Schooner Adventure Wins the Mayor’s Race

Adventure Wins! 1991 ©Fredrik D. Bodin
Three years after her 1988 arrival in Gloucester, Schooner Adventure won the Mayor’s Race for the second time. Race day was crystal clear and very windy, which Adventure, with her 6,500 square feet of sail, took advantage of off the East Gloucester shore. The 122 feet long knockabout schooner was built in Essex (MA) in 1926. She fished until 1953 as the most productive dory fisherman ever.
Now listed as a National Historic Landmark, Adventure is being restored to sail again as a floating classroom. Although she won’t be sailing this year, Adventure will be offering a full schedule of events during Gloucester Schooner Festival: http://schooner-adventure.org/
Note: To help Schooner Adventure, I granted them publicity and promotional rights to this photo and to Adventure Wins! 1988. You can see another photo of Adventure on our distillery Ryan & Wood’s Knockabout Gin label.

What the Heck is a Windlass?

What the Heck is a Windlass?

I never knew what one was until I viewed this video. I always thought it was probably one of the small sails on a Schooner. You learn something new everyday.

From the Youtube Description;

“What’s a windlass? The students from Cape Ann TV’s After-the-Beach Video Club visited the Gloucester Schooner Adventure on Tuesday, July 12, where some of the crew from the Schooner Adventure gave the students a tour of this historic sailing vessel, which is docked at the Marine Railway on Rocky Neck in Gloucester. Watch this short clip to find out about the ship’s newly restored windlass.”

Holy Crap Where Did The Summer Go? It’s Schooner Festival Weekend!

Weekend after weekend there are amazing things to do around here, we all know that.  But this weekend is a biggie- Schooner Festival.  I’m not sure how it slipped off my radar but you can rest assured that will will be covering the shit out it here in these pages.

Marty and Barbara will be aboard the Press Boat, Paulie Walnuts will be getting shots from his favorite perches above the harbor and we will have pictures and video.

You know the drill- if you have some great footage pictures or youtube video you want to upload send me the links and we will Live Blog It like we do so many other events.

GMG will be THE PLACE to follow along with the action if you can’t be there yourself- believe that!

Here’s the press release from the Chamber-

27th Annual
GLOUCESTER SCHOONER FESTIVAL
Labor Day Weekend

The Gloucester Schooner Festival will take place Labor Day weekend, September 2nd through the 4th, 2011.  It’s Gloucester’s major marine event, with participating vessels coming from ports along the Eastern Seaboard.  There will be both large and small vessels—ranging from 19 feet to over 100 feet in length.  You will see new boats and old boats, from newly built to over 100 years old!  Schooners include Gloucester’s Thomas E. Lannon and American Eagle from Rockland, Maine, and many more. Salem’s tallship Friendship will also join in the festivities.  New this year will be the entry of Gloucester’s newest schooner, Harold Burnham’s Ardelle.

The Mayor’s Race is the major event of every Schooner Festival and will take place this year on Sunday, September 4th, with fifteen schooners expected to compete for the Esperanto Cup, the Cameron Cup, and the Ramsey Plate.  Racing starts on Saturday afternoon with seven classes of traditional small craft from 19 to 45 feet long.

An obvious choice for boat lovers, the Schooner Festival also offers plenty of shore side events.  On Saturday, these include Gloucester Maritime Heritage Day, walking tours of Gloucester’s harbor front (hosted by The Schooner Adventure), the lighted boat parade, and a gala fireworks display over Gloucester Harbor. Sunday morning, a grand Parade of Sail passes the Boulevard promenade (Stacy Boulevard, Route 127) as the schooners head out to sea for the Mayor’s Race.  In addition, Festival-goers won’t want to miss Gloucester’s many attractions, including art exhibits, beaches, fishing, museums, dining, historical sites, whale watching, and more!

The Gloucester Schooner Festival is made possible with the generous support of our sponsors: TD Bank, Market Basket, and the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. The Festival is planned and organized by the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee, composed of representatives of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the City of Gloucester, the U.S. Coast Guard, the business community, and private citizens.

A full schedule of events is available online at www.capeannvacations.com/schooner.

Hurricane Irene Claims it’s first Victim

Looks like Hurricane Irene took an extreme turn to the West last night while we we’re all sleeping. Glenn (aka Swimdad) in California,  did’nt heed the warnings and left his boat in the water. Hopefully he can repair it in time For the upcoming Mayor’s Race at the Schooner Fest this year.

Good Luck Glenn!

From Glenn, (aka Swimdad) Former Gloucester Fisherman;

Paul, I  Was on the way to join the GMG Sloop at the schooner fest, but I ran into Mean Irene.  Boats alittle beat up, broke the mast and bow sprit but all hands are fine.

The Essex Dragger Newton

Dragger Newton, Essex, 1930 Anonymous/ © Fredrik D. Bodin
In view of the arrival of our newest Essex-built Schooner Ardelle, I thought it appropriate to show you another arrival in her time. The 116 feet long by 23 feet wide Newton. The Dragger Newton was built in the A. D. Story Shipyard for the Boston Trawling Company. Decorative flags and lines on the bow tell us she’s ready for the September 10th, 1930 launch. The Newton’s sister ship, the Brookline, was launched on December 18th of the same year.

The 27th anniversary Gloucester Schooner Festival will take place Labor Day weekend, September 3-4, 2011. It’s Gloucester’s major marine event, with participating vessels coming from ports along the Eastern Seaboard. The Mayor’s Race is the major event of every Schooner Festival and will take place this year on Sunday, September 4, with over 20 schooners expected to compete for the Esperanto Cup, the Cameron Cup, and the Ramsey Plate. An obvious choice for boat lovers, the Schooner Festival also offers plenty of shore side events. On Saturday, these include Gloucester Maritime Heritage Day, walking tours of Gloucester’s Harborfront (hosted by The Schooner Adventure), the lighted boat parade, and a gala fireworks display over Gloucester Harbor.
