Chris Brayton – Survivor Application Video

Hi, Joey!
My cousin Chris is working very hard to finish his years at Northeastern University…but he’s working just as hard on getting onto Survivor! Could you post this video and small blurb about him onto GMG? THANK YOU in advance!!!!
Jen Holmgren 🙂

Let’s show CBS that Chris has all kinds of support on GMG, and that CBS would be foolish not to put him on!

Organizations: North Shore YMCA, Wellspring, Camp Spindrift, Rockport Boy Scouts (Scoutmaster) Ellis Memorial (an after school program in Roxbury), Squashbusters (a sports oriented after school program for youth) in Boston, Curley K-8 school in Boston, Mission Hill K-8 School in Boston, Memorial Spaulding Elementary School in Newton.. He has also done fund-raisng walks for several years with Pridestride and AFSP (Suicide Prevention.) In total in College thus far he has completed over 2000 hours of community service.
Awards: Youth of the Year award from the YMCA, Child of the Year Award from Wellspring, Eagle Scout rank (highest award in Scouting), "Above and Beyond" awards through Northeastern University for volunteering service (four consecutive years), the Mary Herald-Synan Volunteer Award through Ellis Memorial, and the DAR Good Citizenship award in Middle School and in HS.
As you can see, he has certainly been a huge part of the community. Let’s help him reach a dream by giving back!

Happy Halloween!

Posted on October 31, 2012 by Fr Matthew Green

Another gargoyle shot from Notre Dame in Paris. Possibly my best photo from all this vacation.  Shot at max telephoto without a tripod, thanks to the great low-light capabilities of my new Sony a65 camera!  The only retouching I did was to crop the photo, slightly adjust the contrast on the moon’s face, and remove some color fringing. And add the discreet copyright notice on the top ledge.

No tripod, zero retouching. Have I mentioned how much I love this camera?

Toby Burnham- The Seagull Whisperer

So yesterday this Homie was on the roof of Toby Burnham’s lobster boat The Jupiter II with a striper plug with it’s treble hooks stuck in its leg and abdomen.  it was stuck hobbling around and in obvious pain.

2012-11-03 14.43.50

Toby was inside the cabin oblivious to the condition of the seagull and when he popped his head out the seagull flew off the roof of the boat and onto the roof of our dock here at Captain Joe and Sons.

Toby grabbed a piece of herring and lured the injured seagull back down off the roof of the dock and just as the seagull got within striking range he snatched it by the tail and held it by it’s neck.

2012-11-03 14.44.54

Then grabbing a pair of metal cutters he snipped the treble hooks to remove them from the feet and abdomen without tearing the belly out of the seagull.

Moments later he was on the deck eating a piece of fish scraps Toby fed him.

2012-11-03 14.47.30

A job well done just a week after his 50th birthday.

Nice work Toby!

Sheree DeLorenzo owner of the Seaport Grille, Cruiseport Gloucester in Gloucester, MA cooks her wonderful Bolognase Sauce. A Question For The GMG FOB’s That Tune In To GMG Daily- What Brings You Back?

If you are a GMG FOB from outside of Cape Ann before you go any further please comment below the post where it says “comment” as to what brings you back daily to the blog.

This morning when I got the email from Sem Sutter who is an avid reader of GMG daily and works down in Georgetown I began to wonder what it is about GMG that brings people from outside our geographic location back over and over and has them subscribing to GMG and requesting Bumper stickers and participating in our comment sections.

I am honored that our team here has developed such a huge following all over the country and in often cases all over the world and obviously when you are pulling down 50-60,000 visitors a day in a city that has roughly 30,000 citizens there are folks from other places that are checking this thing we’ve created out.

GMG is obviously a hyperlocal blog which mainly focuses on Cape Ann but when you look at the map of where the hits come from, our readership is global.

The current GMG hits map when I’m writing this at 6:07AM 11/4/12

image

You can access the current GMG hits map here

So I am curious as to what it is about GMG that brings you back if you’re not from here.

Did you visit one time and have fond memories?  Do you dream of moving here?  Is it the photographs?  Is it the humor and camaraderie of the GMG family?  Is it the GMG breaking news which 9 times out of 10 you will find here first?

