Do You Know? (Reach for the Stars)
Wayward Ziggy mysteriously finds his way back to the flower box at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, this time clothed and with a photo of a teenage boy. I have identified who the boy in the picture is. Do you know who it is? Clue: He is fast becoming one of the hottest young artists on Rocky Neck and was recently interviewed by Joey.

Friends of Gloucester Dog Park Early Fall 2011 Issue Is Out!
Meet Up with Old Friends at the Beach!
Although it’s sad to say goodbye to Summer, the good news is dogs will be welcome on the beaches starting September 15th. Once the Gloucester Dog Park is completed, our canine companions will be able to romp "unleashed" year round!

Top 10 Tips for Your
1st Dog Park Visit
My dog/s has never been in a dog park before. How can I expect them to react? Reactions vary depending on a dog’s nature, their living environment, and age. For dogs that are house-bound or who live in small fenced-in back yards, entering a large area like a dog park and being off-leash can be stressful even with no other dogs. They need time to adjust to the new-found freedom.
1. Make your inaugural visit to the dog park a short one
2. Arrive at a time when there are not very many dogs
3. Walk your dog around the park on the outside of the fence
4. Remove your leash once you enter the first gate

Then and Now: The Enduring Allure of Light in Photography September 10 – October 6 Featuring The Work Of Locals Judith Montferrante and Michael Sief
The Copley Society of Art is proud to host a national juried photography exhibition titled Then and Now: The Enduring Allure of Light in Photography, featuring images selected by famed photographer Joel Meyerowitz. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 15, from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the Copley Society on 158 Newbury Street, Boston.*
Then and Now: The Enduring Allure of Light in Photography features an array of photographic techniques including silver print, ultra chrome pigment print, and platinum print. The use of light as a key element unites the works, which portray a variety of subjects and styles. The artists represented in the exhibition not only demonstrate a talented selection of the Copley Society’s members, but also extend far beyond the organization’s immediate artist community.
Distinguished photographer Joel Meyerowitz selected a diverse group of photographs, including both color and black and white images. Meyerowitz is renowned for his natural landscapes, cityscapes, and perhaps most notably for the moving images taken at Ground Zero. Having celebrated color photography since the 1960s, the photographer has been featured around the world, from the Art Institute of Chicago to the Centre Pompidou in France. In addition, his photographs have garnered international recognition through numerous prestigious awards.
The Copley Society of Art (Co|So), America’s oldest non-profit organization, is committed to the advancement, enjoyment, and promotion of its member artists and the visual arts. The organization, founded in 1879, comprises juried artists who are selected by a credentialed art committee. Co|So provides artists with a gallery for exhibiting and selling their work and a platform for engaging and educating the community.
The show will be on display from September 10th through October 6th. The Copley Society of Art is located at 158 Newbury Street in Boston. The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-6, Sunday 12-5, and Monday by appointment.
* All members will be admitted free of charge, and non-members will be asked to pay a fee of ten dollars to support the gallery’s outreach program.
Please visit our website, www.copleysociety.org , to view images from the full exhibition.
Great Show Tonight
Dear Joey,
You might want to remind your viewers of the Noise 30th Anniversary Party Finale TONIGHT at The Annie — and what a finale it will be featuring Allen Estes, Chelsea Berry, Sal Baglio, Julie Dougherty and T Max.
Whose T Max, you ask? Well, he’s the publisher/editor of The Noise (New England’s longest running music magazine) and a singer/songwriter.
Plus he just moved to Gloucester, thereby proving my assertion that Gloucester is the hub of independent music north of Boston.
T Max has only been here a couple of months and he’s already producing excellent shows. Look for more of them in the coming months.
Hope to see you tonight.

Surprised Again
Gloucester, I have found, is one of those places that is full of surprises. I can visit the same place day after day and, despite its familiarity, be surprised again and again by the subtle differences in light, the sounds of the sea or the harbor and the people working or playing there and the effects of sun and clouds on the mood of the day.
The other day I went down to the State Fish Pier as I do 2 or 3 times a week, sometimes with a clear intent to find a subject to photograph and sometimes just to observe, listen or meditate. This time I think I felt more like the dog in Denise Levertov’s marvelous poem, Overland to the Islands, where “every step [is]an arrival.” Although I had viewed the harbor from this vantage point many times before, I was nevertheless surprised by the clarity of the light, the precision of the ripples and the drama of the low- lying clouds.
I was happy that I always carry my camera.
On the Ship to Shore Radio
Cute – submitted by Sylvia DeBoever (you remember, Sarah Lawrence’s niece from “The Mail Must Go Through”)
On the ship to shore radio:
SHIP: “Please divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.”
SHORE: “Recommend that you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.”
SHIP: “This is the Captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again divert YOUR course.”
SHORE: “No, I say again you divert YOUR course.”
SHIP: “This is the aircraft carrier Enterprise, we are a large warship of the U.S. Navy. Divert your course NOW!”
SHORE: “This is a lighthouse. Your call.”

Executive Director of The Spirit of Bermuda Management and Crew Writes In To Good Morning Gloucester
Greetings from the Spirit of Bermuda Management and Crew!
Bermuda Sloop Foundation would like to thank all of our new and old friends and family in Gloucester for welcoming us with open arms. Prior to sailing to Gloucester, our crew have been hard at work for three weeks conducting our annual maintenance in Belfast and Rockport. We have settled in Gloucester to wait out Hurricane Katia for a few days, which has also given our crew some much needed and well deserved R&R. We would like to thank Brown’s Yacht Yard for being so awesome and accommodating. We welcome anyone who would like to come by for a tour. Once back in Bermuda, we will be back to work conducting our youth program targeting our island’s 13 year olds. We welcome anyone who comes to Bermuda to come find us in Dockyard.
Thanks again for all of your hospitality.
