Schooner Adventure’ Return

And here are two slides I just scanned of Adventure’s triumphant return to Gloucester in 1988 from her second life as a windjammer on the Maine coast – Pat Morss

Schooner Adventure’s former rig

I have been scanning my old Kodachrome slides and came across some interesting photos of Adventure’s sail plan. Consulting Joe Garland’s 1985 book Adventure; Queen of the Windjammers, I find she had topsails when launched in 1926, but spent most of her working life as a dory trawler without topmast. This shortened rig is close to her present appearance. Adventure retired to Rockland, Maine as a prized member of the tourist windjammer fleet in 1954. She was painted white, and and the tall rig was restored. This is how she looked in my first photo from Eastern Point in 1988. The next two photos are 1992 (black hull) and 1993, and the last shows how she looks today after her Gloucester return and restoration. – Pat Morss

The Gloucester Rotary Club has named Patrick Thorpe and Danny Williamson as Paul Harris Fellows, the prestigious award named after the Chicago lawyer who founded the Rotary movement in 1905. SHOUT OUT TO YOUNG CONSERVATIONISTS DIMITRI AND SVETLANA!

Svetlana, Dimitri, and Robert

This amazing family was in the parking lot at Good Harbor Beach. They had collected a trash bag full of garbage from around the lot. Dad Robert explained that because they love Good Harbor Beach so much, and go often during the summer, they wanted to give back.

Our DPW does an incredible job keeping the beach and lot clean however, it’s impossible for any one entity to keep up with the amount of litter that happens on our beaches. It takes a village, and it is people like Sveltana, Dimitri, and Robert that are making a real difference.

*Although I wrote down the names of the kids, somehow the message to myself was deleted. I think their names are spelled correctly, but if not, please write. Thank you 🙂

Scenes from Literary Cape Ann special event at Cape Ann Cinema featuring Rodman Philbrick, Andre Dubus III and Stephen McCauley

Literary Cape Ann presented  a terrific afternoon, Bestseller to Big Screen, featuring Rodman Philbrick, Andre Dubus III, and Stephen McCauley at Cape Ann Cinema 21 Main Street in Gloucester May 5, 2019.

The Toad Hall wheels behind Literary Cape Ann invited Beth Pocock, Asst. Director Sawyer Free Library, to moderate the first half of the program. Literary Cape Ann co-founder Rae Francoeur directed the second part.  The Book Store of Gloucester set up shop to handle book sales. Cape Ann Cinema had trailers queued up and fresh popcorn pop pop popping which was offbeat and endearing. All went off without a hitch thanks to great questions, event coordination/collaboration and three dynamite authors who were  frank, engaging, witty and bright. Make sure to look for the next Literary Cape Ann event.
