Actresses aboard Tyrone this past spring off Nantucket filming āPeter and Johnā, a Cain and Abel story of sorts. No murder though. Rather, a sail off into the fog for the disenfranchised.
Presently Tyrone is looking for paying guests to act in the upcoming Gloucester Mayorās Cup Race, this time as crew. More info here

Concert by the Sea at Beauport , at the Sleeper-McCann House, in the garden overlooking Gloucester Harbor. Listened to great music by Henry Allen and the New Swingers, watching the sunset and schooners passing by, what a great setting.
Catch a ride to the Gloucester Schooner Festival on the famous schooner BRILLIANT
Al Bezanson submits-
Hi Joey ____
The upcoming Schooner Festival got some notice at Mystic Seaport last month at the WoodenBoat Show. Hereās Capt. Nicholas Alley, schooner BRILLIANT, signing up for a return visit this year.
BRILLIANT, owned and operated by Mystic Seaport, is one of the worldās most beautiful classic boats. Keeping her in tip top condition is no small challenge, and the Seaport depends on income from charters to defray expense. When she visits Gloucester BRILLIANT is forgoing income more easily earned in her home port. Right now she has six berths available for the trip to Gloucester and eight for the return. A trip on BRILLIANT with her congenial and capable crew is a truly great experience. Hereās a link to her website.

I got this photo of BRILLIANT heading back to Mystic after last yearās Schooner Festival. And by the way, Capt. Alley is a previous winner of the Mayorās Race here when he was in command of VIRGINIA.
First sighting of REDBIRD
Hi Joey ___
REDBIRDās long migration from San Francisco via Portsmouth, VA is now complete. She is now a year-round resident of Cape Ann. This beautiful schooner had been kept in the builderās family until Daisy Nell and Captain Stan brought her to town for the first time last Saturday.
Welcome!

