Cyclocross 2013 From Paul Boudreau

Hey Joey,

wanted to share this short video. Some guy from New York made this amazing video of the race. I know there’s a lot of artists in town and they would appreciate how beautiful the Park looks in this:

Also some amazing shots from a website in Australia:

The More Things Stay the Same…

Manchester-By-The-Sea – Go away for a few days and low and behold things which were thought to never change are changed! After moths of planning, the owners of 7 Summer Street, in Manchester by the Sea, alongside Crosby’s Market, have started renovations. Gone first was the laundramat on the first floor, and now with the building empty it has been cleaned out of all offices too. Coming is new office and retail space in what I am told is a more “shingle style” exterior. Should make a great upgrade for downtown Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Allen Estes Band Larcom Theater, Beverly MA Saturday, October 5, 2013

FLY (Nashville Thumb) (2)

This is not a review.  I would never presume to critique any single one of the great musicians we have here on the North Shore.  Let’s think of it more as a message to those out there who figure they’ve seen Allen Estes perform a number of times, and thus may have passed on tickets for this wonderful Beverly show.  In a nutshell… too bad for you!  Forget that the historic Larcom Theater is a fully restored, gorgeous facility with hand-painted tin, beautifully designed curtains, world-class stage lighting and, well… the list could go on and on.  Forget that the place is virtually next-door.  Forget it all.  This was about a truly incredible songwriter, centerstage at a venue which absolutely captures the nuance of his lilting voice and intelligent, heartfelt lyric.  The sound (under the direction of Will Hunt) was nothing shy of spectacular, with its focus exactly where it should be – the lead voice.  Allen’s words were clear as a waterfall.  His songs could be heard as they’ve never been heard before, and appreciated for the finely crafted works of art that they are.  But there was an unexpected knockout punch that came on with subtlety… and that was Allen’s masterful orchestration of the entire set.  Starting the show solo, he gradually, one by one, eased players onto the stage until ultimately finding himself backed by five of the finest musicians New England has to offer.  I cannot for the life of me think of any place in the world I’d rather have been on Saturday night than right down the street from us all (not “up the line”, which makes everyone think it’s far, far away when it’s really not) at the Larcom Theater, 13 Wallis Street, Beverly, MA.

David Brown: slide dobro/elec. guitar/vocals

Matt Leavenworth: fiddle

Steve Burke: keyboards/vocals

The Donnelly Sisters and Our Own Donna

How to weave this into a story that makes sense? Donna Ardizonni came in, followed by three blonds. No, they didn't want to visit the Crow's Nest, but they wanted to share yesterday's family wedding, which was held at the Elk's Club on Bass Rocks. L-R: Donna (GMG), Alicia Ressler (baby of 8 siblings, of Brier Neck), Jane Alexiadis of Berkley, CA (self-named "the swarthy one"), and Sheila Donnelly of Oakland, CA. Neither Donna nor I know these people.

We had so much fun interacting. In fact, the sisters got into a rivalry to see who could email me photos first from their cell phones. The "Swarthy One" in the middle claimed victory! In my opinion, they're all winners. As they left, I stated: "You came in strangers. But we're strangers no more." Big hugs all around. Our Donna too.

Over 200 homemade whoopee pies and cakes were served at the Elk's Club reception. Who are these wonderful people? I can see that they're caring, generous, and loving.

Getting down to brass tacks, this is what it's all about: The marriage of their niece Theresa to Victoria, both of Jacksonville, Florida. I have been to the Elk's Club twice this year, both times for memorial services to say "Goodbye." It's very comforting for me to report on a joyous event that says "Hello," and for Life.

Nothing Soft about the Soft Opening of The Studio Today

studio opening

A few shots of the amazing soft opening of The Studio Restaurant today on Rocky Neck.  The place is gorgeous.  Dennis Dyer, his contractor and staff have done an amazing job transforming a Rocky Neck landmark and historic site into a first class restaurant experience, and don’t appear to have spared any expense in doing so.  If you missed the soft opening today, you still have another chance before The Studio closes for the season.  Next weekend (Columbus Day weekend), The Studio will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 – 8:00pm.  It will be buffet style service for a minimal charge of $10, plus cash bar.  If you’re into sports, there are two large screens for your viewing pleasure at the bar.  Even the spruced up empty deck beckons us in anticipation of next year’s summer fun on Rocky Neck.

