Residents Reminded to be Vigilant about Protecting Themselves from Mosquitoes

Residents Reminded to Be Vigilant about Protecting Themselves from Mosquitoes
Cape Ann, Massachusetts.
In light of the growing number of animal and human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) the State Public Health Department increased the risk level in all communities from low to moderate.  Moderate means that multiple cases of human disease caused by EEE or WNV are moderately likely at this time. For more information on how risk level is determined visit:  http://westnile.ashtonweb.com/index.asp

Some communities in which mosquito samples have tested positive for WNV or EEE have made the decision to conduct spraying of pesticide to reduce the risk to people.  The aim of spraying is to lower the overall mosquito population and reduce numbers of infected mosquitoes in the affected areas.
Mosquito spraying reduces, but cannot completely eliminate, infected mosquitoes. Therefore, it cannot eliminate the threat of mosquito-borne illness. That’s why it is very important for residents to take personal precautions against mosquito bites.
Peak times for mosquito activity are from dusk to dawn. Reduce outdoor activity during this time if possible. Use mosquito repellent any time you are outdoors, but especially during peak times. And remember, being outside even a short time can be long enough to get a mosquito bite. If weather permits, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks. Use mosquito netting on baby carriages or play yards when your baby is outdoors.
Keep mosquitoes out of your house by making sure screens are repaired and tightly attached to doors and windows. Prevent mosquitoes from breeding by removing standing water from places like wading pools, recycle bins, and flower pots, and changing water in birdbath, wading pools or other long term containers at least every 4 days.   Mosquitoes can begin to grow in any puddle or standing water that lasts for more than four days. Water in one old tire can breed thousands of mosquitoes.
You can learn more about how to protect yourself at www.mass.gov/dph/wnv or any of the Cape Ann town websites.

Who is Yancey Strickler and why are Chelsea Berry and I so grateful to him?

I met Yancey Strickler in October 2009, when we were on a panel together at the CMJ Music Festival in New York City talking about the future of music.  Having been a rock critic for the past 8 years or so, Yancey described himself as the Eeyore of the music business, with gloomy predictions for it’s future.  I, on the other hand, was optimistic, pointing out that yes the music business is changing — it’s changed dramatically several times over the past 100 years.  But one thing remains constant: people love music.  We crave it.  Most of us couldn’t even imagine a world without it.  If anything, our insatiable appetite for music is on the rise.

Little did I know that Yancey’s ability to channel his pessimism would revolutionize the music business so optimists like me could once again fall in love with new music.

A few months before we met, Yancey had co-founded KickStarter, a funding platform for creative projects that helps artists like Chelsea Berry raise the money she needs to make her new record.  This new funding model has revolutionized the music business more than any other development since the dawn of the Internet.  Don’t take my word for it, see what cranky music business pundit Bob Lefsetz says about it here.

On Tuesday, something momentous happened: after a tremendous push on her part, Chelsea Berry reached her KickStarter goal (but you can still contribute and get even more good stuff for doing so — just click here).  She IS going to make that new record with her new band that all of us really want to hear.  Here’s a taste of what to expect:

Perhaps Chelsea doesn’t fully realize that she’s also helping to build a new music world where musicians and fans rule — not the multinational corporations that bought up the labels and killed the intensely creative music business we all grew up with (baby boomers, that is).

Congratulations Chelsea — and thank you!

Don’t you wish you could just go out and see Chelsea and her band tonight?  Well you can’t, but you can help the guys in Runaround celebrate some birthdays at The Rhumb Line tonight — that’ll be a rockin’ party.

Indeed, there are nine excellent live music choices tonight.  Check out all the live music in Gloucester here.

And, if you’re near a TV at 1:30pm today, catch the multi-talented Brian King on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.  It was supposed to premiere on Wednesday on Cape Ann TV Channel 12, but technical difficulties prevented that.  You can also catch it on Sunday at 6pm.

This Weekend At Cape Ann Brewing

We’re very excited about this weekend. Friday we’ll be tapping three new beers. The Joey Rocks Milk Stout, Oktoberfest and our annual Homeport Honey Pale Ale. That alone should be enough to get your blood flowing but we’re also going to be having our first Oktoberfest party on Saturday night, with a special Oktoberfest menu all day and F-Bomb tearing down the house at 9pm. There isn’t a better place to be this side of the Munich on Saturday night so make sure The Pub is in your plans!

What You See When You NightSUP

http://web.mail.comcast.net/service/home/~/IMG_2647.MOV?auth=co&loc=en_US&id=477396&part=2

This is a daytime video Tyler from Cape Ann SUP took by the Boulevard yesterday.  In the NightSUP photos below of Evelyn Howe and your’s truly, although you can’t see it in these photos taken by Violet Gray, we were encompassed by thousands of little fish which actually leaped up onto our boards and feet trying to escape the gang of stripers that were hunting them.  Pretty amazing to experience the drama of ocean life up close and personal like that, especially in the dark.  The fish seemed to be telling each other to “go into the Light”.   It was particularly bizarre paddling through a thick stew of live fish, hearing and feeling them beating against your board and paddle, and having to keep pushing them off the board so they could either swim free and live or end up dinner for a striper.  It is getting late this season for people to try this for the first time, but if you have done SUP and haven’t done a NightSUP, you owe it to yourself to experience it.  It is a trip.  The air is getting chilly, but the water is still warm.

It’s music, food & festivals in Gloucester this weekend

Continuing with my interest in starting the weekend on Thursday, I’ll be at the Y Taste of Cape Ann to benefit the Y’s teen, camp and childcare initiatives.  Get tickets here or just go to the Cruiseport at 6pm for food & drink from some of Cape Ann’s best restaurants, along with live music, cooking demonstrations, raffles, door prizes and more.

John wants to see the Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest (he loves We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions) at Cape Ann Community Cinema that starts at 7:30pm followed by a live set by the all-female Queen Tribute band Gunpowder Gelatine.  We’ll try to get to both.

Nine great choices for tomorrow (Friday).  See Friday’s live music lineup here.

Saturday is family festival day with the Captains Courageous Festival featuring live music at Gloucester’s UU Church and the Lanesville Music Festival starting at 1:30pm with two of my favorites, Pete Lindberg at 5:30 and Bill Gleason at 7:30, then becoming a HUGE dance party at 8:30 featuring the great KBMG with special guest J.B. Amero.  WOW!  See the full festival music lineup here.  And look at their cool poster below:

On Sunday, Celtic music fans can catch our friend Michael O’Leary TWICE in one day, on the Lannon & at the Dog Bar.  See Sunday’s live music schedule here.
