Phew…

aaand I think I had this when we were down in the third quarter-

“Jacksonville offensive line is getting gassed.  We’re going to win this game.”

Chorus of Coyotes

Listen to this racket!  We came home from a great night out with friends only to be greeted by this chorus of coyotes.  You obviously can’t see anything, but they sounded like they were super close.  Creepy.

Pet of the Week- Mr. Tiffany & Champ

1.22.2018 Pet of the Week--Mr. Tiffany and Champ

My buddy Champ and I are here together looking for our second chance at love.  We are a bonded pair and adore spending time playing, grooming, napping and investigating side-by-side.  Are you ready for two?  Our owner had to make a difficult choice after the hurricanes that hit the Virgin Islands and they were unable to keep us but wanted to make sure that we stayed together.  We were lucky enough to get a flight out to safety and new possibilities here at the shelter. I am a special needs kitty because I have the early stages of gingivitis and will need extra dental care in the future. But don’t let that scare you! I promise the extra care I need will only make me more grateful resulting in more nights snuggling on the couch together! Are you ready to open up your heart and home to two adorable transplants?  Come in to visit today!  To find out more about Mr. Tiffany and Champ and all of the available animals at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter please visit our website:capeannanimalaid.org

Main Street 1947: those were the days my friend

The 1947 Gloucester High Yearbook contained the following ad page.1947 yearbook ads

I thought it would be interesting to see what is in the places of these businesses today  as well as pictures of these businesses from that time period. I went to the Gloucester Municipal Archives in City Hall for help.  Three volunteers worked hard to help me–thanks to Sandy Williams, Mary Williams and Sue Wright–but we did not succeed in finding pictures of Main Street from the 1940s.  We did find what you see below.  Most of these are very poor quality as they are cell phone pictures taken of photos that are probably 50 years old or so.  We did determine that the numbering systems hasn’t changed much over the years, so that was a big help.

This is 120-122 Main, former home of Dr. George Barron, optometrist. The Franklin is 118 Main Street today.

img_1028-1

Google maps pretty clearly shows where this is today.

128 Main St. Glouc Google Map (2)

You can see North Shore Furniture on the corner here listed at 161-163 Main St. I think today this is DIVA.

Blanchards Jeweler shown here, listed in the 1971 City Directory at 125 Main.

The Hesperus Diner’s currently doing business as Supreme Roast Beef.

136 Main Street, previously Sandler’s Jewelers, is now the Curtain Shop.  I understand the original building burned down and was rebuilt.

According to the volunteers, M.B. Wright Stationer at 108 Main used to be “the old waiting station” for late bus pickup for Gloucester students. It’s listed as “Proctor Brothers Building”.

Charles H. Swift at 133 Main is a bit of a mystery as Larsens is listed at 131 Main and the Looking Good Salon is listed at 135. It seems apparent that establishment was nearby.

AF Silva Custom Tailor at 89 1/2 Main must previously have been near today’s Brass Monkey, formerly the site of Palazolas.

I hope this brings back some nice memories for you.

NOT ONE, BUT TWO SNOWY OWLS ON THE BACKSHORE, PERCHED WITHIN METERS OF ONE ANOTHER! -By Kim Smith

Golden Eyes of the Snowy in the Golden Light of Sunset

Snowy Owls once again this January drew crowds along the backshore Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Fans were treated to not one, but two Snowies, and for quite a good amount of time they were perched within meters of one another–the paler owl (most likely a male) sat atop the corner of the Ocean Inn and the owl with heavily barred feather patterning (most likely a female) perched at the top of a phone pole.

With the clear distinction between the owl’s feather patterns I think we could name the Snowies–the female, Hedwig (thank you Michele for the suggestion) and the male, Bubo. The scientific name for the Snowy Owl is Bubo scandiacus and the name Bubo may help us remember that fact.

The photos were taken Saturday and I’ll have time to post Sunday’s tomorrow.

Notice how perfectly Bubo blends amidst the surrounding rocks.

It’s no wonder why the Snowies are drawing such crowds. Most owl species are nocturnal; Snowy Owls are diurnal, which means they hunt during daylight hours. It is logical when you think about the continuous daylight of the Arctic, they must be able to hunt during the day. Snowy Owls wintering in our region hunt during both the day and night, depending on what type of prey they are after.

SNOWY OWL WATCHING ETIQUETTE: The following are some helpful tips for watching Snowy Owls. You will get better photographs and you won’t stress out the Snowies.

  1. Watch from a comfortable distance–comfortable for the bird that is. Nothing makes the Owls more stressed than people getting too close.
  2. Please keep children from throwing rocks towards the Snowy or anywhere within the vicinity of the Owl.
  3. Please don’t allow dogs to play near the Snowies.
  4. Slamming doors, radios blasting, barking dogs, and loud mufflers all stress the Snowies.

Hedwig and Bubo have an ability to tolerate some human activity nonetheless, we want to help them survive and protect their time here on our shores. When Snowies are perching, it’s not for our enjoyment (although beautiful) but because they are either resting or on the look out for their next meal.  After all, if they have a good hunting season and survive the winter, perhaps they will return next year!

Fellow photographer friend Dave shared the above photo. You can see the guy is waaaayyyyy too close to Bubo and has caused him to flush.

Snowy Owls have wonderfully expressive faces. Hedwig’s eyes lit up in the setting sun.

Female Hedwig perched in the distance on the far left, male Bubo perched on the corner of the Inn, to the right.

Lots of fun at the State Pier

Had a great time photographing these beautiful ducks on Friday.  They are so cute and unusual.

WINTER sunrise Wingaersheek Beach Gloucester MA boulders low tide looking to Annisquam Lighthouse©c ryan _20180121_072057

I needed a flashlight at first, mostly for the ice, long stretches in the parking lot then frozen ice scoops in the dry sand. I waited for sunrise, returing to spots I’ve favored since I was a little girl, adding glances back in the direction of Wheeler’s Point, where my parents lived, and over picnic boulders and slide pools out to Annisquam Lighthouse.  The light was simultaneously a ring of orange mauve fire and rosy pale violet gray. Lanes Cove Sunset

Ran out for a quick sunset last night.   The sun is setting farther to the left these days so after checking out a few of my usual spots, I decided on Lanes Cove where thankfully the tide was low enough to get down on rocks just before the sun dipped below the horizon!  BLM_3548-Edit-Edit-2

Wonderful fun to see the ice boat racing on Niles Pond. The black lab has had no problem navigating the ice while trotting alongside his boy 🙂

Good Harbor and Magnolia on Thursday

On Thursday with the sun and less wind, Good Harbor had lots of surfers, Stand Up Paddle boarders and walkers taking advantage of the sunshine.  The below paddle boarder was actually in Magnolia Harbor.
