Whitney Houston ~ We will miss you!

We’ll be watching the Grammys tonight, in part to see the tribute they added at the last minute to honor Whitney Houston, who died yesterday before she could attend the pre-Grammy party hosted by her friend, mentor and Arista Records founder Clive Davis.

For those of you who’d rather go out tonight, you’ve got plenty of choices.  See full lineup here.

Stuff We Love- Breville Juice Fountain Compact Fruit and Vegetable Juicer BJE200XL

When the Mrs and I went to Playa del Carmen one thing that we really loved was that for breakfast and every 30 yards of so there was a joint that sold fresh juiced juices. It was invigorating and a great alternative to the three cups of coffee way I normally would start my days.

The Mrs got us a Breville Juice Fountain Juicer and we’ve been using it daily. I’m not one to eat an apple or orange in the middle of the day so this has been a way to get a bunch of fruit into my system and the drinks are delicious!

Here’s me making one-

Antennae for Design Circa 1930-1940 Dressing Table

Winter is the time of year when I especially enjoy working on interior home improvement projects. This fabulous vintage dressing table and mirror set were found at a local antique shop. I wasn’t planning on a dressing table for my new sewing room/guest bedroom, but after seeing the dressing table —it was going for a song—I made a split second decision and purchased the pair.

Aren’t all the compartments in the drawers wonderfully practical? You can’t find anything made like this in today’s marketplace. I love that it is a very substantial width and height. The original and smaller circa 1930’s dressing table has had a larger custom-made top cut in a whimsical curved design. The curved glass tabletop lends a Hollywood Regency feel to the piece. The chest of drawers needs a fresh coat of paint (or several), but I will have to wait for spring when the windows can be left open to tackle that part of the project. A new length of fabric is needed for under the glass as well. Perhaps a silk moiré in pale watery green or blue as the thick glass has a greenish cast.

For the new skirt, I had a bolt of Ralph Lauren floral chintz on hand, which gives it a rather Nick and Nora meets summer cottage look, but I think too, in the spring, I’ll make another skirt, perhaps this one in sheer white cotton voile or dotted Swiss.

If I can help you with your interior design project send an email or give me a call. I look forward to hearing for you!

Thanks to Joey for showing me how he creates videos in one take. I couldn’t shoot this video in one take as I had to take the skirts on and off, but this is definitely a super fun and streamlined way of creating videos.

I almost forget to mention that inside one of the drawers was a heavy, solid lead engraved plaque-award given to Mrs. William D. Vogel by the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild for outstanding service to the arts. Doing a very quick Google search, I didn’t find too much about Mrs. Vogel, however her father was Ralph Harman Booth, publisher of a large newspaper chain, Booth Newspapers, and Detroit Institute of Art philanthropist.

Quite possibly this lovely dressing table was Mrs. Vogel’s, or her mother’s, Mrs. Harman, or possibly her daughter’s summerhouse dressing table. I would love to know the provenance of the piece.

Another surprise guest musician

TmaxFri

Today’s video features a solo by a mystery guest (hint: local Main Street restaurateur).

If you’ve been following T Max on gimmesound.com this week, you know he’s founder and editor of The Noise Magazine, (New England’s longest running music magazine).

You may not yet fully appreciate him as a singer/songwriter.  Click here to see him on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes talking about his new album Shake and singing some songs from it.

There’s a wide variety of music tonight from Jazz to Rock to Piano Bar to DJ ~ take your pick but get out there!

Thank Heavens Someone is Finally Taking Action

You know who you are.  All those foursquare users that feel it necessary to automatically tweet your every location and when you become "mayor" of the Starbucks on 43rd street or that you ousted someone as king of the portable toilets.  Personal Note:  No One Cares!!!!

If you add a photo of a meal there or of the scene perhaps that would be of some value, but to simply state where you are, think about it, have you ever given a shit when you read someone else’s "check-in" tweet of where they are?  i can tell you that NO ONE CARES.

Finally there is an agency looking out for the welfare of twitter users and their sanity against useless tweets.

Bad Boys Bad Boys What Cha Gonna Do?

