Hello friends,
We are committed to our collective health and are taking direction from the CDC and ServSafe to keep all of us safe.
We are washing, and washing and washing our hands some more.
We are using a CDC approved bleach solution for cleaning tables in between guests.
All tableware has been sanitized through our high temp dishwasher before it gets to you.
Our compostable straws are individually wrapped.
Door knobs and pulls will be wiped frequently.
We have hand sanitizer in all server stations and the restroom.
We are using single use menus and recycling after each use.
This situation seems to be evolving rapidly and on that note, we fully understand that you may have to cancel last minute. We appreciate that and ask that you give us a quick call to let us know. Health and safety come first.

BEAUTY ON THE WING PREVIEW SCREENING POSTPONED
Dear Friends,
The Gloucester Stage Company’s preview screening of my forthcoming documentary Beauty on the Wing: Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly has been postponed until May. We don’t have a set date yet and I will keep you posted.

With deep regret but for the good of the community the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is postponing the March 21st Bach Birthday Concert.
The Mayor has asked that all public gatherings of over 25 people in close proximity be avoided due to the potential transmission of the coronavirus.
We are also postponing the April 19th event called The Endurance of Hope. This will be a narrated concert in commemoration of the Holocaust
presented in collaboration with Temple Ahavat Achim.
Please note that both will be held at a later date when it is again safe for large indoor events. We trust that will be in the not too distant future
and will keep you posted. All advance ticket purchases will be honored.
On a happier note, the 5th season of our outdoor summer series Music on Meetinghouse Green is ready to roll. The opening concert will be on July 10th
featuring the Berklee ensemble BeBop Guitars, with donations in support of Pathways for Children and food available from the Causeway. The festival will
run nine Friday evenings, starting at 6:00pm.

Beyond health and safety conversations with family and friends, at this early week mark, I’m seeing discussions about which industries may be impacted disastrously or pick up. Ditto public services: public meetings will be postponed, but could roadwork ramp up as more people stay home and off the road? One friend canceled a party this weekend, signing off with some black humor – stay healthy and send suggestions for staying cooped up with kids. Another friend sparked a debate about sending students home from college (many untested):
“We are missing a huge opportunity as a Nation. Given that we have barely conducted 6000 tests in two weeks, when compared to South Korea which conducts 20,000 test A DAY! We clearly need to ramp up! Our college kids are healthy, pretty indestructible, and well educated. They could run tests, assist in research, help out in medical settings, even help in transforming hotels or other spaces into medical ready facilities. But we are sending them home, to sit on couches and play video games. Why?” – Linda
Responses back ranged from the difficulties of such close quarters in dorms to alternative approaches in the works (like the Univ. of Washington appealing to grad students to do just that, and Colgate keeping kids on campus).
Healthy wishes to all and feeling grateful for the work that will be undertaken by so many–and at risk– to keep us safe.

The Gloucester and Rockport public school districts have announced they will close all schools from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27.The districts made the decision as the state continues to deliberate on the most effective actions toward eliminating the spread of the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19.
“They are cancelled for two weeks,” said Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, an ex-officio member of the School Committee, explaining that the closure is not because of any presumed cases. “I don’t even have to shut the schools down … But because we want to do an extensive cleaning, there is no way that can happen while children are in school.”

Starting the Day with Calm
I’ve been happy to have a little bit of extra time each morning this week to take a drive and get a little centered before heading off to work. Finn and I watched some happy dogs playing on the beach and Took the opportunity to chat for a little while. I’m glad we did as the day seemed to have snowballed after that quiet start.

Cemetery Stroll Mt. Jacob
It was a beautiful later winter day when I stopped by the Mt. Jacob Cemetery off 133 recently. I had never been there and, since it is not visible by from the roadway, it dropped off my list of cemeteries to walk through. It abuts the Tompson Street Reservation and is easily accessible from 133 though the road in is a bit bumpy. It is small and very well kept and extraordinarily peaceful. The rustle of leaves and the caw of crows which seemed appropriate during my walk was comforting and calming. One lone duck was calling out as if to welcome me.
The Guide to Cemeteries in Essex County Massachusetts notes it has been in operation since 1913, making it one of the newest cemeteries in Gloucester. Indeed, the stones are clearly more modern than in many other cemeteries in the city but they tell the same stories of ancestry and family that fascinate us. Very interesting!
