My View of Life on the Dock
Captain Amanda, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

As Joey said, these kids loved their 5 day ocean voyage. And it’s great to be home again.
Before talking to the kids I was expecting them to be dying to get off the ship as it was basically 5 days of cloudy rainy weather but to my surprise they were all in great spirits and it was quite apparent that they had made some serious friendships. One of the kids when asked about the wet conditions they said proudly “it’s sailors weather”! They met as strangers just 5 days prior but became shipmates for life. The videos tell the story and the first one will be posted at 10AM.

The Crew pulled into the GMHC this afternoon, luckily I was at the Farmer’s Market and was able to fly down and catch them as they pulled up to the dock. I have tons of pics and video to share with you over the course of the next week. Sharon will be sailing also and get the on hands pics only you can get while at sea.

We took this from Hammond Castle about 45 minutes after they pulled away from the dock
This is Jessica Blazewicz with her grandparents.
We have had some news of our sailors on the Spirit of Massachusetts and would love to share it with the community. The piece is the first installment of the log for their first day. It was written crew member/camper Jessica Blazewicz and sent to us by Captain Amanda this morning.
Here it is:
“The day began as the students began to show up at the dock. At first, it was awkward and everyone was nervous. Within the hour, however, everyone had found at least one person with whom they could relate. Skepticism of the weather did little to damper the excitement that lay before everyone. Proudly the crew boarded the vessel, their new home, and thus the voyage began.
The first thing to do was to go over the basics of running and caring for the ship. Before even leaving the dock, an hour or so was spent with a tour, exploring and socializing. As soon as the basics were established, it was finally time to leave. As parents waved and yelled their farewells, we looked not back but forward.
With everyone sorted into shifts, it was quite easy to manage the ship. Even though a fog had covered the sea and the chill of the wind cooled us, we were all very happy. As we got farther and farther from the shore, the waves grew bigger. Never did they reach any height to worry about. A few of the crew had already begun to feel the butterflies.
As the day flew by, everyone began to ease into the ways of the ship. Many of the crew were surprised to realize that balance on the land meant nothing over the water. After a fun-acational lesson, we were all delighted by cook Sarah-Renee’s delicious lunch of corn chowder, BLTs and PBJs .
Later we decided to head to Stellwagen Bank where we sure we would see some whales or porpoises. Unfortunately, when we arrived we were disappointed to find nothing but crashing waves and clumps of seaweed.”
The Gloucester Museum School is offering 20 bunks aboard the Spirit of Massachusetts to sail with local Captain Amanda Madeira from SailGloucester into Sail Boston. We will also offer a limited number of daysail tiockets for the days of the 8th and 9th. On Sunday a group of kids gathered on the dock behind the Heritage Center for the adventure of a lifetime! They were taking a 5 day trip on the Spirit of Massachusetts using the ocean as a classroom.
Tall ship sailing involves teamwork, adventure and strength of character. This is the platform off which the kids and crew will explore the sea. This summer Gloucester Museum School Project Adventure Summer Camp is offering four opportunities for campers to embark on a fantastic voyage of discovery!
Thirteen year old Gloucester student Jessica Blazewicz will be writing log entries for the trip and sending them to us to share with our readers. Watch for upcoming posts on this incredible adventure!

This morning the International Dory Races are being held. There is a pancake breakfast at 8 am at Gordon Thomas Park between 3 Lanterns and Steve Connoly’s for $8. All of the proceeds go to the International Dory Race operating costs. It is a great event, a great tradition, and a whole lot of fun. pancake breakfast is being put on by exemplary Gloucester citizen Ringo Tarr who puts together an incredible number of fun events for our community.
Races are being held right after the breakfast.

Hi Joey,
I thought I’d let you know about what we are planning for next weekend on the Lannon. You probably know about the New England Pirate Faire, being held at Stage Fort Park on Saturday and Sunday. To tie in with what they are doing, we are offering Pirate Sails on the Lannon.
Saturday and Sunday morning we are part of the action at Stage Fort Park . We are sailing from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and will have NEPF pirates onboard. Costumes are encouraged. There will be cannon fire involved as we join the action at Half Moon Beach. We can’t tell ye too much, or we’d have to kill ye! Aarrgh! All ages are welcome on this sail. $25/kids, $37.50/adults.
On Saturday night, from 7:00-9:00 we are hosting a Pirate Ball on the Lannon for Pirates 21 and older. Costumes, prizes, grog, NEPF Pirates and lots of pirate fun for sea dogs and saucy wenches. $50/adult includes a ration of grog. We are hoping people will enjoy the fun at Stage Fort Park , grab a bite to eat at the Block Party downtown, then join us for more Pirate antics at the Pirate Ball. Aarrgh!
Reservations are suggested. Info is at http://schooner.org/tel/feature.htm or (978) 281-6634.
Thanks for helping us get the word out.

National Trust for Historic Preservation Awards Gloucester Adventure, Inc. A Preservation Grant from The Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation
Grant Will Go Toward Marine Architectural Services
Gloucester Adventure, Inc. was awarded a $6,000 grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation from its Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation. The seed grant funds will be used to to support marine architectural services needed to complete the restoration of the Schooner Adventure and obtain USCG Certification as a passenger vessel.
Specifically, funds will support development of final tonnage reduction plan, updating hull lines, inclining test, intact and damage stability analysis, and submissions to USCG.
“These funds provide the foundation for important preservation projects across the nation”, said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “These grants go toward protecting the places that tell our story and they often trigger other preservation projects, further bolstering efforts to protect America’s heritage.”
In 1994, the Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation was created from a generous grant from the Favrot family in honor of the 80th birthday of Texas preservationist Johanna Favrot. The Johanna Favrot Fund fosters appreciation of America’s diverse cultural heritage, and preserves and revitalizes the livability of the nation’s communities by saving historic environments. The National Trust for Historic Preservation distributes a total of $50,000 annually from the Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation. Once a year, Favrot Fund grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 are awarded to nonprofit groups and public agencies. Grants must be matched at least dollar for dollar with public or private funds.

Carl Johnson, a retired teacher from Boston, took these great shots of Ernestina coming into Boston harbor to Rowes Wharf last week. Carl said, “I have had wonderful memories with my students and myself on the Ernestina. I want that memory and experiences to last for as long as I can.” Carl, here’s to building new memories on her! Yesterday Gussy Sanfilippo and Billy Edmonds swung by the dock along with Billy’s son Kyle and FOB (friend of the blog) Frank Ciolino’s son Joey.
We took a row around the South Channel, had a quick race on the dories and talked to Gus about predictions for fish prices with the June 1st fishing grounds area opening. The first part of the videos will air this morning at 8AM