What is it that compels you to make GMG a daily or hourly visit?

Thank you so much for being part of our GMG community from afar and don’t forget to leave a comment letting us know what it is that brings you back.  If you don’t see the words comment directly below this post click on the title of the post and you should see it then.

I’m anxious to find out what drives you back here, thanks again,

-Joey

The Kids That The GMG Farm Bar and Grille Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Tournament Helped

Aria McElhenny writes-

Hi Joey, Frankie and Ryan,

As the weather starts to get chilly, here at Next Step we all start thinking about one thing: bikini & speedo dodgeball.

Thought you guys and the 2012 tournament participants might like a reminder of how their hard work raising funds at the tourney had an amazing impact on teens with cancer. The video below is from our summer youth conference for teen cancer survivors. These youth spent four days together learning how to manage their disease, laughing, riding a zip line and sharing their stories. The music in the video is an original song written by the youth and recorded at the conference.

Way to go dodge-ballers, you changed a lot of lives this year.

Thanks again from all of us at Next Step,

Aria McElhenny

Newly Engaged FOBs Kimberly Funk & Bradley Scheetz!

Posted on August 28, 2012 by Joey C

Hi Joey-

My boyfriend (now fiance!) Bradley and I really enjoy your blog and we LOVE Gloucester (we definitely have the wheels turning for a relocation from Boston one day). Thought I would share a Gloucester story from this past Sunday..
We often come up on the weekends to hang out and one of the things we (mostly me) like to do is look for sea glass at Pavilion beach. That’s where we were this past Sunday when Bradley called me over to look at something in the sand. Just sitting on a rock was a beautiful shiny sparkly ring. I was a little slow..even thinking aloud that someone must have lost their ring..doh! Anyway it was for ME and we got engaged right then and there! We were super lucky that local, Amy Clayton happened to be on the beach and she snapped some pictures for us! Here our a couple of our favorites ..

Happy Birthday 40th Father Green!

image

Fred Bodin writes-

Father Matthew confessed at my gallery opening tonight that tomorrow he will reach the "Big 40." He looks so much younger, but I guess I’ll believe him. Matthew Green was born in Winchester (MA) Hospital on October 7th, 1972. He told me that his time in Gloucester, which has been less than two years, has been hugely enhanced by his connection with Good Morning Gloucester. GMG quickly put him in touch with the local community and the larger community beyond. We know him through his photographs and his words, and they’re all good. If you’ve met Fr. Matthew at Mug Ups, art openings, or other local events, you know how personable and approachable he is. When I took this photo, I asked him to hold up four fingers to signify age his of four decades. Now I think it should be for the next forty years he stays in Gloucester. This priest has blessed us all with his presence.

Hi, Joey!

I’m in Belarus with the "New Thing" ministry I lead here.

These are photos from a distribution of humanitarian aid to the poor in Minsk.

We distribute about 200 tons a year of donated food and goods here in the former USSR.

Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament Remembered By JD Perry

JD Perry writes-

The morning of August 3, 2012 saw 17 full foursomes of friends, many old and some gained that day, gather at the Cape Ann Golf Course in Essex.  The goal was to memorialize the brothers Patrican, — both of whom passed on far before their time: Aran this past January, and Ryan in 1991 — while raising money for the fund established to benefit Aran’s son Thomas, who was just a year old when he lost his father.  The Patrican boys grew up on Bass Ave, just a few houses from Good Harbor Beach, with their mother Pauline, who, sadly, succumbed to cancer just six months before Ryan died.  From an early age the boys were perceptive, bright, athletic, had a great sense of adventure, and were spirited pranksters.  Aran’s commitment to community was exemplified through the 18 years he served as a decorated and beloved officer with the Gloucester Police Department.

