Congratulations?

Thatcher was walking around downtown Rockport with some friends after school yesterday when they were asked to guard a package by a gentleman on Bearskin Neck.  I’m proud of him for knowing that he should call me and make sure that sounded “ok.”  He told me the story, told me he was with two friends, and that they were outside in a public area….  he also explained that the man was leading his girlfriend on a scavenger hunt and that she’d be by within 30 minutes to find that package before moving on to her next surprise.  I made Thatch send me a photo of the package.  It was a swan, with a note,  in a nice little bundle.

Sure as anything, about 20 minutes later, a woman came by, discovered the package, read the note, and continued on her way.  Thatcher decided it felt too creepy to snap a photo of her.   Sigh.

At any rate, kudos to the man for arranging such a fun afternoon for his girlfriend.  He was kind enough to even give Thatch and his friends some money to split for making sure that no one else took off with his swan.

I hope the afternoon was everything that he expected it to be!  Was there a proposal at the end?  I wish we knew!  Are congratulations in order?  I hope so!

I’m not so sure about the duct tape though.

Cool Music Alert: Cables and Lines CD Release Show this Saturday Night

Cables and Lines

Gloucester residents Erin and Andy Luman and their new band Cables and Lines will play a show this Saturday night at MAGMA in downtown Gloucester. The band, which also features Calvin Joss, will release its first CD at the show. So you should go there.

Good Morning Gloucester peeps know Erin Luman because Joey posted about her art skillz here and he once asked if the Lumans should win “most creative family” in Gloucester. I’d vote for them.

People know Andy Luman because of the GMG post here about his previous band, which wasn’t nearly as good as the new band Cables and Lines and was back when Andy was more likely to wear a man bun in his hair like a rock star.

This Saturday night’s Cables and Lines show is at MAGMA, 11 Pleasant Street in Gloucester, from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $10 and you can buy tickets here. Your ticket gets you into the show but you also get a CD and a portion of the profits is donated to the Open Door.

If you can’t make the show, you can hear their music and buy their CD here: www.cablesandlines.com

ADMIRING THE NOT OFTEN SEEN LITTLE BLUE CALICO HERON

Have you seen the Little Blue “Calico” Heron? I had not, until this summer. I thought at first we have yet another species to add to the wonderful world of wildlife found on Cape Ann.  The calico heron is not at all a different species but is the in-between stage of the Little Blue Heron as it loses its first hatch-year white plumage and gains its adult blue plumage.

In the bird’s first summer after hatching the Little Blue Heron is pure white, with just a wee bit of grey at the wing tips. In its second hatch-year, you’ll find the Little Blue Heron in a range of white and blue-gray combinations. By the third summer, the Little Blue Heron’s body feathers are a tableau of rich blue-grey-green with lovely violet maroon neck and head feathers.

During the breeding months, Little Blue Herons are occasionally seen at Cape Ann marshes, freshwater ponds, and along the shoreline. By late summer and autumn they can be found in mixed flocks of Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Green Herons, and Great Blue Herons, feasting on fish and frogs to build a reserve of fat for the southward migration.

The above photo and top photo shows the contrast between the Little Blue Heron first hatch-year, which is flying by a calico second hatch-year Little Blue.

NIGHTMARE ON ROGERS STREET!

For the first time in its history Blue Collar Lobster Co. will open its doors to host a Halloween concert featuring two of the area’s premier local original bands. On Saturday October 27th Pier Ave and Over The Bridge will take the stage for what will be an incredible night of roots, rock, and reggae.

The two groups are joining forces for the evening to send a message to local music lovers. Their message is simple: The local music scene needs more collaboration. “Local musicians need to work together to promote unity and support one another. By doing this we can create a scene that is great for venues and live music fans alike. The North Shore is where we are from, and the artists who call it home are our family not our competition.” As two of the area’s highest drawing local bands the show is sure to bring in live music fans from all over Boston’s North Shore and beyond to show their support for the blossoming local music scene on Cape Ann.

Tickets to the show are on sale now! The event boast’s an impressive lineup of local sponsors, FREE giveaways, a $500 cash prize for best costume, professional sound and lighting display provided by Davis Thurston Productions.

Body Cast, by Azita Moradkhani
Azita Moradkhani was born in Tehran where she was exposed to Persian art and culture as well as Iranian politics, and that double exposure increased her sensitivity to the dynamics of vulnerability and violence that she explores in her work and art-making process. She received her BFA from Tehran University of Art and both her MA in Art Education and her MFA in drawing, painting & sculpture from Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts & Tufts University. The female body, and its exposure to different social norms, is central to Moradkhani’s work. Through her drawings and body castings, she is examining displacement as an unnatural state we experience when we find ourselves insecure in our own body.

Upcoming ART @the Icehouse, Peter Herbert & Leon Doucette

Please mark your calendars:
For Immediate Release:
New Generations of Cape Ann Art: Leon Doucette and Peter Herbert ART@the Icehouse Exhibit Opening

New works by Gloucester painters Peter Herbert and Leon Doucette are featured in a special upcoming Artist Exhibition hosted at the Art@the Icehouse gallery in Gloucester’s “Fort” neighborhood.
“New Generations of Cape Ann Art” opens with an Opening Reception at 5 pm Saturday, October 13, 2018. ART@the Icehouse Gallery is located above Cape Pond Ice Company, Fort Wharf, 104 Commercial Street, Gloucester, MA.
Leon Doucette is a nationally recognized young portraitist and oil painter, who has won recent awards of the Guild of Boston Artists, and an international competition by the American Portrait Society in Washington, DC. Leon received his BFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and serves on the Cape Ann Museum curatorial staff. Leon’s paintings are characterized by soft tonal modeling, diligent brushwork, and often solemn atmosphere.
Peter Herbert most recently exhibited his abstract landscapes at The Jane Deering Gallery and in Annisquam, and will share a new series of land and seascapes examining play of light and color on horizons, and fresh images of Gloucester harbor and Cape Pond Ice’s wharf and Icehouse. Peter studied at the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Students League of New York, with Brooklyn realist Andrew Reiss, as well as master painter David Levine, and locally under mentorships of Erma Wheeler and Gordon Goetemann.
Preparing together for this ART@the Icehouse exhibit at Gloucester’s iconic Cape Pond Ice, Peter and Leon have explored fresh, complementary synergy in their new work and color palette.
Saturday’s 5pm, October 13th Artist Reception is free and open to the public. This special exhibit extends through Sunday, November 4th, with hours Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm, and Sundays from 11 am – 3 pm, and by appointment.
