Updated:A Note About Running Races On Cape Ann

Yesterday we decided to use one of our Dinner Dealer coupons and grab lunch before the City Hall Fundraiser. It was 12:30 and we decided upon Cape Ann Brewing. Walked in and it was packed to the gills with runners who had just finished the Twin Lights Half Marathon. We waited a bit as people continued to file into the joint from the race, runners and people who had gone to support runners in their half marathon.
We ended up leaving and heading to Lat 43 which was packed as well.  Nice to see these places doing well.

There is nice economic impact from these races.

Update 5/8 from Phil Scannell:

Hey Joe, I also noticed the town was a buzz last Sunday we stopped into Captain Carlos and it was hopping at 2 pm then we walked down to Latitudes and that was jammed and I got to thinking –I went by stagefort and couldn’t see any visible damage on the grounds and I hope they have not forced the fall bike race off with all the complaining about the damaged grass.

Best Phil

Dave says,

It’s a busy one, so let’s get goin’!
This Thursday at the Rhumbline I’m proud to present the one  and only Chris “Stovall” Brown. Born of Titans, raised by wolves and lowered by hydraulics, Mr. CB is up there on the top of the blues world, having toured with the likes of James Cotton or is Jerry Portnoy?  Who can remember? He sings, he plays killer guitarrh, he’s a blast! I love working with him! Gush, gush gush. Now add the cracklings of that sartorially-challenged eggbeater, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris, and myself, and see what our special musically enhanced interrogation techniques can do for you!

And Saturday nite, I’ll be at Captain Carlo’s flailing away with the HooDoo Revelator Band, playing all your top  forty or fifty favorite blues tunes at extremely high volume. I’m gonna wear earplugs, you should, too. But seriously, it’ll be fun to dance to.
Now Sunday, from 6 to 9, for something completely different, I’ll be at Glenn’s Cool Bar in Nbpt. with the marvelous vocallist Ms. Mari Martin. It’s Mother’s Day! Come celebrate. I get tired of repeating myself, but there’s a whole other world over that bridge, and you oughta czech it out. It’s an awesome  restaurant, just ran into Glenn hisself at Nordstrom Rack, looking for size 14’s.

Local Drug Investigation Nets Arrests

On May 6, as a result of an ongoing drug investigation, members of the Gloucester Police Department arrested Tobias Ward, 34, of Dorchester, and Latrell Ayers, 28, of Gloucester. Both men were charged which possession of class B substance (“crack” cocaine) with intent to distribute. , along with other non drug charges. While conducting surveillance at Grant Circle, police observed Ward and Ayers in the area of Friendly’s Plaza. When Ward observed Police, he began driving erratically, driving up and over sidewalks and scraping against telephone poles, in an attempt to evade. A GPD cruiser was able to safely stop the vehicle a short distance later. A subsequent search ensued, and narcotics were found in the vehicle. Ayers was quickly detained after he exited the vehicle . He was charged with the above drug offenses and resisting arrest, operating to endanger, unlicensed operation, child endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage. At the time of the stop, Ward’s vehicle was occupied by the vehicles owner, Charlene Whitt, of Dorchester and her 4 year old daughter. A record check of Ward revealed that he was unlicensed and was wanted by the states of Louisiana and Texas on outstanding arrest warrants. He is currently being held pending extradition proceedings. Gloucester Police was assisted in this investigation and arrest by the Massachusetts State Police and the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms).

Hello everyone!
Wednesday, May 8th
Special Guest:  ALLEN ESTES!

No contest… we’re talking about Cape Ann’s most prolific poet
and songwriter.  But, of course, what goes along with all that is
a generous, personal giving of himself each time he performs.
Beautiful, insightful music and lyrics pour from his heart and
fill the room.  But what greets you is the kind and gentle soul
from beneath.  Mama taught him real good, right from wrong’s
my guess.  Please say hello to my good friend, Allen Estes! ~ Fly

Brace Cove At Eastern Point Update From Gloucester Ma Chief of Police Len Campanello

Hi Joe,
Just to update your readers. We had a tragic event take place last evening just after 5pm. 2 individuals, a male and female (now identified as Evelyn Howe, 46, of Gloucester and David Machado, 49, of Rhode Island) were near the water at Brace Cove at Eastern Point when the sea apparently swept the male into the water, followed by the female. The weekend had brought us strong winds that had churned the sea up with heavy swells and apparently the two were caught off guard (we are still investigating this accident). The Coast Guard and Gloucester Police Boat were launched within moments of the 911 call and the two were found in the water, face down at approx.5:53pm. The Police Boat was recently refitted with new, more powerful engines, had it’s bottom hull resurfaced, and we had installed a FLEER heat signature identification system. This allowed us to reach the area of the accident, find the individuals and speed them back to land much quicker than our abilities had been in the past. The individuals were spotted in the water by GPD Officer Chris Frates and Officer Anthony Giacalone. While lifting the two out of the water, the Coast Guard simultaneously manuevered along side the GPD boat and boarded with two of their officers who performed CPR and lifesaving measures while we sped back to the Coast Guard Station and awaiting medical personnel. Despite the lifesaving efforts of the Coast Guard, Gloucester Police and Fire Departments and personnel at Addison Gilbert Hospital, they were unable to be resusitated.

This is a tragic event for the families of the two victims as well as the community. A very hard lesson from the sea that, while enormously beautiful and majestic, should always be approached and enjoyed with respect and extreme caution, as the ocean follows no rules or schedule and its unpredictability can cause this type of tragedy. Thanks and please keep the families of these two victims in your thoughts and prayers.

Audrey Hepburn Quote Of The Week From Greg Bover

May 4, 2013

“You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him.”

Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)

image

Born in Belgium to an Austrian father and a mother from the royal family of the Netherlands, Hepburn studied to be a ballet dancer before beginning her cinema and stage career. Her films include Gigi, Roman Holiday, Charade and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She is one of a handful of people to have been awarded a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar. Famous for her elfin good looks, her collaboration with designer Hubert de Givenchy set the style for women’s high fashion in the 1950’s, and helped to popularize the iconic “little black dress.” In later life she devoted herself to work with UNICEF and was recognized for her commitment with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.