Aran and Ryan’s maternal aunt and uncle, Bernadette and Peter Blackburn of England, have been appreciatively following the various fund-raising events that have benefited their great-nephew, Thomas.  Upon hearing about the golf tournament, they asked if they could donate a trophy for the tournament champions.  This tournament was organized by the same committee that arranged the Aran Patrican Hockey Skate back in June and it was determined, knowing the love of hockey that Aran, Ryan, and Pauline shared, that the trophy choice would be a no brainer.  Anticipating that this would be the first of an annual event, we decided to go big:  a replica of the NHL Stanley Cup.  Bernadette and Peter wholeheartedly agreed and insisted on funding the trophy purchase entirely.  Humbled by their generosity, we asked them to mark the trophy with their dedication.  The inscription reads:

            In memory of

our dear Nephews Aran & Ryan

with enduring love Peter & Bernie Blackburn

The scramble format leveled the playing field so that every foursome had a shot of winning.  Tony Bille, Ken Sholes, Steve Howard, and Bob Marshall won the tournament/day with a score of eleven under par.  In addition to the trophy, which will be inscribed with their names, each winner received a $50 gift certificate to Cape Ann Golf Course and will house the trophy until the next year when the event will continue as the First Annual Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament.  Three foursomes finished in second with scores of ten under par.

All golfers and volunteers retired to the 19th hole to continue the good cheer while dining on a roast beef dinner, enjoying frosty beverages, and to taking chances on the donated raffle prizes and 50-50 drawing.  Many walked away as winners with gifts that included a pair of official MLB Red Sox warm-up jackets, golf hats, and Marshall’s Farm Stand gift certificates.

Thanks for all the money raised ($5000 has been added to the growth fund for Thomas) goes to everyone that played, volunteered their time and effort, donated raffle gifts, or otherwise helped this cause and, of course, to the Stavros family for hosting this event at the Cape Ann Golf Course.

#BOOM! Gloucester wins big grant to fix up Burnham’s Field

John McElhenny writes-

Joey,
Thanks to you and Good Morning Gloucester, GMG readers over the past couple years have followed the good things happening at Burnham’s Field including the clean-ups, the newly painted backboards and the new Burnham’s Field Community Garden.  Here is some of the great GMG coverage of Burnham’s Field

Burnhams Field garden sign team

With all of GMG’s support, it’s no surprise that so many people have rallied to make Burnham’s Field, the largest green space in central Gloucester, a more beautiful, family-friendly place. Here’s some breaking news: The City of Gloucester just won a big grant to continue that process and fix up Burnham’s Field even more. It’s great news for the countless kids and families who use Burnham’s Field every day. Open spaces and playgrounds matter!
Readers can read more about this great news here:

Thanks to you and the GMG community for all you do,

Think About How Great It Must Be To Be Mayor of GTown

After looking over the blog today I’m saying to myself, “Wow look at all the incredible stuff happening in this town and all the great stuff that HAS HAPPENED in this town over the years”

Like the ridiculous art scene, food scene, music scene, natural beauty, funky urban-ness, beaches, schooners, industry, boating, cultural activities, museums, ect, ect ect….

So no matter how tiring it must be to have to listen to all the bullshit rhetoric from the pro-development and anti development obstructionists at the end of the day you’re the Queen or King of one of the coolest places on earth and people voted for you to be that person.  What an honor.

Congrats CK.

GLOUCESTER: A COMMUNITY OF NEIGHBORHOODS From Juni Van Dyke

The eight quilts that you see here were created by Senior Citizens in the art program at The Rose Baker Senior Center. It is our goal to create a celebration quilt for each of Gloucester’s sixteen neighborhoods. This is a huge challenge; but it is also very rewarding, and a great deal of collaborative fun. We invite—indeed we are hoping for…additional public participation. All ages, come and work with us! You will have the happy satisfaction of seeing your creative ideas come to life. Can’t draw a straight line? No problem! Have an idea but not sure how to share it? We will help. You shall succeed, and that’s a promise! We welcome your participation!

Almost without exception, the Senior Citizens involved in this project have had little, if any, formal art training or experience. Their remarkable work bears testimony to the truth that the gift of creativity resides within us all.

Juni Van Dyke

Art Program Director at The Rose Baker Senior Center

*Our thanks to the library for affording us this exhibition space, and to the Gloucester Cultural Council for their generous grant which made it possible for us to purchase the linen used in backing each quilt.
