YMCA Teen Leaders Club presents $1000 donation to Open Door Food Pantry

Joey –

Thank you all for the GREAT coverage on GMG…it meant a great deal to the kids and to me.

Rick

With deep appreciation and many thanks to the great number of you who supported our teens in this effort.

YMCA Teen Leaders Club presents $1000 donation to Open Door

Back in January, members of the YMCA Teen Leaders Club embarked on their annual “Rockathon to Feed Cape Ann’s Hungry” – with each member rocking in a rocking chair for 24-sleepless hours from 8am Saturday through 8am Sunday. Each Y Teen Leader committed to solicit and collect a minimum of 222 cans. From Youth spent weeks soliciting and then collecting donations of non-perishable food items. In order to accommodate prospective donors who might have difficulty carting caseloads of cans, the club established a “three-for-a-dollar” rate for financial donations for Open Door.

Through the efforts of this fantastic group of local youth, more than 5500 cans and other non-perishable food items were earned and distributed to the Open Door, St. Vincent DePaul Society and directly to local families in need.

On February 11th, the YMCA Teen Leaders Club welcomed special guest Julie LaFontaine, Executive Director of the Open Door. After Julie thanks the teens for their consistently strong efforts year after year, club members proudly presented a $1000 donation – the fiscal culmination of the groups’ collections. The YMCA Teen Leaders Club would like to officially recognize our top three solicitors: Colby Ferris-657, Alex Jones-468 & Zach White-293. We would also like to thanks our families, friends, neighbors and the community for such a tremendous outpouring of support for others in need.

Gloucester Twitterers You Should Follow-Sawyer Free Library

Twitter is something I use to search happenings on particular topics.  There are other localorganizations and individuals using twitter also.

I’ll highlight some from time to time.  Click here to check out Sawyer Free Library tweets

Miniature Intershell

Mike Lindberg posted a cool Photoshop effect a couple months ago using a “miniaturizing effect”. In posting my shrimp recipe I thought there might be some people who just got off the boat and did not know where the new Intershell Seafood Market was so I combine two tasks. I may need to work on this a bit but if you click and show “all sizes” you may be able to see me standing in front of Intershell.

Gloucester Day With the Bean – Pottery Making At Art Haven

After chatting with Bobby Ryan and Manuel Simoes at Ryan and Wood Distillery we headed back to Beautiful Downtown Gloucester for an art class.  Art Haven is an awesome place to learn and create and the staff is gifted with patience and ease with kids.  You can tell that David Brooks, Dawn Gadow and all the people working there truly love being with the children and what they are doing.  It obviously isn’t just a job for them but a calling.

All the kids were having a blast and it’s unbelievable how some of these very young children have developed their artistic abilities in the Art Haven program.

We didn’t have an appointment, we just popped in and The Bean started right in making about four different things.   A clay mirror frame, a couple rocks with her initials on them and a clay model of our cat Mr JJ Jinglenuts.

Gloucester Day With the Bean- Cookie And Hot Chocolate At The Lone Gull

Tuesday was a Gloucester Day with the Bean.  After picking her up at shool we headed down to The Lone Gull for a m&m cookie and hot chocolate.

Both of the girls love going to the Lone Gull and while it’s obviously a coffee shop they both call it “The Cookie Store”.

North Shore Magazine Hosting the Incoherent Ramblings of Yours Truly

It’s true, editor Jack Morris has invited me to post on theNorth Shore Magazine website so check out my first post over there-

http://nshoremag.com/world-competitive-eating-north-shore-style/

I hope to bring some fresh flavor to North Shore Magazine, not that it needs it.  If you’ve seen an issue you know it’s high quality through and through.

Hopefully I don’t ruin the brand with my sometimes off color humor, atrocious spelling and hope for the best punctuation.  Hey it’s a 50/50 shot if I put the apostrophe before or after the s isn’t it?
