Took Mom for a sail on Ardelle last Thursday. It was a beautiful evening and a great way to spend two hours out on the harbor. There was a marvelous four piece band playing, called Down Home Swing, who entertained us the whole trip, that is when Harold wasn’t entertaining us with his feeding of the demanding visiting gulls.
I visited Harold’s boat yard in Essex and watched as Ardelle was being built, wrote about her back in 2011, and went aboard when Ardelle visited one of our Mug Ups on Madfish Wharf, but had never yet been on board to sail with her. I’m so glad I finally did and got to take my mother, who enjoyed it immensely.

It’s not that hard to write review panning a concert or an album. You’ve probably read many such reviews. It’s much more difficult to write a glowing piece that doesn’t sound corny or like a puff piece. Below is one of the best examples of a rave review that I’ve ever read. It is at once intelligent, witty, entertaining, straight to the point and completely devoid of obscure references and highfalutin language reviewers all to often use in an attempt to show off their intellect. It’s written by local singer/songwriter/composer/lighting designer Inge Berge, who is actually smart, so he doesn’t need to try and convince anybody. Check it out:
Fans of exquisite music: Pay attention to Ruby Rose Fox. Her headlining at The Cabot tonight, courtesy of Peter Van Ness and GimmeLive is easily among the top 3 shows I’ve seen all year (and I see way too many shows.) This show was pure magic. Sublime. Genius.
Her songwriting is smart, heartfelt, genre-bending, profound and just plain gorgeous. Her musicianship is impeccable. Her stage presence is mysterious, deep, eclectic and sexy as all get-out. The backup singers blend like butter yet cut like a razor. The band is road-tight and stadium-confident. The material is presented with rock balls, sensual vulnerability and analytic intelligence. A show chemically cleansed of clichés and standard showbiz cheese.
I count myself among the lucky few who got to experience this evening of not-yet-world-famous MA-grown music before it turns into something more industry-processed. (Hopefully not.)
Unfortunately, what I find of Ruby Rose Fox’s music currently online does not quite do justice to the show I saw tonight. But I understand there’s a full length CD in the works. I’m first in line to purchase.

“Polly-Five-Toe the Gull” started visiting the Thomas E. Lannon in 2014, it returned again this year. Capt. Heath has become friends with “Polly-5-Toe” as you can see in the slide show below. Polly-5-Toe loves oyster crackers and sits on the back of the Lannon, or on Capt. Heath’s hand to enjoy her crackers.

Sometimes there are things that I mean to squeeze into our weekend, but then simply don’t because we are busy at BBQs, or at the beach, or on the boat. This weekend, in particular, was really busy between covering the Bluefin Blowout and entertaining the boys.
That having been said, I am SO happy that we made time for the Misselwood Concours D’Elegance. Thatcher and Finn are obsessed with cars. Some of you may remember the Car Show Adventure we had this winter. So, for them, yesterday’s little field trip was Heaven!
Even if you are not a car enthusiast, you’d have to appreciate the beautiful display on the incredibly breathtaking Misselwood Property.
Here are some of our photographs. I say “ours” because the boys kept on stealing my camera and taking photos of their favorite cars.

Good People, Attached please find the preliminary results for this year’s Blackburn Challenge. The race happened yesterday, Saturday July 25. It’s a 20-mile open ocean race around Cape Ann. Chris Chappell, you can post this on the web site to get the usual feedback from race participants regarding the accuracy. There are many, many stories from this race. Tamsin, Donna tells me you were there when some of the #$@% was hitting the fan on the beach, so you know a little bit about what was going on. Although the wind speed was fairly normal for this area, the wind direction made for tough conditions (north, north-east blowing down the back shore). Here are some facts that make this race stand out:
There were 59 participants who started the race and did not finish. Last year there were 6. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn we had the largest number of DNF in Blackburn history, but I don’t know that. The last big weather year was 2000, and I count 33 DNFs that year.
This was the year of the High Performance Kayak. There were only four boats that finished in under 3 hours, all of them single HPK men. Last year 48 boats finished in under 3 hours, and they were all different kinds of boats. The winning HPK boat finished sixth overall. Normally the big multi person boats and the sliding seat racing boats own the fastest times.
The race committee accounted for every single boat, every single human. The participants were excellent to help us out by calling the race number when they stopped. We took to putting the official race number on the wrist bands we use for meal tickets. That has proven very helpful.
The timing boat followed in the last two participants relieving the coast guard who had a very busy day.
The chase boats won the day with their immediate response to challenging conditions.
The Gloucester police were also very helpful on the water lending a tow rope to a boat in distress.
Many, many race participants put aside their competitive nature to help a fellow racer in trouble. We deduct time from participants who lose time helping others.
The ham radio guys keep track of all the boats on the course. They know how many have dropped out, how many have passed half way, how many rounded the breakwater. This proved invaluable for tracking the boats.

Church Street Press is making dog tags from old typewriter keys and is currently looking for 15 to 20 people that would be interested in taking part in some end-product testing for these tags. The testing is centered around the particulars of the type of protective finish that is applied to the tag after it is made.
What you get: A free tag! Two actually. Read on for more info…
What you need to do: Once you get your tag, provide me with regular updates on its appearance–wear and oxidation–for the next three months. Sending a photo once every couple of weeks is fine. At the end of the test period, I will select the best finish per the testing results, and you will receive a coupon code for another free tag.
If you are interested in taking part, please send an email to churchstreetpress@gmail.com and I will get back to you.
