everything” photos and we’ll post them here! Email to kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com

Pick of The week- taste Of Cape ann Tomorrow Night at Cruiseport!

The Taste of Cape Ann Returns to Cruiseport Gloucester on October 9th

Save-The-Date-Card-1.gif

The most delicious fundraiser of the year is nearly here – it’s time to get your ticket. Last year’s event included nearly three dozen food and beverage purveyors and nearly 300 guests!

The Cape Ann YMCA’s 6th Annual “Taste of Cape Ann” returns to Cruiseport Gloucester  on Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 6-9PM. The event features the best of Cape Ann eateries offering food, wine and spirits for one $25 ticket price with the proceeds of ticket sales going to support Cape Ann YMCA Teen Service Trips to New Orleans, Navajo Nation and Nicaragua.

The service trips empower local youth to spend a week working in communities hit by environmental and economic devastation.  Teens participate in learning modules before and after traveling on school break to offer hands-on aid in areas of great need.  The New Orleans Mission, now in its 4th year, originated as a Cape Ann trip but has generated enough interest to cause its expansion to include youth throughout the North Shore YMCA system two years ago and prompted the addition of the Nicaragua trip in 2013, and the Navajo Nation trip in 2014.

Columbus Day Weekend is the final open weekend for the galleries at Madfish Wharf. If you haven’t had a chance to come by and visit this season, this will be your last chance. If you haven’t experienced Regina Piantedosi’s YUPO Gallery and her amazing non representational mixed media paintings, you really should, and if you prefer paintings of things you recognize, don’t miss her magical new series of “Obligatory Boat” paintings. Sue Handman has come up with a wonderful lightweight plaid wool scarf with her trademark vintage fabric collage and clever sayings that are just adorable. Thanks for the Learning Op, Dave Moore!

If you listened to the most recent podcast or read Marty Luster’s post entitled, “Thank You, Dave” then you already know that we were all so happy to receive some postcards, maps, and currency from one of the most faithful and kind FOBs we have…Dave Moore!

Sunday’s Podcast

Marty’s “Thank You, Dave!”

After other contributors took their share of Dave’s gifts, I was lucky enough to secure the rest to bring to my students.  On Monday morning I shared the items with my class.  We admired the gorgeous postcards and were struck by their beauty, we learned a bit about the Won and its worth in comparison to our American dollars, and we studied the tourism maps to learn more about daily life in South Korea.  Dave’s gifts gave me the opportunity to share some maps of Asia with the class, to discuss time zones, and to, of course, revisit how to write “Thank You” notes.

David’s gifts are now on the shelf in our large geography area and many students have sat independently and looked through the cards…several had fun sorting them by natural landscapes, architecture, food, etc.  They have also tried to recreate the scenes found on the Won.

My students were incredibly grateful that someone so far away would think to share items with them and are making the most of the learning opportunity.

Some of you have asked to see some of the postcards so I took the liberty of photographing several….along with some of Dave’s other gifts and the classroom materials that we are now using along with them.

One act of kindness can go a long way.  So, that having been said, Thank You again to Dave and Kim Moore!

Fred Bodin gives the Kodiak Bear Family sculpture a “bear hug” during a special preview on the grounds of the Chris Williams sculpture studio in Essex, MA. I am 6’1″ tall, and males of this species of bear grow to over 10′ tall when standing on their hind legs. The tree the bear family is climbing is 17′ high. The Kodiak bear is to scale! Kodiak, or brown bears, are named after an island of the same name in Alaska.
