Cape Ann Painters and Photographers Group

Hi everyone,

Greetings!

This is just a reminder that our regular second Monday of the month meeting will be held at “The Annie”, One Washington Street, Gloucester on Monday, April 9 at 9:00AM.  There will coffee/mingle time from 9-9:30 with the meeting beginning at 9:30 and ending at 11AM.  We will continue with our format of having everyone “check in” for  a few minutes to tell us what you have been working on.

Thanks and hope to see you then.

Alice Gardner

Note: This group that Alice Gardner started is evolving into a really great networking, sharing and fun event for Cape Ann artists, so if you’ve thought about joining us, please do.  You won’t be sorry.  All creative types on Cape Ann are welcome (you don’t have to be a painter or photographer).  Henry Allen and The Annie are great hosts too – thanks Henry.

Surprise guest at Shalin Liu last night ~ another surprise at the Brew Pub tonight

Surprise guest at Shalin Liu last night

Miranda Russell at Shalin Liu last night with surprise guest Inge Berge on guitar (L-R: John Hyde, Joe Kessler, Miranda Russell, Vincent Briguglio, Inge Berge, Leo Ciaramitaro)

Justin Piper’s wife was in labor so Miranda called Inge at about 4pm to ask if he could sit in.  Inge was excellent with some great solos, which proves just how versatile he is (in case anyone ever doubted).  See Inge’s new hit video here.  Very different style indeed!

As of this morning there were 5 tickets left for Miranda’s show tonight.  You can see if they’re still available here.

For the rest of you, there are plenty of other choices tonight (full music lineup here).  Our good friend Allen Estes will be with Dan King & Friends at Cape Ann Brewery starting at 9pm.  He’s just finished a new song.  Ask him to play it.

Beeman School Prepares for the Wizard of Oz

The Beeman Elementary School Chorus presents The Wizard of Oz on Wednesday, April 11 and Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 7:00PM at Beeman School, 138 Cherry Street, Gloucester. All tickets for the production are $5.00 each and will be sold at the door the night of the performance.

Happy Birthday Marty!

You should know that I tried to get Kim Smith to sing Happy Birthday like Marilyn Monroe to JFK for you but the scheduling didn’t work out.

So congrats on another year and thank you for inspiring all of us through your incredible photography and poetry.

It’s an honor to have you on the team!

Thank you from the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market

image

The Cape Ann Farmers’ Market (CAFM) would like to thank everyone who has made our Backyard Growers Program (BYG) such a success. BYG is full for this growing season! Together, we have worked toward BYG’s vision of using backyard gardens as a way for low- to moderate-income residents to meet some of their food needs, improve environmental conditions in neighborhoods, and build community within diverse populations.

More than a traditional farmers’ market with a single focus, CAFM is a comprehensive program that aims to impact multiple points of the local food system. One of our strategies is to create a network of backyard gardeners who are providing for themselves while “greening” urban areas of Gloucester. Participants’ survey results from the past two years indicate that having a backyard garden increased the quantity of fresh vegetables their family ate, saved money on their grocery bills, inspired healthier meal planning, increased outdoor family time, and increased positive interactions with their neighbors. BYG has provided concrete examples of how families can maximize small spaces to grow food and improve the environment in their own neighborhoods.

We have come so far in just a few years—serving 8 participants in our 2010 pilot program to serving 60 participants in 2012. This growth is thanks to our wide network of community partnerships. Thank you to The Food Project staff, J Harrison, Alison Woitunski, and Christian Appel; Food Corps/City Sprouts staff; and the youth D.I.R.T. Crew for partnering with BYG to provide raised bed gardens, logistical support and labor, and garden training.

Entering our second year with The Open Door Garden Project, we thank Julie LaFontaine and all of The Open Door staff for our dynamic evolving partnership and for sharing their space with us for our training program. Thank you to Steve Winslow from Get Fit Gloucester!, Mark Cole from the DPW, and Ann-Marie Jordan from the Gloucester District Schools for helping us with program support and outreach.

Thank you to all of the local businesses that have donated to our program, including Brick Ends Farm, Timberline Enterprises, Wolf Hill Home & Garden, Neptune’s Harvest, Goose Cove Gardens, and Alchemy, and to our funders, Bruce J. Anderson Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, New England Grassroots Foundation, and TD Charitable Foundation.

BYG would not be able to serve our growing number of participants without the support of our volunteer garden mentors, who provide support during the training and growing season. Thank you to Lourdes Bilbao, Grace Cherubino, Maura Cronin, Susie Field, Frances Fitch, Molly Norton, Heather & Rick Fraelick, Keats Gallagher, Suzanne Gosselin, Nome Graham, Patty Knaggs, Susan Nellis, Sarah Rubin, Mern Sibley, Erin Taylor, Susan Wood, Wendy Banks, Jan Klein, Dan DeLouise, and Donna Caselden.

Thank you Gloucester—and don’t forget to plant your peas this weekend!

Crossing the Bar

Crossing The Bar

Sunset and evening star

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar,

When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep

Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell,

When I embark;

For though from out our bourne of Time and Place

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crossed the bar.

Join a Zombie Pub Crawl in Gloucester tomorrow & get $25 to drink with

Our friend Jen Amero is organizing a Zombie Pub Crawl with teams, which sounds like a blast.  Here’s what she says:

The first 6 people on each crawl team get $25 each drinking money. We will meet at Amesbury Sports Park so that one person from each team can be made up as a zombie – if you cannot make it to ASP, we will meet in town at 8pm at Jalapenos for our first drink.  There will be a designated driver from ASP to Gloucester.

Then, in order we will visit Cape Ann Brewing, Dogbar and end at Minglewood. Anyone wanting to be part of the first paid core team (and get the $25pp drinking money) should email jamero@amesburysportspark.net or call me 978-325-0606.

There are only 2 spaces left for paid crawler.  Otherwise, folks can just join us on their own dime as we roll from venue to venue.

Now, if you’re not inclined to zombies, you might check out last week’s gimmesound artist of the week, Miranda Russell at Shalin Liu tomorrow.

And tonight you’ve got 7 great music choices starting at 6:30.  No matter what you like you’ll find it on Cape Ann tonight!  See full music lineup here.

Phyllis Ciarametaro has some nice things to say

Dear Joey,
We enjoy your blog. Joe and I look forward to it every day. The photos of the St. Joseph’s Shrines brought back many wonderful memories.
We were born and brought up in Gloucester. My husband, Joe Ciarametaro, yes, that’s his name, is related to the Ciarametaros who owned the boats Mary Rose and Baby Rose, and the Gloucester Grocery & Boat Supply on Rogers Street. My relatives were the Bertolinos of the famous Italian bread bakery on Commercial Street. My dad, Anthony Tony Bertolino owned the fishing dragger St. Theresa.
Joe’s Great Aunt Francis Aiello, who lived on Summer Street years ago, had a shrine every year when we were growing up. My mother, Rose Chiancola Bertolino’s St. Theresa statue and dining room lamps were always a part of Aunt Francis’ shrines.
We have been gone from Gloucester for many years, but try to visit every summer. We are now living in sunny Arizona, but missing the sound of the fishing boats’ horns, the clang of the buoy bells, and the smell of the salt ocean air. Ciao,
Phyllis Ciarametaro