Another Cruncher on Main Street

No, not another accident in my neighborhood! This happened less than 2 hours ago. A 2001 VW came down Center Street and wasn't able to stop before hitting this car. No injuries. I was told that the Honda may have a broken rear axel, which could mean it's totaled, but it was driven away to it's driveway in East Gloucester.

Here's the owner of the Honda that was hit, Robin Vaneck with her daughter Sophia. She just had her hair done at the West End Salon by Diane, who has cut my hair for the past 20+ years. What was amazing about Robin is that she wasn't bummed about the unfortunate accident. She smiled and had a positive attitude the entire time. Look at the photo: Daughter like mother? I'd say so.

Liz Gerstein Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hey Joey,

I am sending you a post I made on my new facebook page.  It’s a page for food, drink and travel.  The post is about Gloucester and your blog, so I only felt it fair, to send it along to you.  In the next couple of days I hope to be posting and reviewing the rest of my short trip to Gloucester a few weeks ago.  The original post is found here – https://www.facebook.com/confectionsbyliz?ref=hl

BTW, it was nice to meet you and I do hope to send you a picture with representing with the sticker soon.  I was going to take one out at Valley Forge but its closed right now.  My husband said the backyard was just too boring.

Post –

Ok, so I am so far behind in posting. I really need an extra couple of hours in a day to get everything I would like to get done. So, from Boston we headed north to Gloucester, MA. I have to say a few things, it’s a little slice of heaven on earth and if you have any interested in the area, or you want to see beautiful photography and many times have a good laugh; you have to check out the blog Good Morning Gloucester. Lots of information and lots of fun!
Joey C. and all his contributors will keep you up to date with what is happening in the region and post breathtaking pictures. You can also check out some area webcams. There are polls, videos, podcasts, general information about the area and rants that have made this the best blog out there – check it out! As for Gloucester, it is a great place to go. Great food, great entertainment, too many festivals to name, really friendly people and views that are just simply amazing.

Join Kate Tarlow Morgan at the Gloucester Writers Center on October 9th and November 13th from 7-9 pm in two workshops on the idea of Proprioception. Less of a class and more of a lab to explore an “approach” the workshops will delve into both poetic and physiologic arenas through demonstrations and practice of proprioception as neurological response and readings of Proprioception, as the text by Charles Olson. These workshops hope to be ongoing so as to build a language together and ‘unclose’ the subject. Bring Comfy clothes, a notebook and Olsen’s Proprioception. (If you can’t find it, we can make Xeroxes). BYOB or a snack to share. RSVP’s would be appreciated for spacing purposes: katetarlowmorgan@gmail.com or call Kate at 917-399-7468.

Founded in 2010,The Gloucester Writers Center’s mission is to preserve, promote and celebrate Cape Ann’s rich literary legacy and to encourage writing and citizenship in the belief that all voices count.  For more information about GWC go to gloucesterwriters.org.

Colleen Apostolos Does Murals

Colleen creates beautiful children’s murals.  Here’s one she did for my beannie.  Best part is when she listens to what the child would like and they interact so the children take ownership of what is being created.

Thanks so much Colleen.  (She also teaches children art classes at Island Art and Hobby)

Jim Clyde Has Some Nice Things To Say

Good to see you last night at the “Taste of Gloucester”!   The photos came out great!

I have to tell you that the work you do to promote the cultural, artistic and business enterprises around Cape Ann is invaluable and incalculable!  As a small example, today I’m meeting a friend at Mamie’s for lunch (again!)… I would NEVER have know about that great spot without a head’s up from GMG!

Keep up the good work!  ….(and thanks again for posting my Scottish blurb!)
