Magnolia Pier Debate Part 2 – Check out this video from 4 years ago — NO Barricades=Safer and More Fun!

4 years ago, I filmed people of all ages (from 5 years old to grandpa) jumping off Magnolia pier, with at least 3 people jumping for the first time — all the while there’s a game of “Pier Tag” going on too.  Pier Tag is impossible when the barricades are up. It’s time for the bureaucrats to man-or-woman-up, stop worrying so much about getting sued and remove the barricades to encourage kids, teens, adults, and grandparents to gather together in a safe, healthy place for some summer fun!  While you’re at it, put the ladders back too. Joey – you think we should have a pole about this?

A VERY SPECIAL FAMILY From Skip Bertolino

7/1/16                                               A Very Special Family

I was driving my car on Decatur Street in East Gloucester during the 4th of July weekend when I noticed a young boy all alone sitting behind with what I perceived was a lemonade stand selling lemonade and with a handmade sigh that read “100 % Profits to US Veterans” so I stopped the car rolled down the passenger side window and asked him.

What are u selling, he told me he’s selling “Arnold Palmers, which is a mix of lemonade & ice tea.

I said Wow I’ll take one of those, how much are they? he said 50 cents. I asked him his name he said, “Sean Bergin”. I asked where do u live he said just up the street.

As he was mixing the drink I asked him, Sean what are u doing with the money he reply’s I’m giving it all to the veterans.

He finishes mixing the drink, and he walks to the passenger side window of my car and hands me the drink and I pay him with a little extra for his cause & I thanked him.

As he was walking back to his stand, I called Sean, and as he turned around I said to him, “I want to thank you for what u are doing for the Veterans, as a Veteran myself, it is greatly appreciated.

He then proceeds to start to walk back to the car with the money I paid him, he puts the money back through the  window looks me straight in the eye  says to me  “You’re a veteran ?” I said yes, if you’re a veteran the drink is FREE!!

I must tell you I was speechless, to be that young and to be so giving of his time to raise money for Vets and to think of Veterans in that way.

I finally gathered my thoughts and I thanked him but told him to please keep the money for his cause he said, OK!

That night I said I have to go back tomorrow and get a picture of that fine young man and that awesome stand.

So the next day I drive down with my wife to take a picture and what do I find, not only was

Sean age 11 at the stand but his brother Ryan age 13 and there 2 cousins Sofia & Olivia Codis ages 10 and 7. I was beside myself with joy they had made this July 4th very special.

Upon leaving I asked the group why you are doing this. Ryan responds, well some Veterans when they came back weren’t treated very well so we want to help them.

I think I can speak for all Veterans and their families this weekend you surely have!

Sean, Ryan, Sofia, Olivia God Bless You, thank you and thanks for thinking of us veterans.

We salute you,,, Job Well Done!

We had an absolute blast at the Fishtown Horribles Parade and fireworks on the 3rd and Rockport Fireman’s Association Parade and bonfire on the 4th. I extend to all of the volunteers, organizations, musicians, and public safety officials a sincere thank you for making these events such a rousing fun success year after year.

Cape Ann is such a great place to visit, live, work, raise a family, and run a business. Not just because of the beaches, the woods, the dining, the museums, the arts, the sunrises over Thacher and the sunsets over Ipswich Bay. There is something far more powerful than any of that. It is the people.

uhh

Like us on Facebook and see all of YOUR awesome parade photos here!

The people of Cape Ann are industrious, hardy, enthusiastic, and part of one community. As you can imagine that made it difficult to pick just…

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING FAMILY PAINTING

Nina Goodick writes,

Hi Kim:

I was wondering if you would post this portrait painting on GMG.

It is a painting of our grandfather, Rosario Testaverde, painting by Armand Sindoni.

It went missing about 10 years when a family member moved.

The family would very much like to get it back again if possible.

Thanks

Nina (Testaverde) Goodick

Awesome video of Pier Jumping at Magnolia Pier

For some odd reason, somebody keeps barricading the kids’ favorite spot. This is creating an unsafe situation.  Generations of young children have learned to jump off the pier by being able to jump without having to climb the railing, which makes it a lot harder to learn — and way more scary too.  Whomever keeps barricading the jump spot, please remove the barricades.  Thanks!

Could Disney help the Good Harbor Beach Piping Plovers?

The new animated short film shown prior to Finding Dory is stunning. It features a baby bird beckoned by her mother from the dunes to the edge of the waves. The animated baby bird masters its first venture beyond the nest. Some things have to be seen on the big screen.

Positive news:

On a recent morning, very early, Patti Amaral swept her arms joyfully imploring me to look– an entirely litter free Good Harbor Beach parking lot after a weekend and before DPW had arrived. She exclaimed what a positive change has transpired over the past 10 years and how many people help.

She still sees some litter in this vista, but it’s camouflaged. She hopes to see the removal of the last vestiges of raked and buried trash from years’ back. I doctored a photo to help. It’s to the right of the back green gate.

What’s coming to Main Street?

East end, middle, west end: there are phases of construction all along Main Street in Gloucester.

The goodlinens soft opening was pushed back;  hopefully the doors will be ready to open July 15th. The space required lots of love.

The gallery and artist studios moving into the old Green Life space at 196 Main St and wrapping along Elm could be ready in August. The framing for the artist studios matches up with the windows.
