#AcornPress in action: Mary Rhinelander demonstrates printmaking at #GloucesterMA O’Maley Middle School, also
the upcoming weekly workshop at Cape Ann Museum that Mary Rhinelander will be teaching is SOLD OUT, again. Look for future offerings.
The very dedicated and talented O’Maley art teacher, Brett Dunton, shares some action shots of fine artist and master printmaker, Mary Rhinelander, guest teaching printmaking with the authentic Acorn press in one of the 8th Grade art classes at O’Maley Innovation Middle school. Note the foot.

Historic portraits sometimes belie the physicality of the process

Wonder if the O’Maley students will try this energetic technique? photograph of Aino Clarke from the Cape Ann Musem Folly Cove collection Continue reading “#AcornPress in action: Mary Rhinelander demonstrates printmaking at #GloucesterMA O’Maley Middle School, also”

Rock Walls and Coins
A little story to tell today. In 1979 when she was 87 or so, Gertrude Vanderwell Basil wrote a letter to my cousin outlining some history of the Gloucester area. Here is some of that letter, reflecting on her time as a child in Gloucester probably around 1900: “then your great grandma [probably Ann Conlon Handran] left and took a job at a big brick home for tenants who went out fishing and their wives. She was very happy there. I used to stop on my way home and she gave me a little coin purse with 11 cents in it because I stopped and visited her. I was only about 6 or 7 years. On the way home up on Bonds Hill there was a new home built that has a new rock wall in from of their home and I did not want to take that little purse home because Mom (Gertrude Holland Vanderwell) never let us kids accept any money from anyone so—I never did get it back because after years that place was torn down and it made me feel bad to think poor Nannie gave it to me.”
I understood her implication to be that she tucked the coin purse into the rock wall near the home on “Bonds Hill”. As fate would have it, we are staying on Bond Street and those rock walls call to me every time I drive by them. I think of a little girl’s coin purse with 11 cents inside perhaps still right where she tucked it over one hundred years ago. And I think of the long past ties I have to this area and count myself blessed.

Super Bowl #MuseumBowl wager @MFABoston vs @philamuseum
The 2018 #SuperBowl LII winner will trigger a museum loan from the losing city’s rival fine arts institution. If the Patriots win, @philamuseum will lend Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky by Benjamin West. Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston. The MFA would lend Mrs. James Warren (Mercy Otis) by John Singleton Copley, which the MFA modified for #museumbowl twitter trash talk vs Atlanta.

Philadelphia Museum created a video this year.
When the Patriots win the Eagles might feel more like this woodblock print from the MFA famous prints and drawings collection: **Sad** Eagle on a Pine Branch in the Rain, Isoda Koryusai, ca.1770s, Japanese Edo period, Bigelow collection.

On Friday the two museum twitter accounts will throw down. I wonder which works the MFA will modify this year for the trash talk on twitter, maybe their iconic Copley Paul Revere?
The Philadelphia Museum of Art could doctor their Rubens Prometheus… if so one hopes with the logo, not a player. (And one could argue even still that it’s in the Patriots favor as knowledge of foresight for the win, and Prometheus comes out all right in the end.)

Last year the MFA did a great job with the Thomas Sully–but hey what about that eagle installed nearby.

There are a lot of eagles in the MFA collection…Too dark?

What would you pick for the MFA #MuseumBowl?

#SuperBlueBloodMoon OVER GLOUCESTER -By Kim Smith
A rare and spectacular trifecta of Moon events occurred this morning– a Blue Moon, a Supermoon, and a lunar eclipse. Additionally, I have been trying to get a shot of the Moon slipping behind the UU Church. I thought it would be beautiful if it ever lined up all at once, to see Moonlight coming through the open arches of the UU Church’s steeple. In the past either the weather didn’t cooperate or the site line was off. Today, joy! And because of the eclipse there is a magnificent red shadow edging the Moon’s glow.
From NASA: So for viewers in the East the Moon will enter the outer part of Earth’s shadow at 5:51 a.m., but Johnston says it won’t be all that noticeable. The darker part of Earth’s shadow will begin to blanket part of the Moon with a reddish tint at 6:48 a.m. EST, but the Moon will set less than a half-hour later. “So your best opportunity if you live in the East is to head outside about 6:45 a.m. and get to a high place to watch the start of the eclipse—make sure you have a clear line of sight to the horizon in the west-northwest, opposite from where the Sun will rise,” said Johnston.
Hassan and Belur

Monday we travelled from Bengaluru to Hassan. Barbara climbed to the top of Shravanbelagola to see the statue of Gomateshwara. After lunch we motored to Belor to visit the only Hoysala temple still in active worship.
Ice Sailing on Niles Pond
These “ice sailors” were enjoying the blue skies this past weekend on Niles Pond. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen ice sailing in action but it’s fun to watch!

Apparently the Dutch were some of the first to experiment with ice sailing, not to break speed records, but to transport goods across frozen lakes and rivers. They modified their traditional vessels by strapping blades or runners to the hull so that their shipping businesses would continue to be profitable during the long winter months. In the 1930s and 40s it was quite the sport in the US before the automobile took the speed spotlight. See link for more info.
8th Annual Rotary Polar Plunge
The Gloucester Rotary Club is pleased to announce its 8th Annual Polar Plunge to help make Polio history!
FREEZIN’ FOR A REASON

On Saturday, February 3rd from 10:30 am – 12:00 noon
At Long Beach in front of the Cape Ann Motor Inn
Please park at Good Harbor Beach and take the free shuttle bus to the polar plunge
Free admission: Make donations to #EndPolioNow campaign at: https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/polio/team/Gloucester
The Gloucester Rotary Club will again host clubs from Rotary District 7930 (eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire) for the 8th annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Long Beach in Gloucester. The event is part of Rotary International’s ongoing campaign to eradicate polio in our lifetime. Several hundred people are expected to plunge into the cold waters off Cape Ann this year. Last year, over 300 people braved the icy waters, raising more than $120,000. Since the first Rotary Polar Plunge in 2011, Massachusetts Rotarians have raised over a half-million dollars with this event. Since 1985, Polio has been the signature cause for Rotary International as it has teamed up with partners including The Global Poverty Project, The Global Eradication Initiative, The World Health Organization, and UNICEF. Since that time, more than a billion dollars have been raised among Rotary clubs worldwide and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
More information on Rotary’s #EndPolioNow campaign can be found at www.EndPolio.org. This year, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has again pledged a 2:1 match for every dollar Rotarians and friends raise toward eradication efforts.
A 60-cents donation can make the difference in changing a person’s life.
Please support Gloucester Rotarians as they brave the icy waters to help eradicate polio in our lifetime. The goal for the plunge is $125,000. Supporters can text “polio” to 71777 or visit www.GloucesterRotary.org to make a donation.