Does it Get Any Better?
I can imagine that it may get old listening to me drone on about how unbelievably awesome it is to live here on Cape Ann, but forgive me, because I’m about to do it again.
Last night, onboard the Lannon, I had the pleasure of meeting some people throughout the evening that I had never met before and whom I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with. Ā There was the “always trust a Burnham” friend who insisted that my super moon photos are inaccurate (whom I hope to prove wrong with a photo of the moon near the Annisquam Yacht Club that I’ll attach in a minute)…the “excuse me ma’am” friend who, while he made me feel like I was 90 years old, also made me smile each time he walked by…..a possible new dentist….a really nice gentleman and FOB who used to live in the same home on Pebble Beach that my husband grew up in, etc. Ā I love meeting new people and each of those conversations enhanced an evening that was already pretty phenomenal because of the company of existing friends, a gorgeous evening, and an amazing venue. Ā Ummm….and a rum drink in a coconut. Ā Come on, really! Ā Several people asked me the same question…”What do you write about for GMG?” Ā I found myself at a loss for a decent answer at first, but at the end of the night, I found myself saying, “I cheerlead for how crazy cool Cape Ann is.” Ā Seemed like a good enough answer.
So, for kicks, allow me to recap the last seven days….as if anyone really needs me to highlight how crazy awesome this community is.
In 7 days’ time, we have gotten up close and personal with no fewer than 20 humpback whales (both on the Hurricane from Cape Ann Whale Watch and a smallish center console boat courtesy of some very good friends). We spent a super fun evening with those same friends to celebrate my husband’s birthday, took their boat around the backshore (some of the most beautiful coastline in the world if you ask me), had lots of delicious food and drinks at The Studio, stopped at the Mile Marker, and saw an incredible sunset over Thacher’s Island on the way home. Ā Two days later the kids joined us as we all enjoyed a day that took us out of Rockport Harbor, around the backshore again, into Gloucester Harbor, out to Stellwagen Bank, to the Cape Ann Brewery, down the Annisquam River, for a evening swim at Wingaersheek Beach, a “meet and greet” with Tyler on the Pin Wheel from Wicked Tuna (who came over because he thought we were having boat trouble when he saw the kids waving to him…How nice is that?!), around Halibut Point, and back home into Rockport. Ā My boys have hauled lobster traps with “Uncle Dave”. We have spent time at what the boys call “our beach” right at the end of our road. Ā Meeting friends at Old Garden Beach is always one of our favorite types of summer day and never gets old. Ā To see my boys growing up alongside the children of good friends and playing with them summer after summer…all carefree and sandy is too good for words. Ā We have gone on the Gloucester Harbor Water Shuttle…twice….with two different groups of friends…and the boys were thrilled to help impart a bit of their knowledge of the waterfront. Ā Both of those harbor tours ended with fun meals and laughs on outdoor decks. Ā Does it get any better? Ā We spent an afternoon at Capt. Carlos and another one at the Studio (which will never get old). Ā We had a play date at Maritime Gloucester for probably the thirtieth time… and loved it as if it was the 1st. Ā We’ve ordered smoothies and simply driven around town…because, for some reason, that NEVER gets old for the boys. Ā We’ve watched boats unload and watched fisherman mend gear. Ā We’ve walked through Rockport, hung out with United States Navy, had a few ice creams along the way, bought cupcakes at Rockin’ Cupcakes on Bearskin Neck for Freddy’s b-day, and sat by our new fire pit at night. Ā Oh, and of course, took an incredible evening sail on the Thomas Lannon. Ā For real…quite a week.
I write this not to bore you with a-week-in-the-life-of-the-Schraffts, but rather to demonstrate how a completely normal week can unfold with ease in one of the world’s best communities.
Go get your summer on, peeps. Ā Embrace this place for all it has to offer!
Terrible Time Aboard The Thomas Lannon For The Paul Giacalone / Ryan and Wood / GMG Cigar and Rum Sail
It was just terrible.Ā Hurricane force winds, torrential downpours, lost two or three people overboard, the boat was a filthy mess, the most rude obnoxious people youād ever wanna meet.
A total disaster evidenced by the pictures.
Better pictures on the way from Kim Smith (I was too busy trying to keep people from abandoning ship to take photos)
Look at the sheer misery on these faces-
That James Eves, he doesnāt know how to have a good time does he?
In all seriousness I canāt extend enough thanks to Tom,Kay and Heath Ellis and their crew as well as Bobby and Doug Ryan from Ryan and WoodĀ our local distillery, and Paul Giacalone for providing excellent excellent smokes.
Check out Ryan and Wood for a tour of their facility, it is amazing http://www.ryanandwood.com/
and if you havenāt been on a sail aboard the Lannon (the most beautiful boat in Gloucester Harbor by a mile) you really need to, especially if you have guests in from out of town.Ā It is my number one must do thing I tell people when they ask me what they need to do while in town.Ā Ā You get to see Gloucester Harbor in all itās glory on the most beautiful boat in the harbor with the friendliest crew in the harbor.Ā Total no brainer city easy recommendation for the win.

Thank you Kay Ellis, of the Schooner ‘Thomas E. Lannon’, for suggesting my photo of the Lannon as a mural in the new Bank Gloucester branch office in Essex.

Daisy Nell and Schooner Redbird enroute to new home on Cape Ann
About to pass by the Statue of Liberty. Look out Gloucester, here we come in time for the schooner festival_ 30th year this year! Now Stan and I can be in the race again, after selling our old schooner 8 years ago. I’ll still do the commentary on the boulevard for the parade of schooners, while Stan sails Redbird. But I’ll jump aboard for the race. Our size boat competes for the Betty Ramsey trophy, unlike the large schooners racing for the Mayor’s Cup. Stay tuned for more festival details as the summers rolls on toward Labor Day.

Despite a snagged anchor and a misplaced cannon fuse, the Schooner Thomas E Lannon was first across the finish line in last night’s Schooner Challenge in Gloucester harbor, beating out Ardelle and Fame. See the drama here! As for the song writing and marlinspike seamanship competitions, you be the judge.
