Block Party Entertainment Update ~ Correction for tonight ~ Will Hunt’s Excellent Tech Question for the Cowsills

This just in from Block Party Guru Val Markley:
LEE – Touching and uplifting Originals and Sing-along will be at the Mystery Train Stage at 9:30pm.

See complete Block Party Entertainment Schedule by STAGE here.  See complete Block Party Entertainment Schedule by TIME here.

CORRECTION: gimmesound had Inge Berge listed at the Castle Manor Inn tonight.  Inge told us he’s on guitar backing up Toni Ann Enes (check her out – very entertaining), but it’s not HIS gig.  Thanks, Inge for clearing that up.  See tonight’s complete music lineup here.

Last night at Cape Ann Community Cinema, our boy Will Hunt was in the audience as The Cowsills sang their hits, followed by a screening of their new film, followed by Q&A, during which Will asked how they recorded so many voices (6 or 7 parts on many songs) with a 4 track in 1967.  The answer was that they mixed down all the band tracks first, then stood around a single mic, adjusting each singer’s volume by the distance from the mic.  You singers know how hard it can be to keep your part when you’re RIGHT NEXT to someone singing another part.  It takes some serious ear training to listen for the right resonance and maintain it throughout a song in ONE TAKE.  You couldn’t just fix one part.  EVERY BODY had to sing it again if anybody screwed up.

Then Susan Cowsill told us that they would often break out laughing and not be able to stop — kind of like laughing in church, she said.  All in all it was a great night at Cape Ann Community Cinema.  Tonight it’s the screening of Neil Young Journeys followed by a live acoustic set by Forever Young, the Neil Young Tribute Band (get tickets here).

And tomorrow, it’s Rita Chiarelli with a live set followed by her film Music From the Big House.  See video below of her performing These Four Walls from the movie soundtrack

Bring on the Breakfast on Rocky Neck

I’m not big on going out for breakfast like Joey is, but one morning last week after two back to back paddleboarding sessions, I was famished and hightailed it to Sailor Stan’s for breakfast.  Also unlike Joey, I don’t go for the appealing before shots, but instead dive right in and then go for the decimated after shot.  This was a really beautiful and delicious Greek Omelette created by Karen and Wayne.

If You Could Go Back In Time……..

If You Could Go Back In Time Where Would You Go?

My first choice would be in France with the impressionism movement.

My second choice would be the streets of Gloucester that my Dad remembered and talked about often. What’s Yours?

Jerome John (Jerry) Garcia Quote of The Week from Greg Bover

September 13, 2012

“Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.”

Jerome John (Jerry) Garcia (1942-1995)

image

Founder, lead guitarist, and songwriter, Garcia led the Grateful Dead for thirty years, fusing blues, bluegrass and psychedelia to create one of the leading tour bands of all time. Throughout his career he was plagued by ill health, exacerbated by diabetes and heroin addiction. He died of a heart attack while in rehab at age 53. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cherry Garcia ice cream was named in his honor.

Mass Murder Talk

Hi Joey,
"A Forensic Psychiatrist Looks at the Colorado Shooter" is the talk I’m giving at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center on Monday, September 17th at 7pm.
I’m in private practice with my wife Jean on Main Street now, but for 8 years I worked in maximum security and interviewed over 200 murderers, including mass murderers.
I plan to walk the audience through what it’s like to go one on one with someone who’s just killed a lot of people, how you handle yourself, what questions you ask (and don’t ask), how you determine whether someone’s criminally insane and how to detect when someone’s faking it.
The purpose is to raise money for the Cultural Center, with a suggested donation of $5.
Hope you can put this in your blog.
Thanks!
Rory Anscombe

Screaming wild wind and water in my hair and face . . .

Had an amazing opportunity to go sailing Monday on Tom Cox’ trimaran TRIAD, which Tom has owned and raced for 20 years.  It was pretty windy, chilly and overcast with little bits of sun breaking through on occasion to scatter shards of light across the water.  The company, boat and experience was wonderful.  I didn’t take my camera for fear of water damage, and with all the spray I got covered with, I’m glad I didnt.  We sailed from Wonson’s Cove on Rocky Neck to Boston and back in 2 hours and were going 22.3 knots at the fastest.  Tom said it was the fastest TRIADhad gone this season.  It was quite an exhilarating trip.  Also aboard were Mary Rhinelander and Mike Lipton who I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know. Thanks Tom.

Quite a bit different from my peaceful little Cape Ann SUP paddleboarding excursions around the harbor.

Here are some facts about TRIAD:

Model:Newick Creative

Designer:Dick Newick, the internationally renowned multihull pioneer and designer, has designed many champion trimarans including Phil Weld’s GULF STREAMER, ROGUE WAVE and MOXIE.

Length:42′

Beam:28′ 6″

Rig:Sloop rigged 53′ carbon wing mast, with 8′ bowsprit, 940 square feet of working sail.

History: Designed as a racer/cruiser, TRIAD was purpose-built for the Route de Rhum single-handed trans-Atlantic race in 1982. Featuring cold molded mahogany/ WestTMconstruction by Marc Le Jeloux of Trinite sur Mer, St. Philibert, France, she is strong and seaworthy.

Racing Record:

1983 – 1989:Campaigned extensively in the Caribbean multihull circuit. Consistent winner in the Heineken Regatta and Trade Winds races.

1992-1993:Purchased and outfitted by Tom Cox.

1994:Black Dog Dash: Elapsed time trophy

1995:New England Multihull Association Season Champion

1999: Marblehead-Halifax: First place

1996: Dismasted enroute from Bermuda to Newport, RI. Subsequently salvaged and returned to Gloucester, Mass. for refit following a spectacular rescue of her crew by the cruise liner, Royal Majesty.

Speaking of videos, perhaps you missed the Blues Festival last month.  In case you didn’t know, we spent the day live blogging videos from the festival.  And now we’ve organized them in one convenient place — see here.  Below is one of my favorites by Queen of the Blues: Shemekia Copeland when she walked the crowd and sang without a mic!

If you’re looking for some more great Blues, go see Canada’s Queen of the Blues Rita Chiarelli LIVE at Cape Ann Community Cinema this Saturday at 7:30pm following a special screening of her movie Music From the Big House (see trailer below).

9/11 My Experience From Fred Bodin

9/11 My Experience

The World Trade Tower, my first impression.

And from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

WorldTradeEastRover

When I went to the top observation deck, this is what I saw. The Brooklyn Bridge, which is a subject of one of my posts, is on the lower right.

I always get a little choked up on September 11th, since both my father and I were born on Manhattan Island, we lived nearby, and I lost some high school friends in the towers. My cousin Kate, who lives on nearby Staten Island, remarked to me about driving to her restaurant in Mid-Town Manhattan after the attack, that so many young people died that day. Many of them worked on the floor below where I took this photo from, which was the restaurant. May God Bless them all
