Dave Sag’s Blues Party Tonight with Evan Goodrow 8:30-11:30 The Rhumb Line 2.19.2015

Dave says,

OK girls, lets get here pronto for the U.F.O. mass hysteria sighting of that age-old teen idol: Mr. Evan Goodrow.  Front man, Qatarist mais non oui, oui,This guy will have you rocking on your crutches with his marvelous renditions of cult classics, nouveau blues, and Transylvanian folk songs. I sure do admire this man’s dogged nerve and rubber determination. E.G. is one of our faves around these parts, and a splendid show is suspected. We’ve hauled in Mr. Benny Benson, Our Irish Ace of Pace®,  afloat since Dunkirk, to handle the the breast-beating. I’ll be on base, hoping for a sacrifice fly. So, put on that Hai-Karate® or Stetson™ and/or wrap dress (or Chinese shoes )and dance the night away while you think about yourself!

After the Valentine’s Weekend Storm… Rocky Neck, the Gloucester Marine Railway, and Harbor Loop From Mary Barker

Hi Joey,

I needed to check out what the 4 major storms had done to my favorite stomping grounds. Rocky Neck, the Gloucester Marine Railway, and the Harbor Loop.
I was not expecting to see Smith Cove iced over. The snow piles are outrageous. I hope everyone stays safe, dry and warm. I especially hope that groundhog was wrong! Keep smiling.

Don’t Plow Me In!

a9645_007wmMain Street, Rockport, circa 1898. Poole’s Drug Store is on the left, and Rockport’s first school house, circa 1790, is on the right. The team of horses in the background is most likely a wooden wedge-plow or a weighted wooden platform to compress the snow.

Did You Know That ANYONE Can Become A Member of the Audubon Society?

In case you were unaware, The Audubon Society is not a restricted organization. It is comprised entirely of people like you and me. Massachusetts alone has over 100,000 member citizens that belong to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Here is a link to get you started: Get Involved.

Particularly for Massachusetts residents, the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s website is especially helpful in identifying birds observed locally; see the Massachusetts Breeding Bird Atlas Find a Bird Page. The Common Eider seen on Rogers Street, and guided to safety by Thomas Donahue, is on the Mass Audubon Find A Bird page and you can read more about this interesting bird here: Common Eider. The atlas isn’t always helpful, for example, GMG contributor Donna recently spotted a Horned Grebe. That particular species is not included on the page however, it was easily identified by looking at other sources, including books and websites such as Cornell’s All About Birds website.

Reminder: Cape Ann Winter Birding Weekend, a program sponsored by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Massachusetts Audubon Society was rescheduled for the weekend of February 27 through the 29th. Click here for details.

The Iceman Cometh from Len Burgess

IceMan2-17-15_5732

Len writes ~ “After years of searching I’ve finally found the ICE MAN on one of my windows at least what’s left of him…”

Homemade Bratwurst on my Ice Dams!

This does not look good.
This does not look good.

After the relentless Snowzilla #1 through #4 even a well insulated house is going to have an ice dam. Ice freezes along the roof line and now any water percolating under the snow gets trapped and backs up under the shingles into your house leaking into that lovely ceiling fan. Turning the fan on high is a fun way to humidify your house but eventually you will burn your house down with an electrical short.

Solution: Roof Sausage and we’re not talking Ambie’s. My favorite looks like Karl’s Sausage Kitchen bratwurst. Take a spare pair of pantyhose and cut the leg off. Fill the leg with calcium chloride (that is the Snow Melt you are throwing on the walkway). If your ice dam is up high, tie a line to the end and toss it up there so it crosses the ice dam.

This is making me hungry.
This is making me hungry.

Done! Like a little beaver’s nightmare that sausage will cut across the ice dam and make a path for the water to drain.

Because we live on Cape Ann you know that one of these storms will eventually arrive and dump four inches of rain and you really don’t want the inside of your house to look like a tropical rain forest.

Rubber Duck Pro Tip: You can buy “roof pucks” to do this but stuffing socks and pantyhose is so much more fun. Go buy the big 50 lb bag of rock salt at Ace or Building Center then pour it into that 5 gallon bucket you have kicking around. Drop a mason jar on top and stick it on your front porch. Now you can fill a sock and toss or sprinkle some on that icy walkway. When you fill the bucket from a 50 lb bag, about two shovel fulls will not fit. Just catapult that up on your roof.

The wrong way: Do not use organic, non-gluten, non-GMO, non-fluoride Kosher Pink Gourmet Himalayan rock salt. Well, you can but only buy Rubber Duck brand, $35 a pound with 81 essential minerals. Call now. Also, send in your roof sausage photos to Joey. Extra points if you tie a Rubber Duck on the sausage.
