Nichole’s Picks 12/5 + 12/6

Tree lighting in Gloucester last weekend….tree lighting in Rockport this weekend.

Pick #1:  Christmas in Rockport

1:00 Saturday, December 5th

It is only fitting that in the incredibly quaint, picturesque, and perfect town of Rockport, Santa should arrive by lobster boat. This has been a tradition for as long as I can remember, but please note, that this year’s schedule will be a little bit different.

Santa has decided that he would like more time to linger, shop, and visit with the townsfolk so he has cleared his afternoon schedule to arrive in Rockport earlier than normal.

Santa’s boat should be arriving at T-Wharf at 1:00 in the afternoon on Saturday, December 5th. The tree lighting ceremony will begin at 4:00. That leaves a nice amount of time to shop, explore, walk our new breakwater, grab a snack or some cocoa, and maybe get some one on one time with Santa himself.

Once again, I will be doing Santa portraits at the East Gloucester School holiday fair.  The fair is this Saturday, December 5th, from 10:00a to 2:00p.

The lines are short, and we print the photos while you wait.  A variety of packages are available for $10 per sheet.  You can also buy a high-resolution JPEG image for use as a holiday card.

Bring your family, bring your pets, and bring your crying babies!

Thanks.

If You Store Firewood-I’m A 100% Endorser Of The Firewood Rack We Use

ShelterLogic Lumber Rack Firewood Adjustable Bracket Kit

Here’s mine assembled. Took all of 45 seconds.

20151201_193456-01.jpeg

You can get it on Amazon for $43.54 and when I tell you it couldn’t be more secure or easier to put together, I’m telling you it couldn’t be more secure or easier to put together.

Literally you measure the space for where you want to stack your wood, go to the Building center and have them cut two 2x4s and slide the 2x4s into the collars at the base of the rack. Listen, I’m a complete dope when it comes to DIY projects.  On a scale from 1-10 on completely useless with a tool I’m a 3.  This a grandmother could do with ease.

It looks nice and you can store a ton of wood inside instead of having to go out into the snow and unbury your wet damp firewood.  It is made for indoor or outdoor use and gets a 4.5 star rating on amazon. Read the reviews here  Here’s the link to the listing on Amazon-

FAQs

Q: What kind of knot do you use for the bracelets?
A: It is a Carrick Bend knot that I tie with double strands of line. Beyond its great functionality for securely joining two lines, the knot also has some cool history. The knots pattern is seen in relief in the Elizabethan era plasterwork of Ormonde Castle in Carrick-on-Suir, so clearly I am not (no pun intended) the first one to recognize its beauty.

Q: What are your clasps made from?
A: I have literally searched the world to find the highest quality clasps available. Both of these unique magnetic clasps are very well made, and free of lead and zinc. Both are durable stainless steel with silver and brass plating.

Q: What if I want a color or color combination that isn’t listed on the site?
A: I would love to make it for you! Right now I have over 30 different colors of cord. As you can imagine, that makes it really hard to list all the possible combinations! If you send me an email – kim@shoreknots.com – and describe what you want, I’ll put it together. If you don’t like it, we’ll keep trying until you do.

Q: What if I order a bracelet and it doesn’t fit?
A: Just send it back and we will get you one that fits.

Q: Can I wear my bracelet in the water?
A: It’s fine to wear your bracelet in the water, but we recommend moderation. Long term exposure to salt water may eventually cause some minor color fading of the cord and possible erosion on the clasp.

Q: How can I keep my clasp shiny?
A: Natural wear and regular contact with your skin can cause some minor tarnish to the clasp. Jewelry polishes work great, but can be expensive. I’ll let you in on a little secret that is probably already in your house = toothpaste. Yep, just rub some toothpaste on the clasp, rinse it off, and your clasp will be as good as new!

Q: Do you guarantee your products?
A: Absolutely! We want our customers to be 100% satisfied! If you have any problems, let us know and we will make things right. As LL Bean has said for years, “there are two rules to customer service: 1 – the customer is always right, and 2 – if the customer is wrong, go back to rule number 1!”

Q: Do you have other products?
A: Not yet, but some are coming soon. I have lots of ideas and look forward to adding them to the website soon.

Q: Is Brewster a good dog?
A: He’s the best! A bit of a goof, but I sure love him!

HOLIDAY SHOP LOCAL SUPER SCOOP: FOLLY COVE DESIGNS FOR SALE AT ALEXANDRA’S BREAD!

Alexandra's Bread Louise kenyon ©Kim Smith 2015Don’t miss this rare opportunity to purchase exquisite handmade vintage linens. Pictured above is a Louise Kenyon table mat from 1943, in absolute mint condition. Alexandra has a fabulous array of table runners, place mats, and holiday cards by Folly Cove trained artists Sara Elizabeth and Isabel Natti, printed on cotton on the original acorn press. The prices are incredibly reasonable, starting at only five dollars for the cards and twenty dollars for the linens. I am positive any one of these whimsical designs would make a treasured gift (or you may just have to purchase one for yourself as I am so tempted to do!). Alexandra has many more designs than what you see pictured here so stop in and have a look see!

Shop Local for a New Orleans Experience & a Holiday Tribute to a Music Icon

Henri Smith for the New Orleans Peoples Project – taken after Allen Toussaint’s funeral in New Orleans.

Vickie and I applaud everyone who promotes shopping locally and truly appreciate people who buy tickets to local concerts as gifts for Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.  This Saturday at 7pm we present our third New Orleans Christmas concert at Beverly’s fully-restored, acoustically stellar Larcom Theatre starring Gloucester’s Henri Smith and featuring renowned trumpeter Stanton Davis (who performed with Henri at Celebrate Gloucester 2010) and Grammy-winner Amadee Castenell on Sax & Flute.  This year, Henri’s full brass band (complete with Tuba) will perform a special tribute to one of Henri’s mentors, Allen Toussaint, who died last month while on tour in Madrid.  Tickets are available here.

Check out this video of Henri with Allen Toussaint that I shot last year in Allen’s dressing room at Berklee Performance Center. Allen explains how Henri serves as a New Orleans ambassador — and also has very kind words for Amadee, saying “When Amadee was in New Orleans we didn’t leave home without him.  He’s our favorite saxophonist!”  Then he reveals why Amadee no longer lives in New Orleans.

This will be an emotional show for Vickie and me.  We hope you’ll join us in a Christmas Second Line Parade through the aisles of Beverly’s Larcom Theatre.
