When I lived for a while in the mountains near Woodstock, NY, people there used to say, “We have three seasons: July, August and Winter.”  This spring might make you wonder if the same is true here in Gloucester.  It’s not.  Nice weather is around the corner and it starts this weekend when we celebrate Memorial Day and call it the beginning of summer (even though astronomically, summer isn’t for another 4 weeks).  So … good riddance oh nasty spring — IT’S TIME TO PARTY!

GHS cool Class of 1971: Who did this?

How did I get here? The Gloucester High School gym was named after Albert Bacheler, as in the former Principal and owner of the very special Civil War era coat needing restoration. We’ve heard from Gloucester graduates and former teachers with no recollection of the coat. We’ve also heard from some that remember seeing it. Thanks to Barry Pett and Ken Joyce for adding in details. I’m looking for interior photographs of the old gym, especially those showing the cadet side where we’ve been told the coat was featured. On this poster it’s simply G.H.S. Gym.

Barry Pett’s graduation year made me think of 1970s high school concerts held in gyms, and there you have it: off road research and fun side trips.

I’ve always enjoyed the multitude of colors the buoys bring to this scene.   Last time I was there, it was just before sunset and I was chased away by a few raccoons surveying the area.  (Buoys made by my neighbor Greg Marchant, Ipswich Bay Wooden Buoys)

Math Volunteers Needed

Wellspring’s Adult Learning Initiative (ALI) is seeking volunteer tutors to help in our math class.  You don’t need to be an expert, just bring your enthusiasm!

Rubbed The Pork Loin with Paul Prudhomme blackened seasoning and coarse black pepper.  Set up the kettle using the snake method with briquettes, apple chunks and cherry chips.

When she hit 130 internal I basted her with some Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce.

145 internal and she got pulled off and rested for 10 minutes before thinly slicing it for sandwiches.

PIPING PLOVERS RUNNING 2 GOOD HARBOR BEACH GLOUCESTER COPYRIGHT KIM SMITHNot shy in the least, the four Good Harbor Beach Piping Plovers spent the early part of the morning running and feeding along the shoreline, bathing in the tidal flats, and ferociously defending their territory against other avian intruders. A jogger ran past the one preening at the water’s edge–he was quite close–but that did not seem to alarm the Plover. They are diminutive little creatures, about six to seven inches in length, and show mostly white feathers when flying overhead.

One Piping Plover seemed to be testing different sites to nest, momentarily hunkering down, then leaving the spot, and then returning a few moments later to vigorously dig a deeper depression in the sand, before then flying away.

The roped off area appears to be a terrific solution in helping to protect the possible nesting sites. Visitors to Good Harbor Beach this morning were very mindful about respecting the boundary. And there was not a single dog in sight, off leash or otherwise. The Plovers flew in and out of the restricted area, as did Killdeers and several other species of shore birds.
