Did You Know? (Bloody Mary & Lobster Roll Competitions)

Another fun Mug Up was had by all.  An extra special treat showed up when Sista Felicia arrived with her amazing Caramelized Onion and Pear Flatbread Pizzas.  Can you guess whose hand that is reaching into the photo to snag the first slice?  Ed Sawicki from Mansfield, CT has been coming to Gloucester in the summer for 15 years and has been a FOB since the beginning.  He stopped into the Gallery recently to pick up a sticker and a Did You Know? book, and talk about the blog and photography and Photoshop, and then came back for Mug Up.  Irene Wisnewski, previous artist occupant of 77 Rocky Neck, G3 (now Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery) from 1979 to 1999 stopped in to join us.  More about Irene in another post.  We had a special visit from Joey’s own The Bean and Snoop Maddie Mad, who came by to represent and check out Chris Murray’s cool 3d photography with Aunt Felicia.  FOB, Leslie (Young) DeVaney, Gloucester born girl who now lives in Southern Maine but returns to “Gloucester, my anchor” every year, stopped in for a nice visit.  It was so good to finally meet you, Leslie – go home and get painting.  Paul Frontiero, Ed Collard, his daughter Amy and her fiancé Adam, the other Ciaramitaro’s (Charity, James and Laine) were here, as were Paul and Sue (Lovett) Morrison, Dr. Nicole and family, Guest Artist, Dottie Englander, Schooner Adventure’s Peter Souza, Richard and Lois Arnold from the Phyllis A. stopped in for a couple of calendars (one to send to 90 years old Phyllis, who the Phyllis A was named after), Wendie Demuth and more good and wonderful people were here.

Putting out an early announcement of upcoming competitions at the Gallery.  On September 18th, we will be holding the First Annual GMG Lobster Roll Competition, and at the Grand Finale Mug Up on October 2nd, we will be holding the First Annual GMG Bloody Mary Competition (Bob Ryan, Ryan and Woods Distilleries’ Beauport Vodka needs to be part of this).  Mark your calendars now and start working on your entry recipes.  We are also putting out calls for judges.  There are already 3 confirmed judges for the Bloody Mary competition (Wendie “It’s 5:00 pm somewhere” Demuth, Charity “I’m sweet and charming and I don’t drink, but I love Bloody Mary’s” Ciaramitaro, and Ed “No one knows a good Bloody Mary like me” Collard), but we need one more judge.

We don’t yet have any confirmed lobster roll competition judges, except Joey C.)  Now of course to create a winning lobster roll, the lobster should ideally come from Capt. Joe & Sons, not contain foreign objects like jalapenos or other strange ingredients like miracle whip or celery; however, this is a competition, and Joey will not be the sole judge, so feel free to give it your best with whatever ingredients you think make the best lobster roll.  If you believe yourself sufficiently qualified to be a lobster roll judge, please respond with your credentials asap.  There is bound to be fierce competition for these coveted judgeship positions.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11th, ACI-Cape Ann is hosting a weekend series of free public teachings called Meditation for Peace this September 9 – 11 at the Vajramudra Center, 154 Granite St., Rockport. Culadasa and ACI-Cape Ann are offering Meditation for Peace to benefit people of all lineages, faiths, or no faith, who wish to start or improve their meditation/prayer/contemplation practice in order to become more healthy, wise, and helpful people in control of their own minds.

The event is free and open to everyone. Donations are appreciated. No experience is required. For more information on Upasaka Culadasa, please visit dharmatreasure.com. Georgia Kelly Has A Question About A Buoy Off Of Annisquam Yacht Club and Coffin Beach

Can you tell me what happened to the large black buoy that used to be right across from the Annisquam Yacht Club and Coffin Beach?
Way back in the 40’s we used to swim out and climb up the buoy.
Told my grandchildren about it and they went to Wingaershiek Beach yesterday and said it wasn’t there! (they probably thought "the old lady" is a little hoopy!)
Thanks for any info!

