Step back in time to 1929 and join us for a day of family fun at Castle Hill!
We’re bringing play back into the Crane Estate with fun activities for the whole family through out the day.
Ongoing activities on the Ground Floor of the Great House will include:
- Card games from the 20s
- Storytime
- Coloring Station with 1920s and Castle Hill Coloring Pages
- Napkin Folding Station
- Servant Interactions around the Ground Floor
In addition, photographer Cristin Gisler will be on-site to do family photos from the roof of the Great House. If you still need a holiday family photo, time slots can be scheduled by emailing: rdonovan@thetrustees.org
Tours of the Great House will continue as usual with Guest of the Cranes running every hour on the hour. (Last tour is at 3 PM.)

So much has changed in our lifetimes…..an understatement that came to the fore when I saw this 1914 New England Telephone ad:
When I was a kid, we were on a party line….for those of you who may not remember, these were shared phone lines. Your neighbors essentially had the same line as you did so you could eavesdrop on their phone conversations and vice versa. You paid a premium for a private line.
When you called someone, you were pretty sure you knew where they were located at that moment but they had no idea who was calling.
A phone number was typically shared by everyone in the household so you had a chat with whomever picked up the call.
You VERY carefully planned “long distance” calls for the cheapest rates because you were charged extra for each call made outside your zone…..and, as referenced in this ad, you could rest easy if no one answered.
Today you can make those Thanksgiving calls anytime you like. When your college kid comes home for the long weekend, your line is no longer tied up making their plans with friends. It’s a wonderful world we live in (mostly)! What else do you remember about phones back in the day?

After the recent October Nor’easter, we lost an over 40 foot Oak Tree that actually split in two and went over to our neighbor’s driveway. What a mess. Yesterday Mayer Tree and Magnolia Tree came and did an amazing job cutting and cleaning up trees. Photos are not so good due to the rain but amazing how careful these tree workers are.
This year we’d like to celebrate the holiday season by coming together and working to give back to our community, we’d love your help! Wellspring, a local charity, is looking for donations to provide families in need with gifts and support this holiday season.
From now until December 6th, we will be collecting donations at our showroom in Gloucester. We’ll also be selling raffle tickets at our holiday party for a chance to win prizes and give back to the community at the same time. All proceeds will be donated to Wellspring. Join us as we come together to celebrate. All are welcome.

Another great event to help you shop local for your holiday shopping
On Saturday, Nov 23, 2019 the Rockport Art Association and Museum will be opening the Cape Ann regions first-ever national fine art show!  The RAA&M National 2019 artwork submissions came from artists across the United States in a diverse number of media: drawing, mixed media, collage, digital art, photography, sculpture, painting, & printmaking. Nationally recognized artists Tom Hughes and Jo Ann Rothschild juried the exhibition, selecting 160 works of art out of nearly 700 entries from most every corner of the country. Entrants ranged from nationally-recognized fine art photographers whose work has been featured in the The New York Times, sculptors whose works have ignited firestorms of controversy, and celebrated painters belonging to the National Academy.
The exhibition has been generously sponsored by the Institution for Savings, and over $7,000 in prize money has been contributed for awarding to outstanding works by a number of public and private entities, including Cape Ann Savings Bank, BankGloucester, Mass Credit Union, iartcolony, and Security First Mortgage Funding LLC.
The RAA&M National marks Cape Ann’s return to national prominence as a center for the fine arts after languishing for too many decades in general anonymity. As well, it marks a bold new chapter in the history of the Rockport Art Association & Museum as this institution leads the charge towards helping restore this region’s reputation as a center for cutting-edge fine art that is relevant far beyond our granite shores.

I asked the UMASS surf club how the Lake Atlantic Invitational competition fared on November 16, 2019 at Good Harbor Beach. The ocean was rather “lake” in the morning and the air a brisk 22 degrees.
“The competition was a huge success! The waves got better throughout the day, and we had a lot of creativity with crossstepping, handstands, and laying down backwards almost like a coffin.” The final results:

“We’re not sure yet if we’re going to try to do these competitions annually or biannually, but keep an eye out for another competition in April, most likely still somewhere in Gloucester. And yes it was chilly, but most of us are used to that weather having grown up in the area, and even the competitor from California did a good job overcoming the cold with help from a nice winter wetsuit.”
