Solomon Jacobs

Good afternoon Joe my name is Jerry Clifford I am emailing you from a little village in the southwest of Ireland called Caherdaniel , Our local harbour is called Derrynane now to get to the point . I have found that Captain Solomon Jacobs Schooner the Ethel B Jacobs was wrecked on Abbey Island near Derrynane, I am a skipper with the local Lifeboat you can find us on facebook under Derrynane Inshore Rescue. I have been trying to get info and pictures on the Schooner and after trawling the internet your blog on Jacobs keeps popping up.

I would appreciate some help on gaining information or guidance towards the correct route to take, it just seems to be a great opportunity to bring this story to life .

Thanks for your help

Good Harbor Beach from Bass Rocks

Hi Joey,

I shot this from an altitude of 400’ from Bass Rocks on Saturday. Souther Road is the road visible in the foreground heading towards the beach and it’s marshes.  It started snowing just as the drone reached altitude.

Enjoy!

Mount Schrafft

Well, other than my fear that one of the boys would fall back and hence over the top of the fence into the neighbors’ yard, snow boarding on Mount Schrafft was a success today.

CRAZY amounts of snow in our little yard!

Good Morning Joe,

There is a team of very creative artists and crafters who sell on Etsy. We now have a Facebook page, www.facebook.com/teamcapeann, where we share our creations, ideas and help promote one another. We would love to have our page shared on Good Morning Gloucester. Not only will we be able to share our work with more potential customers, but there may be other artists and crafters out there who could join our community.

Thank you,

Where Are All the Goldfinches?

GMG reader Anita writes with a question about goldfinches ~

Hi Kim, I hope you can help me with this. I used to have lots of goldfinches. Lately I have not seen a one. I have the feeders but still no goldfinches.

Hi Anita,

Their lower numbers have been reported up and down the east coast. I’ve seen a few, but not nearly as many as in previous years. Goldfinches are migratory and nomadic, following food sources. And their population numbers vary widely from year to year. I’ve read the theory that they may be finding all the food they need in the wild, but that hardly seems plausible these past few weeks.

In 2011, an irruption of pine siskins arrived on Cape Ann. They, along with the goldfinches, were at the nyjer seed feeder from morning until nightfall. I would continue to keep your nyger seed feeders filled for finches, grosbeaks, and traveling siskins. Goldfinches (and squirrels) also love black oil sunflower seeds.

The male’s plumage shows in much quieter tones at this time of year. You may, as do I, have a few goldfinches feeding alongside your sparrows but they are less noticeable because their brown and beige color blends with the flock.

Filled bird feeders equals happy birds!

Watch the Instagram with the volume on–you’ll love hearing birdsongs in the snow and it will remind you of spring.

IMPORTANT STORM UPDATE: SNOW EMERGENCY EXTENDED

unnamedSnowstorm update

City parking ban extended until noon Tuesday; schools closed again

Dear Friends:

The mayor has issued the following announcement concerning the ongoing snowstorm.

The City of Gloucester snow emergency and parking ban is being extended due to the continued snow storm.

From now until noon on Tuesday, Feb. 10, all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets.

Violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owners expense. Residents may park in municipal and school parking lots during the parking ban. We have provided extra time so all cars may be removed from parking lots no later than noon on Tuesday. Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.

This is a historic amount of snow. Please have patience as the Department of Public Works continues to work through areas that require snow removal. Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at or near your homes.

The Gloucester Public Schools as well as the Public library will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Please check on your elderly neighbors.

For further updates on the storm, please follow developments on the city website:

Snow removal

The strong winds associated with this storm are causing heavy drifting throughout the city and in East Gloucester in particular. The DPW crews are working to keep the main roads open. Please be patient as snow removal is requiring multiple passes just to keep the roads open.

Trash pickup

At this writing (4 p.m.) trash pickup (Monday trash schedule) is still on for tomorrow, but please double-check the City website before putting out your trash.

Please stay off the roads

The Gloucester Police Department has issued the following request:

In addition to the current parking ban, the Gloucester Police Department is requestingALL vehicles stay off the road at this time. We are responding to a large amount of spinouts and accidents as a result of the ongoing storm. It is unsafe to drive in these conditions and we are asking for your cooperation for the duration of this storm.

Please stay off the roadways during this storm for your own safety and the safety of other motorists and pedestrians

@MattNoyesNECN Poll- Shoveling Multiple Times vs The Screw It Til The End Method. Which Person Are You?

I’ve been keeping up with the storm (or at least trying to) by going out every couple of hours to shovel the walkway, around the cars and the end of the driveway.  When driving over my mom’s to shovel her out I noticed a good number of cars and driveways that were straight up covered and hadn’t been touched.

Reflecting on it right now I’m not sure which is the better method.

One makes for obviously lighter duty at the end but the screw it til the end method where you sit around and eat like a pig and watch marathon tv series on Netflix sounds pretty damn good.

Please let it end…

What has been your tactic for handling the last few storms.  If the options presented in the poll don’t represent your method, leave a comment.