Laurence Kent Jones Represents

Laurence Kent Jones represents at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on the day that he took down his exhibit “Proprietary Chaos” at the Rocky Neck Gallery (which I luckily got to see and photograph in the morning before it came down), and just days before leaving for his next assignment in Hong Kong.  Laurence spent the last 4 years in Haiti and will spend the next 3 in Hong Kong.  Although he lives in Gloucester, he doesn’t get to spend much time here, so he really appreciates Good Morning Gloucester for keeping him connected while he is away.   Laurence is Chief of American Citizens Services for the U.S. Consulate.

Second Edition Cape Ann: A Photographic Portrait (NEW!!!)
Alan Murtagh Photographer
Sara  Day Writer

You can feel it in the soft sands of Wingaersheek Beach, hear it in the thundering waves of the Back Shore, and smell it in the crispy, salty air that permeates the region. It’s the heart of a place that beats with rustic beauty. It’s the heart of Cape Ann.
Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, and Manchester-by-the-Sea are the brilliant gems that make the treasure of New England sparkle. From the historic fishing industry to the creative art colonies, Cape Ann is a place like no other. And with its traditional festivals, incredible seafood, overflowing antique shops, and scenic splendor, it’s no wonder the area draws thousands of visitors each year.
Photographer Alan Murtagh has been capturing the beauty of this unique place for 15 years. His images evoke the spirit of Cape Ann in a way that stirs the viewer’s imagination-you not only see it, you can actually sense it.
When you come to Cape Ann, you will discover it’s not just a visit, it’s an experience. And when you leave here, you never really leave, because Cape Ann is a place in the heart.

"Essex County Busting Breast Cancer Initiative" to be held Sept. 14th

image

The “Essex County Busting Breast Cancer Initiative” Offers a Free Presentation on
Lowering Your Breast Cancer Risk at the Rockport Art Association
(Rockport, MA) Learn inexpensive and healthy ways to lower your risk of breast cancer at a free presentation at the Rockport Art Association on 12 Main Street, Rockport. Join us for this lifechanging talk on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 P.M. Essex County residents (especially women between the ages of 40 and 50), will be taught three easy, inexpensive, healthy and effective ways to significantly reduce the body’s ability to develop invasive breast cancer. Admission is free.
This program is part of the “Essex County Busting Breast Cancer Initiative” designed to decrease the incidence of invasive breast cancer in Essex County through education and awareness. The Essex County Initiative is National Breast Cancer Prevention Project’s pilot program, for developing regional initiatives in areas with an extremely high cancer rate.

For art lovers, there will be the opportunity to own an original Charles Movalli oil painting,
which will be on display. The artist generously donated this painting in memory of Carleen
Muniz, a former Rockport Art Association artist member, who died of breast cancer in 2009.
Muniz was mentored by Movalli, and was a talented artist in her own right. Raffle tickets are $25.00 each and the drawing will be held October 23, 2011.
Charles Movalli is the son of artists in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Movalli became an art teacher, influential art editor and writer. But above all, he is a painter. His dramatic brushwork creates the vibrant lighting and sense of movement that has earned this Cape Ann artist dozens of significant awards, a listing in Who’s Who in American Art and memberships in prestigious art associations, including Oil Painters of America.

Tasty and fabulous appetizers will be provided by Grapevine Catering. Wine and water will also be served. Knowledgeable staff from Common Crow will be in attendance as well to present products that are beneficial in lowering breast cancer risks.  The National Breast Cancer Prevention Project, formerly Know Breast Cancer, was founded by Susan Wadia-
Ells, PhD. The organization is focused is on helping women to stop breast cancer before it starts, rather than focusing on detection and treatment. Wadia-Ells’ forthcoming book “Busting Breast Cancer” is based on international research over the past 5 plus years and will change the way the world thinks of breast cancer.
The Essex County Initiative is a project of the National Breast Cancer Prevention Project.
