Amaryllis Lemon Lime

I’ve never met an amaryllis I didn’t love and ‘Lemon Lime’ is no exception. The flowers are slightly smaller than many cultivars, compared to that of ‘Orange Sovereign’ for example, however, the plant often sends up two and three stalks at the same time. The exquisite pale chartreuse complements nearly every color scheme imaginable and is wonderfully fresh and spring-like to help stave away those dreary drab winter-hued blues.

Easter Island Video

Here is the first video of our recent adventure in South America. The trip was run by Overseas Adventure Travel (Boston).

After flying from Boston to Miami to Santiago, we hopped 2.300 miles over the Pacific to Easter Island. Best known for its massive sculpted heads (moai) created between 1200 AD and 1600 AD, the island is an enchanting place. It is heaven for archaeologists, anthropologists and geologists.

Artist at Work: No Rest for the Weary

I met a friend for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks at Stone’s last night and headed back out into the cold to head home at 9:30.  The chill was just leaving my car as I turned off of Broadway and onto South Street in Rockport to climb the hill towards home.

There, on the side walk, was an artist at work.  My clock read 9:42 and my temperature gauge read a mere 36 degrees, but he was happily painting away.

I drove past him and hemmed and hawed a bit about whether to continue towards home or turn around and capture the moment…with no camera, but at least, my phone.  I saw him painting on that same corner last week and was mad at myself for not stopping.  I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice.

I’m glad I turned around.

Chris Coyne, of Coyne Fine Art, was in the midst of an already gorgeous painting…surely to be all that more stunning upon completion.  This evening he was painting The First Baptist Church of Rockport. Last week he was painting one of my favorite things about the holiday season, the Dock Square Christmas Tree. He was kind enough to show me the completed painting of our beautiful town tree. Nothing short of stunning!

I’ve always had an appreciation for Chris Coyne’s art, but after seeing him out in the cold late at night to capture the perfect moment in time…I have an entirely new appreciation.

New Year’s Eve for Fred

For the past several years, I celebrated the New Year quietly, usually with dinner at home and early to bed. And that’s what I like now. We’ll be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Insider Tip: If you like to buy wine at the Cave, do it now. They have great wine at reasonable prices, and you can score some cheese while you’re there. Their seasonal retail beer and wine license expires on 1/1/2015. Laura’s shop is a great resource on my block, and for all of Main Street. Pet of the Week-Nosy

They call me Nosy because I am always curious and want to be part of what you are doing. You can’t fault a lady for being interested in her family! I heard the bombs explode from  two blocks away as I was taking portraits of runners after they finished the marathon.  The tone of my images quickly changed as I documented the reactions of the athletes and the spectators.

Near El Calafate, Argentina

We have returned to glorious Gloucester after traveling 23,676 miles from home to Santiago, Easter Island, Tierra del Fuego and a large part of southern Patagonia as well as Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls. It was an extraordinary adventure and an outstanding learning experience. I plan to put together several short photo/video posts featuring the highlights of this trip which I will post here on GMG.

For today, here is a portrait of a gentleman of Basque heritage who operates a small cantina on the lonely road between Torres del Paine National Park (Chile) and El Calafate in Santa Cruz Provence, Argentina. This location struck me because of the ‘aloneness’ of the setting, the gentleness of the proprietor and his family, and the stark beauty of the steppes.