Here are some examples of Tweets that should never have entered cyberspace (and I enjoy most of what these people tweet otherwise)-

Who’s counting and why?

TMax3

Why is T-Max counting steps?  Maybe you can figure it out by watching part 2 in gimmesound’s 5 part series on walking Gloucester’s music scene.  If you missed yesterday’s video, you’ll want to watch it to find out what’s going on.  See it here:

Great music around town tonight – get out and enjoy it ~ you can see the full list here.

My favorite Boston Cinematographer Rick Macomber’s “Life In Singapore”

Rick writes-

Having traveled to Singapore many times now and having produced a few shorts on this beautiful city in Southeast Asia, this time I thought it would be fun to interview some friends to see what their take is on the place I’ve grown to love. Since I was not "working" while I was there, I only brought out my camera and gear while eating and hanging where the cool kids hang, I have also thrown in a few shots from previous trips. I wish there had been more time to shoot, but that would not have been fair to the folks I was there to see.
I hope you enjoy it!

Is it Peter or is it T-Max?

TMax2

Watch this first of our 5 part video series where T-Max’s walks Gloucester’s music scene.  In this part 1 video you can see how T-Max got here and watch for his imitation of Peter.

Open mic, funk jam & KBMG tonight.  Get out and enjoy the music!

Muddled Mallard

An atypical chocolate brown duck–possibly a hybrid between a domestic duck and a Mallard–filmed at Wonson’s Cove, Rocky Neck.

Back at The MAC stories

Week two back at the Manchester Athletic Club.  Starting to get my rhythm back and a little more flexibility in my muscles.  The place has really grown with the number of different programs they have.  It’s like a beehive of activity of people all there to get their work-out on.  Much busier now than when I used to go a decade ago.

Kathleen here talks about aging better, something I never really thought about til I turned 40 but now realize how crucial it is as my metabolism slows down.  Basically when you get to be 40 you’re at a crossroad.  You can take action or you can let yourself turn to shit.

Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly

Coming Soon: Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly tells the story of the ubiquitous and stunning Black Swallowtail butterfly.

My new documentary film captures the beauty and mystery of the Black Swallowtail, through all its life stages, and in it’s surrounding habitats. I think you will be amazed and captivated by this garden-variety and seemingly ordinary, extraordinary butterfly!

One of several preferred Black Swallowtail habitats—Gloucester’s sandy wildflower meadow at Good Harbor Beach. The milkweed provides nectar for swallowtails on the wing and Queen Anne’s lace is a food plant of the Black Swallowtail caterpillars.

The Great American Protest Song is Back!

PrisonNation

All week long, gimmesound’s artist of the week Inge Berge, featured his new Sh*t Under Your Shoes video that we produced together.

But no salute to Inge would be complete without featuring his excellent protest song, Prison Nation, which Inge produced into a compelling, poignant music video.  Check it out!

It’s a hoppin’ Saturday night on Cape Ann with 7 artists to choose from — DJ, Piano Bar, Classic Rock, Folk, etc.  Get the lineup here

What did Inge Berge do with all his "old stuff"?

IngeBerge5

Well, he put it on a digital-only album that you can get on-line.  But what Inge calls “old stuff”, we call it an excellent mix of songs from soulful solos to highly produced tracks in Inge’s inimitable style.  Certainly worth a look.  Check it out.

Plenty of music and dancing in Gloucester tonight.  See full lineup

Taping of Bacala Video with Felicia and Sefatia Part 3 From Gianni Gallo and Joe Langhan

Gianni and Joe are the men behind the Taste of The Times Videos at the Gloucester Daily Times Website- this is from them-

Felicia and Sefatia (“the Godmother”) got together to tape a segment on how Felicia’s Grandmother taught her to make a special bacala dish for the traditional Italian meal of the seven fishes on Christmas Eve. This is the third of three parts of the original footage. The entire shoot lasted over 45 minutes, which was edited down to a 10 minute video. (You can see that video at http://food.gloucestertimes.com/video/Baccala-Italian-Style-Codfish.html) Some have asked to see the entire production, with little or no editing. Here is Part 3.
