PAPA PLOVER IS MISSING

Papa Plover was no where to be found this morning (5:30 to 8am). This is very unusual as neither he nor Mama ever left the chicks alone for more than a few moments.

Little Chick spent a good part of the morning resting alone in the sand except for a few moments when he was feeding with the migrating Semi-palmated Plovers. If you see Little Chick, keep a safe distance, which will allow him to forage and rest. If anyone notices Papa, please let us know in the comment section or email me at kimsmithdesigns.com. Thank you so much.

EAT, SLEEP, STRETCH, CHECK IN WITH PA, REPEAT

Day thirty-six and our Superstar is growing beautifully. Barring people and predator dramas, Little Chick and Papa’s days have taken on a confident routineness –forage, sleep, wake, preen, do stretches, maybe practice flying (and maybe not), check in with Pa, repeat.

Extra shout out to Chief McCarthy for making Good Harbor Beach his early morning routine, too. Thank you everyone for all that you are doing to help the Good Harbor Beach Piping Plovers!

DANCE OF THE TREE SWALLOWS

Male Tree Swallow

You may have noticed the pretty swallows perching in clusters on telephone lines and flying low over the sand. Both Barn and Tree Swallows can be found at the beach throughout the warmer months, but the birds that are beginning to gather on Cape Ann en masse are the Tree Swallows. The following is a short film from last year’s migration that explains what is happening at this time of year with the Tree Swallows here on our beaches and dunes, and in our neighborhoods.

Getting Close to Weigh In

Excitement is brewing down here at Cape Ann’s Marina resort. With over a dozen fish landed and several coming in tonight for weigh-in, this is a show not to be missed!    Some captains and crew will make the decision to stay out overnight and bring their fish to the dock tomorrow. No matter what happens we are in for a fantastic weekend!

Windhover Performing Arts Center has presented electrifying Quarry Dances for the past five years on Cape Ann. The New York Citybased

dance company, Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre, returns again this summer for a residency at Windhover Performing Arts Center to create and choreograph a site-specific quarry dance for the public. The audience for the quarry dance performances continues to expand with people of all ages coming to enjoy them from Boston, its surrounding areas and the local community of Cape Ann.

For Quarry Dance 6, the Dušan Týnek dancers will use the architecture, cliffs, ledges, and paths surrounding the quarry as the backdrop for the quarry dance. No contact with the water is permitted, due to the nature of this particular quarry being a reservoir for the town of Rockport water supply. The uniqueness and beauty of the quarry will be embraced and honored as in previous dances. The dramatic and echo-inspiring spaces underneath the Keystone Bridge will be enhanced by the dance.

Russ Gershon, a Boston based saxophonist, arranger, composer and the leader of the globe-trotting ten-piece Either/Orchestra will improvise an accompaniment for the Quarry Dance. This will be his fourth time participating, and he will utilize saxophones, flutes, and percussion instruments. He draws his ideas from jazz and other American popular music traditions, along with Ethiopian and Latin music.

Performances of Quarry Dance 6 are free and open to the public, however, donations are strongly suggested. No reservations are required, but please note that the performances are all weather dependent. In case of rain, the performance is cancelled. The performance will last just over one hour.

Parking is permitted at Granite Pier, however only Rockport residents with resident stickers will be admitted to park for free. Others will need to pay the $6.00 fee for non-resident parking, a requirement of the Granite Pier Association. The other option is to park for free at Windhover, located about 1.5 miles away at 257 Rear Granite Street. There will be a shuttle continuously transporting guests from Windhover to Granite Pier starting 30 minutes before the show and then 30 minutes afterwards. Windhover’s address: 257 rear Granite Street.  Be sure to watch for the Windhover sign which designates parking.  Shuttles will be provided by “Ride on Transportation,” “Beauport Ambulance Service,” and the new “Fishermen’s Taxi,” all of which are kindly donating their services.

Note: Seating will be on a first-come-first-served basis and a number of chairs will be provided.  In addition, people are welcome to bring blankets to sit on, as well as bring their own water, snacks and soft drinks. Please do be advised that space is limited. For further information, please check the Windhover website: www.windhover.org You may also call Windhover at 978-546-3611, or email Executive Director Lisa Hahn at windhover@verizon.net. (Windhover is a non-profit 501©3 organization.)

Major funding has been made possible by the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation. This program is also supported in part by grants from both the Rockport and Gloucester Cultural Councils, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Donations from individuals also help support the Quarry Dances for the future.

Please come and enjoy this performance in the unspoiled natural beauty of a Cape Ann Quarry, and please spread the word.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony Selects Susan Guest-McPhail as the Season’s fourth Summer Artist.

Currents, Susan Guest-McPhail’s show of mixed media paintings, opens on Wednesday, July 26 and runs through Tuesday, August 15. The opening reception is Saturday, July 29 from 6-8 pm at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck, 53 Rocky Neck Ave., Gloucester, MA. The public is invited to the reception to meet the artist and partake of delicious food and refreshing drinks.

Like so many other artists living on Cape Ann, Guest-McPhail’s work is influenced by living near water, beach and marsh. This special seaside atmosphere lives in her work and, according to Guest-McPhail, needs to be embraced, especially in these turbulent times.

“Making art is like breathing, you need to just do it,” says Guest-McPhail.

She paints with acrylics, oils, encaustics and mixed media. The papers that are used in her collages are mostly hand-printed with some found items added. “Experimenting with new ideas, such as using curly, dried grasses tied to sticks for brushes, or a night of printing in a special color makes me smile and feel energized,” says Guest-McPhail.

Most of the time she paints in a contemporary realist or totally non- objective style, but there is always a string of movement flowing through that keeps her brush, her brayer, and herself moving like the tides.

According to Guest-McPhail, “starting a non-objective painting is an interesting mystery. You don’t know where it will take you. It’s like making a puzzle without the picture on the box and the finish is the surprise. My collage papers are hand-printed in acrylics or oil and the making is as much fun as cutting them up,”

Guest-McPhail agrees with mindfulness expert and painter Ellen Langer, who is a social psychologist and the first female professor to gain tenure in the Psychology Department at Harvard University. Langer says, “Make art for fun. Make art for a richer life.”

Susan Guest-McPhail’s art has been shown in New York at the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and several museums and galleries. She was the featured artist in Making Monotypes Using a Gelatin Plate: Printmaking Without a Press by Nancy Marculewicz (2002)  Her awards include the cover of Arts Around Boston magazine and the American Artists magazine award at the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in New York City.

Guest-McPhail is an alumna of Montserrat College of Art and the Vermont Studio School. Her artist memberships include: National Society of Women Artists; Rockport Art Association and Museum; North Shore Arts Association; Monotype Guild of New England; The Pastel Society of America; and The Copley Society of Boston.

Guest-McPhail teaches workshops for the Rockport Art Association and Museum and the North Shore Arts Association.
