Keep It Simple Stupid.

So often we get caught up in complex recipes with a million ingredients when some of the best things are simple to make with just a few.

Shrimp peeled and deveined.  Swathed in butter and minced garlic.

A half a chimney of charcoal spread evenly on the bottom of the charcoal grate.

A turn or two and when the grill flares up from the dripping butter close it to snuff out the flames.  Easy Peasy lemon Squeezy.  5 minutes prep time 5 minutes cook time.

Done.

Delicious.

BEST GINGERBREAD HOUSE EVER, Thanks to Sista Felicia!

For those of you who don’t know, Sista Felicia makes the most gorgeous and precious holiday cookie collections you’ve ever seen…in addition to a ridiculously long list of other culinary treats for the tastebuds.

I was so mad at myself for missing out on ordering her Halloween and Thanksgiving cookies…they kind of go like hot cakes….so, as soon as I saw heard that she was putting together gingerbread house kits, I reached out and ordered one!

Hands down one of the best holiday purchases I have ever made.  I mean, I knew it would be great….but great is beyond an understatement.  The time, care, attention to detail, and holiday spirit that goes into each and every kit is priceless.  Finn and I picked it up the other day and were immediately dying to tear into it….but, we patiently waited…although not for long.  I was able to hold the boys at bay for two nights, but come Tuesday, they couldn’t wait another second.

As we untied the bow, opened the box, unwrapped the goodies, and spread out the enormous number of treats, candies, intricate decorations, icing, and beautifully baked gingerbread roof and walls the boys’ imaginations starting racing.  We have built Gingerbread Houses every year….but, this one takes the cake.

We melted the little hard candies into beautiful stained glass windows and went crazy decorating.  The boys worked happily while listening to Christmas carols until we ran out of frosting.  My boys were a bit heavy handed with their frosting application, otherwise we could have continued for another hour easily.

The best part is that we still have so many candy decorations left that we can go back this weekend and decorate lots more!  The boys want to make a shed and a doghouse.

If you are interested in ordering do so quickly!  No doubt these will sell out FAST!

A Day Made for Poets and Artists

I took a walk on Good Harbor Beach this week in the sunshine and wind.  The sand was swept toward the ocean pushed by the wind, rushing to meet the incoming waves.  This picture doesn’t really show you how the sand was moving, but picture “Lawrence of Arabia” sandstorm and dial it back a couple of notches.  (Allow me to note that I was crunching in sand in my teeth as I got into the car to leave just to add some color to the imagery.)

IMG_0979

As the wind pushed and the tide approached against the wind, lovely spindrifts left the impression that the water and sand were moving as a couple out to sea.

IMG_1078

If you look hard and squeeze your eyes a little, you can see the sun allowed for a little rainbow to make an appearance.  Think “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and dial it back several notches.

SCARS OF SILENCE UPDATE AND APPEAL

Two hundred year old Armenian olive trees, Yalova, Turkey, 2015. I found myself looking for living things I could touch and photograph that witnessed the Armenian Genocide.  It is said that the olive tree was first brought to the Mediterranean region from Armenia in 4000BC.

Scars of Silence: Three Generations From The Armenian Genocide
a film by Nubar and Abby Alexanian

2017 has been a very productive year for our film, Scars of Silence. Our first ever multimedia art installation opened in September at The Armenian Museum of America in Watertown MA and runs through January 27, 2018. Curated by Jennifer Liston Munson, Senior Designer at the MFA, the show includes excerpts from our film and a selection of beautiful black and white prints by Nubar from his last trip to Turkey. The gallery talk we did at the opening was very moving, with poignant audience questions and family stories paving the way to a memorable evening. We’re planning a second gallery talk in January and hope to show a couple of additional scenes in addition to the current seventeen minute assembly. More on this soon.

We plan to release our film in 2018. But in order to do this, we need a hefty blast of wind in our sails. As you may remember, we’ve received grants and strong positive feedback in the past for our earlier 10 -17 minute assemblies from foundations (including MacArthur). What we’ve learned from foundations is that they want to see where we’re taking this film: what is the narrative arc of the film and what are our cinematic options. Before we apply for the funds from them to complete post production, we need to hire our editor, Sabrina, to create a rough cut of the entire film that will give the funders and places like Sundance and PBS, an idea of the story we are telling and how we plan to tell it.

The good news is that Sabrina’s schedule has an opening in January & February, so we need to raise $15,000 by the end of December to engage her.  We’ve made it this far thanks to you, our generous supporters, and we hope you can continue on this journey with us by making a tax-deductible contribution that will bring us where we need to be to complete Scars of Silence.
So please, if you can, help us with a tax-deductible donation by clicking HERE HERE
You  can also send a check to Filmmakers Collaborative, 6 Eastman Place, Suite 202, Melrose MA 02176
and write Scars of Silence on the check.
As always, we are grateful for your support these past 6 years and look forward to screening the film with you.
All our best
Abby and Nubar

BREAKING: GLOUCESTER STAGE OFFICIAL STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO ISRAEL HOROVITZ ALLEGATIONS

Gloucester Stage Company

Press statement – November 30, 2017

Earlier this month, the Board of the Gloucester Stage Company received information about an allegation of sexual assault by Israel Horovitz. We cancelled plans to produce a Horovitz play in 2018 and agreed that under no circumstances would he continue to serve on the Board, ex officio, as artistic director emeritus. Mr. Horovitz denied the allegation and requested a meeting, but then resigned. We deeply regret that past complaints were mishandled. On behalf of the Board I apologize to the brave women who came forward in 1992 and 1993 but were not heard. We are individually and collectively appalled by the allegations, both old and new. Such behavior cannot be tolerated and our thoughts are with the women who were victimized. We are committed to making sure that GSC is a place where people are safe, free to do their best work, and to speak out without fear of reprisal.
