City Hall Alive Presents- St. Patrick’s Dance

Sarah Slifer Writes In-

Hi Joey,

Here’s a great benefit event for the Restoration of City Hall – the follow up event from the people who brought the Bananas Fashion Show last November. They (Jan Bell, Kathy Slifer, and others from the Restoration Commission) are now producing events under the name City Hall Alive. Can you post this poster please?

thanks, Sarah S

Art work of Frances Ferro Carreiro From Manuel Simoes

Joey

This video is a clip of the art work of Frances Ferro Carreiro (1921-2001) a long time native of Gloucester.

Frances passed away in 2001, but her art still lives on. I did a video for her husband, Nicolas, now in his nineties, last year, and put this short clip to share with Gloucester. Credit goes to Carol Shaw, who did a great job capturing the art. I also believe that the MontserratCollege OfArt has a scholarship program in her name.

The music is by Maurice Ravel “Allegramente”, a favorite of Nicolas.

How long have you lived in Gloucester?
Nearly my whole life – I was born and grew up here. Went away for
college, spent nearly 6 months in England, moved to Denver for a
while, also lived in Manhatten – I never wanted to end up in my home town! But the beauty here and my love for my family convinced me to stay.

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
I LOVE the fall here – great weather and the most
beautiful sunrises and sunsets; plus the foliage.

Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
For me getting away outdoors is getting out in my kayak or simply going for a long walk any time of the year. (I love walking while it’s snowing!!!)
There is a spot on an outcropping at Stage Fort that I used to love, but it’s not secret anymore.

Sunset Rock

SUNSET ROCK

This is our Backyard In The Snow. Great view of Sunset Rock with our Vernal Pond in the Foreground.

Due to enviromental Laws we’re not allowed to do much Lawnscaping other than mow, and trim some bushes.

When the conditions are right the Pond makes a great personal Skating rink.

In the Spring the Peepers and Banjo frogs are so loud you can hardly hear yourself.

In a Dry Summer most of the water in the Pond disappears.  The Pond is still active at that time with Blue Herrons, White Egrets,  Humming Birds,  Dragonflys, Foxes and whatever else can land on and crawl around in the Mud.

It’s a very interesting Place.

Can You Guess Why They Call it Sunset Rock?

Sunset Rock Glows
Guess why it's called Sunset Rock

Amazing to me that a tidal salt water river freezes over as often as the Essex River does.

GMG Poll Question- Vote For The Style Of The Blog

As you know if you’ve been a reader of GMG for any amount of time at all we post a lot of pictures and videos.

The format of the blog is such that the current style only allows us to post pics and videos which are 500 pixels wide.  This bothers the hell out of me because I don’t feel as though people get to see some of the amazing photos in all their glory because of this limitation.  It’s also the reason I go through the extra step often times of providing a link to where the full size photo is hosted for those who might actually want to be able to see the pictures and videos full sized.  To say that always typing out the hyperlink to the larger sized photos or videos isn’t a bit monotonous would  be a lie.

So anyway there is an alternative- changing the look of the blog to one which would support a larger viewing width of 725 pixels wide.  We would gain a lot of screen real estate where the current wasted space in the left hand margin is and we could post larger pictures and videos. I think the typeface might also be a bit easier to read on the newer style.  We would lose the Good Harbor Beach Logo Header up at the top and the light blue borders however.

All of the other features such as the commenting and stuff you see in the right hand column would remain.

The format I was thinking to switching to is the blog format FOB Bowsprite uses.  You can check out her site here to see exactly what GMG would look like except you would swap out her information and links for ours.
